Gas prices are plummeting in US state after governor’s new order that took effect just days ago

GAS prices are plummeting in one US state just days after its governor’s latest order took effect.

A gallon of regular has dropped by more than 20c in a week and by double that year-on-year.

The south-eastern US has been devastated by Hurricane Helene this month, with almost 100 people killed.

Georgia has been among the worst hit by the destruction, with both candidates in the upcoming election visiting the state in recent days.

More than $45 million in federal funds has already been allocated to aid those affected by the disaster.

But there is some extra relief for Georgians in the form of lower prices at the pump.

This was aided by Gov. Brian Kemp ordering a suspension of gas tax in the state to ease the burden on hurricane-hit households.

The order came into effect last Thursday and has already had a marked effect.

Regular unleaded has dropped to $2.77 a gallon, a decline of 20c since last week.

That’s a whole 41c less than Georgians were paying at the same point in 2023.

Overall, the average 15-gallon tank now works out at $41.55 – $4.85 less than last month.

And it’s set to get even better as the gas tax suspension continues, according to Gov. Kemp.

Officials estimates suggest that the tax break will eventually save drivers 32c per gallon of gas and 36c on a gallon of diesel.

That’s well ahead of the national forecast, with gas prices across the US dropping by just 4c on average since the hurricane.

In Georgia, the cheapest gas can be found in the Catoosa-Dade-Walker Counties at $2.53, followed by Dalton County ($2.56) and Rome ($2.65).

On the flip side, Savannah ($2.83), Valdosta ($2.80) and Hinesville-Fort Stewart ($2.79) were the most expensive.

Montrae Waiters of AAA said: “Even with rumblings of conflict and a storm brewing in the Gulf, prices at the pumps took a dip

“Meanwhile, OPEC+ announced intentions to bolster production come December 1st, hopefully, with this move and crude oil prices trending downward, Georgians will continue to feel financial ease at the pumps.”
