Former Sundowns star arrives at Wydad, deal imminent

Former Mamelodi Sundowns star midfielder Bongani Zungu has arrived in Morocco for a possible deal to join Wyad Athletic Club.

Zungu’s arrival was confirmed by Wydad on social media, saying he will train with the team today (Friday).

According to Wydad, Zungu is strongly wanted by coach Rulani Mokwena, but he can only be signed IF he is fit.

Wydad are struggling with long-term injuries in midfield hence Mokwena recommended the signing of Zungu.

In all honesty, Zungu had always been linked with a possible move to Wydad from the day Mokwena was appointed.

This was after the duo’s surprise departure from Sundowns at the end of last season.

It’s unclear whether or not Zungu had been holding out for Wydad’s as he has been a free agent since leaving Sundowns.

Zungu had been brought back to the club by Mokwena who their relationship goes beyond just football.

Now, they will get to reunite provided Zungu meets Wydad’s demand that he must be fit enough.

Should Zungu join Wydad, he would be the second former Sundowns player to do so after Cassius Mailula.

Mailula is on a season-long loan deal from Major League Soccer (MLS) side Toronto FC in the US.

Zungu, an experienced campaigner, had a taste of European football having played Portugal, France and Scotland.
