A Malaysian national and veterinary expert, Dr Pusa Ramloo, has advised Nigerian students, irrespective of their disciplines, to prioritise their passion when considering future careers.
She gave the advice while delivering a keynote address during the induction ceremony of 30 veterinary doctors of the University of Ilorin into veterinary medicine practice.
The programme was themed “Thriving in Turbulent Times: Strategies for Veterinary Enterprises to Navigate Economic Challenges and Ensure Sustainable Growth”.

According to Dr Ramloo who is the Director, House of Pluto, Lagos, it is not too late for graduates who are passionate about other fields to move on.
“Follow your passion always and do what you are passionate about. If you have graduated as a veterinarian and you are not passionate about it, it’s not too late, please move on.
“One of the students who came to do his internship with us discussed with me that he has a passion for data analysis and I encouraged him. Today, he is working for a top British firm as a data analyst. We have many other instances like that,” she said.
She charged the young veterinarians to embrace technology but with caution.
“Invest only in cost effective technology, leverage on networking opportunities and always be ready to serve.
“Whatever you do and wherever you find yourself, always do the right things which are very difficult to do. But when you have integrity and morals, you will never go down,” she added.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, challenged the new inductees to rise to the challenges of how to tackle emerging global public health issues and diseases being transmitted from animals to human beings.
He said, “You have been certified as a professional veterinarian, what are you going to do differently to impact positively on the Nigerian society. Today, we are dealing with the issue of monkeypox and other animal-to-human diseases, what will be your contribution to the problem?”
On her part, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Mistura Azeez, admonished the new inductees to always discharge their duties with “a deep sense of empathy and passion to the animals.”
In her message, the President of Veterinary Council of Nigeria, AIG Aishatu Baju, advised the new inductees to always put God first in whatever they do.
He encouraged them to ensure the annual renewal of their licences so as not to be found wanting in their practices.
