(MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo.) — It was an exciting day for about forty students at Ute Pass Elementary. They had the chance to visit Flying Pig Farm for a hands-on lesson on where their food comes from.
Students harvested seeds, planted garlic, made and ate their own tortillas, and even helped build a pizza oven out of mud. The chickens, goats, and ducks also got lots of attention from the kids.
Flying Pig Farm has students visiting six days a week. The program is made possible through donations and grant funding.
The United States Department of Agriculture recently granted Flying Pig Farm $96,057. The grant will allow the farm to continue teaching its farm-to-school curriculum.
“We know that when kids are involved with growing food and taught how to prepare it, they are much more likely to enjoy and choose those fruits and vegetables going forward,” said Barak Ben-Amots, the Executive Director of Flying Pig Farm, “This USDA grant strengthens our ability to serve the community, and we are so grateful.”
Ben-Amots hopes students leave the farm with a drive to grow their own food. He says even city kids can benefit from learning farming skills, although they might have to get a little creative.
