Five more horses have been put down following an outbreak of a viral disease at Los Alamitos Race Course that has now led to the deaths of 12 horses since Sept. 24.
The California Horse Racing Board posted the update on the California.Gov website Wednesday, describing the disease as Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA).
The five horses were identified in the post as:
- Devastating
- Chaddock
- Favorite Fire V
- Heart of Gold V
- Superfli
The seven horses euthanized between Sept. 24 and Oct. 3, when the disease was first discovered, were identified earlier this month as:
- Bullet Train V
- Opt In
- El Vencedor V
- Amore For A Reason
- Goodtyme
- Assaultt
- The Marksman V
According to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, EIA is an “infectious and potentially fatal viral disease of horses.” No cure or treatment for the disease exists and it’s typically transmitted from horse to horse via biting insects like horseflies.
