FG seeks IMO technical input in Ports modernization drive

The federal government, through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, is seeking the technical guidance and support of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to further enhance the efficiency of all the nation’s seaports.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, along with the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) are leveraging on the opportunity created at the ongoing World Maritime Day Parallel Event (WMDPE) in Barcelona, Spain, to meet the IMO technical team.

The Minister noted that building a modern and resilient port infrastructure would fast track the country’s economic development, facilitate good paying jobs and enable sustained peace across the country.

He said the Ministry, along with NPA, is working with relevant agencies towards reducing clearance time of imports and cost of handling of non-oil exports, to compliment the economic diversification agenda of the Federal Government.

The move is in line with the federal government’s infrastructure development and modernization agenda and with the technical support of IMO because, saying Nigeria will develop the necessary infrastructure that would support and sustain the increasing cargo volumes at the different Ports.

Since the Minister came onboard, he has reiterated the NPA’s commitment towards improved maritime activities at the nation’s ports corridor through massive renewal and expansion of port infrastructure in the region.
