FDOT halts U.S. Highway 98 construction after traffic delays, plans new strategy

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has reopened all lanes of U.S. Highway 98 in Okaloosa County Tuesday morning, Oct. 22, following widespread traffic disruptions that began Monday with the start of a planned drainage pipe replacement project.

Ian Satter, FDOT District Three Public Information Officer, confirmed the change in plans.

  • “Crews have restored all lanes of traffic this morning,” Satter said. “FDOT engineers are currently developing a new construction plan to complete the pipe replacement project with the least amount of impact to the traveling public.”

The decision to halt construction comes after Monday’s traffic standstill that prompted military leadership at Hurlburt Field to implement flexible work schedules and extend childcare hours to accommodate delays.

According to Satter, FDOT will notify the public once a new construction plan is approved.

The original project, which began Sunday evening, was scheduled to last seven days and reduce traffic to one lane in each direction from Robys Drive to Woodland Park Circle. The work is part of a larger U.S. 98 resurfacing project in Okaloosa County.

FDOT has not yet announced when construction will resume.
