Ronald Thondwana, the baby’s father, explained to Manica Post that Mushati sent him the disturbing video last Saturday but quickly deleted it. When he asked what it was, she laughed and said it was a video of her hitting their baby for not crawling.

After some back-and-forth, Mushati resent the video, and Thondwana forwarded it to his family group out of concern.

Thondwana described his relationship with Mushati as complicated but not hostile.

We are not married because she didn’t want to marry me due to my other wife, but we are still in love. You can even see from our chats,” he said.

He added that their relationship soured after he failed to pay two months of child support.

Mushati, who works as a domestic worker in Zimunya, later posted images of the baby on WhatsApp with the caption, “Resting after a beating for refusing to crawl.” In messages to Thondwana, she justified her actions, saying:

I assaulted her so that she does not become lazy.

Mushati justified her actions:

“I assaulted her so that she does not become lazy. I do not want a disabled child. She is 11-months-old, and still to crawl or stand.”

Thondwana expressed concern for his daughter’s safety and is now seeking to take full custody.

If this is what my child is going through, I would rather take care of her myself. She has always been a sweet person, and we never had serious
issues. It was only recently that she began complaining that
the child was becoming a nuisance and threatened to discipline
her. I honestly thought she was joking.”

Mushati has since pleaded guilty to ill-treatment of a child in court and cited a mental disorder as the reason behind her actions. The case has been adjourned to October 30, with Mushati remanded in custody pending a mental health examination.
