(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind (CSDB) gathered at Acacia Park on Friday, Oct. 18 for an event celebrating National White Cane Day.
National White Cane Day was established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 to recognize the empowerment of people who are blind or have low vision.
CSDB said the white cane is an essential tool for people who are blind, and they want to both celebrate and educate the community about the day. Friday’s event included live performances from the school’s band, yard games, and art made by the students for sale.

“There is a belief that people who are blind cannot do so many things in this world,” said Robin Tueting, a certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist. “And the white cane gives people who are blind the ability to feel the path in front of them as they’re traveling to navigate this world. And it’s kind of the key to doing whatever they want to do in this life.”
The school said Friday’s event exemplified how blind and low-vision students can not only successfully navigate a vision-dependent world with the help of a white cane, but they can also excel at many things, like playing musical instruments using their sense of touch and feel.
