Erik ten Hag has dismissed the latest speculation about his future as Manchester United manager, but admits that 14th place in the Premier League ‘is not good enough’.

United has had its worst start to the season after seven games – winning only twice and scoring five goals – which has increased the pressure on Ten Hag.

But the Dutchman insists much of the noise is coming from outside and United will weather the final storm. “We’re all on one page in this club,” he said.

‘I told this before the break, several journalists probably didn’t believe me because I saw the reports. It is quiet internally in the club.

‘Obviously we are unhappy in the position we are in and we have to turn the corner with a strategy to deal with this corner.

“But at the end of the day, we’re quiet, we’re calm, we stay where we are, we stick to the plan and we’re confident that we’re going to make it a success.”

Ten Hag continued: ‘Sometimes you have to face challenges, sometimes it goes up, sometimes it goes down. I am sure we will make it a success, just like the last two seasons.

‘We are in one direction. Below that I see good patterns, good steps that confirm we are moving in a certain direction, but the ranking doesn’t lie – it’s not good enough.

“Generally the players are performing well and we have to start scoring and that part is the most important part in football if you want to win games.

‘We have to improve that part. We go into the final third, the box, we get into good positions to score, but now the most important part is scoring.”

Ten Hag also hit back at the media regarding the speculation about his job, while reaffirming his belief that things will get better.

‘(I have) had no certainty about my position. There is only noise coming from some of you (the media), who create stories and fairy tales and spread lies.

‘We are sticking to the plan and are convinced that it will be a success.’
