EPSO Traffic stop leads to arrest with multiple charges

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) said that a deputy pulled over a speeding vehicle and found drugs and an illegal firearm in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 14.

On Monday, at around 7:30 a.m. EPSO Patrol deputy Roberts was working a Colorado Department of Transportation High Visibility Traffic Grant near Constitution Avenue and Marksheffel Road. Deputy Roberts saw a vehicle speeding with expired registration and initiated a traffic stop, according to EPSO.

The driver identified as 44-year-old Osvaldo Luque-Camargo, had no insurance and was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver’s license.

The deputy also saw a firearm in the center console and when questioned about the vehicle and its registration Luque-Camargo allegedly gave conflicting stories, which raised further suspicion.

EPSO said the deputy got consent to search the vehicle and found 380 grams of methamphetamine, a firearm with no serial number, drug distribution paraphernalia, multiple debit cards not issued to Luque-Camargo, over 100 gift cards, and ballistic body armor.

Luque-Camargo was arrested and taken to the El Paso County Jail, he is facing charges of:

  • Unlawful Possession for Distribution
  • Special Offender
  • Unlawful Possession of Financial Devices
  • several traffic violations

“Thanks to the vigilance and great cop work on behalf of Deputy Roberts, what started as a traffic stop led to the removal of dangerous drugs and an illegal firearm from our streets. My deputies are committed to keeping El Paso County safe, and this is a prime example of their dedication to protecting our community,” said Sheriff Joseph Roybal.
