Durga Navami is also known as Mahanavami, and it is considered one of the most sacred festivals in Hinduism. The day symbolizes the ninth day of Navratri and holds great importance as the power of Goddess Durga is related to this day and she defeated the demon Mahishasura. In 2024, Mahanavami will be celebrated on October 12, which is a Saturday, being the last day of Navratri.
Durga Puja begins with Shashthi Tithi and ends with the tenth day, which is Vijayadashami. Durga Puja is celebrated very joyfully in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. Goddess Durga is worshipped in her several types during Durga Puja, besides being worshiped as Mahishasuramardini-the form of the Goddess who had killed the demon Mahishasura.
Mahanavami is said to be the third and last day of Durga Puja, of which the goddess Durga is worshiped as Mahishasuramardini on this day. This day is marked with a victory won by the goddess over Mahishasura, thus marking good over evil.
Navaratri is celebrated in honor of the nine powers of Goddess Durga. The festival has religious connotations and is an expression of social and cultural unity. During the nine days of Navratri, devotees undertake fasts, perform special prayers, and seek Goddess Durga to free them from evil and negative energies. Idols of Goddess Durga are installed and worshipped in various ways during this festival.
Maha Snan and Shodashopachar Puja are the rituals that depict the starting of the day of Mahanavami. The second significant ritual performed on this day is Navami Havan. This havan is the most important part of Durga Puja. The primary purpose of this havan is to give thanks to Goddess Durga and to seek her blessings. The second significant ritual performed on this day is the sacrifice that is referred as Durga Balidan. This sacrifice is considered the most auspicious when it occurs during the rising time of Navami Tithi.
Mahanavami is worship related to the victory story of Goddess Durga, defeating the demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura, who was such a powerful demon, defeated the gods and took heaven for himself. Then the gods fused their powers to create Goddess Durga so that she would defeat Mahishasura and restore the gods to their place. Navratri and especially Mahanavami day is celebrated to commemorate this victory.
Navratri in 2024 will start on Thursday, October 3 and end on Mahanavami with Saturday, October 12. Durga Puja will start with Shastipriya Dashami being celebrated on October 8 and go up to the Dugar puja immersion on October 13.
