D49 approves policy to install metal detectors

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Thursday, Oct. 10, District 49’s (D49) Board of Education approved a new policy that would add metal detectors and other security items to be used by D49.

According to D49’s policy, the addition of hand-held wands and metal detectors would help create a safer environment for students and staff by preventing the presence of weapons. The policy received four “yea’s” and one “nay” and the motion was carried forward for action.

“The Board of Education recognizes that effective learning and teaching take place in a safe, secure, and welcoming environment and that safe schools contribute to improved attendance, increased student achievement, and community support,” the policy read.

The addition of metal detectors would be used when D49’s school administration has a reasonable cause to believe weapons or any contraband are in the possession of a staff member, student, or visitor. The detectors would also be used if there has been a pattern of weapons found at the school, or when any threats of violence have occurred at the school or any D49 building.

If a detector is activated while searches are performed, the individual will be subjected to a private search following the policy regarding personal searches. If the individual refuses to submit to a metal-detection screening, D49 stated they will be “barred” from entry to a district property.

D49 said the budget impact is $20,500 for a complete metal detector unit and two hand wands for additional screening.

The Board listed safety as a priority for the district, and how they are committed to providing a safe environment in school. By adding these safety measures, the board believes it will assist the district in providing a safe environment and peace of mind for staff, students, and parents.
