CSP program provides financial help to auto theft victims

(COLORADO) — The Colorado State Patrol has set the first program in the nation meant to help reduce the financial impact of auto theft crimes.

The grant-funded opportunity began last year, and for the second consecutive year, the Colorado State Patrol Victim’s Services Unit has secured grant funding to continue helping vehicle theft victims.

Colorado residents who have been victims of theft may be eligible to receive funding to offset specific costs associated with the crime and get them back on the road.

Some expenses victims may be eligible for are:

  • Alternative transportation such as public transportation, ride-share services, and rental vehicle services.
  • Cleaning and sanitation fees
  • Towing and storage fees
  • Vehicle repair reimbursement
  • Steering wheel locks and hardening devices

Victims can apply for secondary costs from the theft of a car or catalytic converter. Some requirements to qualify include providing proof of invoices or receipts, an image of a Colorado driver’s license, and an image of a valid vehicle registration of the stolen car.

In 2024, Colorado has recovered more than 90% of all stolen vehicles. While the likelihood of auto theft victims seeing their property again is high, CSP said they are often shocked by the unknown or unexpected expenses associated with this crime.

“The Colorado State Patrol wants to help secure financial support for these expenses to return the vehicle to an operable condition and/or minimize the impact an auto theft may have on a person’s life,” wrote CSP.
