Clif Bar fans to get cash payment from $12 million settlement after company was sued over information on food labels

SNACKERS can get a piece of a $12 million settlement if they purchased Clif Bars within the past decade.

Clif Bar was the target of a class action lawsuit over whether its advertising misled consumers into thinking its products were healthy.

The lawsuit filed against Clif Bar & Company argued that marketing the protein bars as “nutrition for sustained energy” distracts from the notable amount of sugar in the bars.

While the bars proudly proclaim they contain no high fructose corn syrup, nearly 40% of the calorie content comes from added sugars, the lawsuit states.

“Clif markets these so-called ‘nutrition’ bars with labeling and packaging claims that convey a health and wellness message with the goal of increasing the price and sales,” the complaint filed 2018 reads.

The class action suit points out that sugar acts as a chronic liver toxin and that consumers should be aware of how the ingredients can affect their health.

Clif denied that their products were unhealthy, and a court never determined who was right, but the company still agreed to pay $12 million for a settlement fund.

Anyone who purchased an Original Clif Bar or Clif Kid ZBar in California or New York between April 2014 and March 2023 is eligible for a payout.

To get your money back, you must submit a claim on the settlement website and include as much relevant information as possible.

Those who don’t have proof of purchase can still get money back if they fill out the form.

If you bought up to 30 bars within the time frame, you can get a $5 payment.

If you purchased between 31 and 60 bars, you can get $10 back.

And those who bought over 61 bars can get a $15 payment without even providing receipts.

Eligible shoppers with proof of purchase can use their receipts to get $15 for their first 60 bars.

Any purchase after that with an included receipt can earn back $0.25 per bar.

Consumers can submit their claims online or by mail.

Claim forms are due by November 25, and anyone who wishes to reject the claim has until October 22 to respond.

A court will make its final decision on the settlement on November 14.

What’s a class-action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or ‘classes,’ a way to band together in court.

These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.

When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.

These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.

MORE SETTLEMENTS

Other companies have agreed to give out massive payments to consumers thanks to class-action lawsuits.

Some Americans can get a one-time pay out of $3,000 thanks to a privacy settlement, and no receipt is needed.

And others can get a piece of a $11.5 million settlement over a furniture company’s disputed false advertising.

Shoppers should take immediate action if they are eligible for payments, as they will miss out on free cash if the deadline passes.
