We tested 3 ‘immune-boosting’ supplements to ward off ‘Freshers’ flu’

The best way to do this is by having enough sleep, a balanced diet, exercising, minimising stress and cutting down on booze and cigarettes.

Today I look at supplements aimed at helping . . .

Mushrooms

Hifas Da Terra Bio Defense pills contain a large dose of vitamin C

THERE are five organic immune-supporting mushrooms in Hifas Da Terra Bio Defense pills – reishi, maitake, shiitake, oyster and brown king oyster.

The fungi are high in beta-glucans – natural indigestible fibres that have been found to help balance gut health and “prime” our immune system to fight off bugs and germs.

These easy-to-swallow pills also contain a large dose of vitamin C, from organic acerola cherries, and vegan vitamin D from real reindeer lichen.

Each Doctor Seaweed Pure seaweed 500mg capsule contains similar levels of iodine to a portion of haddock[/caption]

IODINE is a mineral you can find in seafood, eggs, milk and milk products.

Dietary deficiencies in it have been shown to severely impact mental and physical health and thyroid function.

The thryoid controls the body’s metabolism and many other key functions, including energy, cognitition and immunity. So keeping yours healthy is vital.

Seaweed is the only plant-based source that provides adequate amounts of iodine for optimal function.

It is also rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals so perfect for immunity.

Each Doctor Seaweed Pure seaweed 500mg capsule contains similar levels of iodine to a portion of haddock.

These do have a slight aftertaste so I take with a lot of water.

£15 for a month’s supply. doctorseaweed.com

Vitmain D kit

You can now check your vitamin D levels at home using BetterYou Vitamin D Test Kit[/caption]

IT is recommended that everyone from the age of one takes 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day.

It contributes to the function and strength of your immune system.

You can now check your levels at home using BetterYou Vitamin D Test Kit.

Simply prick your finger and put a drop of blood on to blotting paper which you post to a lab.

The results take about three weeks and you will receive a free personalised supplementation plan based on your levels.

Around one in five of us is low or deficient in vitamin D – including me.

Regular sun exposure is the most natural way to get enough – but even though I run outdoors a lot, this showed my levels were still low.

£34.95, currently with a free vitamin D oral spray. betteryou.com

Britain’s biggest police force rejects woke plans to introduce gender neutral uniforms

BRITAIN’S biggest police force has rejected woke plans to introduce gender neutral uniforms.

The Met launched a review when a legal ruling recognised the rights of non-binary and gender fluid people.

But a consultation of 30,000 officers has found they have refused the possibility of unisex outfits.

Instead, they have decided to stick to male and female gear and their current supplier contract has been extended to 2026.

Met chiefs said the decision was made to prevent officers being caused “discomfort or injury” in gear not “designed for (the correct) body shape or physical characteristics”.

The London force also said it will continue “to provide male and female uniforms and equipment to officers”.

It comes after we told how unisex trousers had left male officers in Gwent with “crushed testicles” while female staff complained of an uncomfortable lack of space “between waist and the crotch”.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance said: “Brits will thank the Met for siding with common sense over wokery.

“Instead of wasting cash on unnecessary unisex uniforms, they can focus their resources on tackling crime.”

Huge sum spent on baby killer Lucy Letby’s legal aid revealed – and they will rise even higher

BABY killer Lucy Letby’s total legal aid bill has climbed to £1.7million and will rise higher.

The evil nurse was allowed to spend £901,817.45 on barristers and £818,497.92 on solicitors, The Legal Aid Agency revealed in new figures released to The Sun.

Ministry of Justice bean counters have warned the bill is set to rise even higher as “legal aid expenditure” for her recent re-trial and Court of Appeal hearing are yet to be added to the total.

Letby, 34, was convicted of seven murders and seven attempted killings in August last year.

Her original ten-month trial cost the Crown Prosecution Service £2.5million.

The monster became Britain’s most prolific child killer and was handed a second whole life tariff after being found guilty of attempting to murder a baby girl following a gruelling retrial in July.

Letby is set to challenge her most recent conviction for murdering seven babies and trying to kill seven more, the Court of Appeal revealed earlier this month.

Court staff confirmed that Letby is bringing a bid to appeal against her conviction for one count of attempted murder in July.

Judges will consider the case at a hearing on October 24, according to court listings.

Letby previously launched an appeal to challenge her guilty verdicts for seven murders and six attempted murders, which was rejected in May.

Tory MP Pauline Latham has previously called the spend on Letby’s defence “staggering” and said reform of the Legal Aid system “should probably be looked at again”.

The Legal Aid Agency, said: “The Legal Aid Agency is not yet in receipt of all of the claims associated with recent trial, which are received and paid in arrears upon conclusion of the case.”

Watch UFC star deliver ‘one of the most brutal knockouts ever’ that left opponent laid spark out on the canvas

FARES ZIAM delivered one of UFC’s most “insane” knockouts ever.

The “Smile Killer” left Matt Frevola out cold – and MMA fans almost as stunned.

The Frenchman produced his ‘Grand Ziam’ finish with a frightening knee

Considering how chilling the finale was, it’s incredible Ziam has never triumphed inside the distance before.

One UFC fan labelled it “one of the most brutal knockouts I’ve ever seen”.

After 13 minutes of their lightweight contest, home favourite Ziam suddenly put his forearm around Frevola’s head in the Paris octagon – and produced a crushing knee to the face.

The American crumpled immediately.

And although Ziam went in to finish the 34-year-old off there was never any doubt it was already over.

The referee darted in to keep him off the New Yorker.

“Frevola was out, holy *** that’s scary,” responded one viewer.

Another posted: “KO of the year contender?”

Ziam went in for the finish but it was already over and he was pulled off

CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERS

Ziam won 10 of his 12 MMA bouts before switching to UFC five years ago.

Since then the 27-year-old has come out on top in five of his seven fights.

That includes a remarkable success back seven months ago, in his last bout before taking on Frevola.

Peruvian fighter Claudio Puelles put him down SEVEN times but Ziam notched a split-decision victory – due to landing more strikes.

He was then into the third and final round against Frevola when he produced his first “finish” – namely winning without needing to go all the way.

Frevola graduated from the University of Tampa with a degree in Criminology.

But he won’t need his academic background for him to agree with one fan’s verdict that Ziam is a “bad man” – at least in fighting parlance for a mean machine.

However, some viewers were unhappy at Ziam still trying to land quick blows after Frevola was clearly spark out.

One fan even suggested: “He should be disqualified for those two punches afterwards. It was clearly a knockout.”

Our Mercy would love to know she’s helping other kids, say parents after setting up charity in her memory

THE parents of little battler Mercy Cuthbertson have spoken of their pride now her legacy will live on with a charity set up in her memory.

Before the six-year-old died in May from a rare and inoperable brain tumour, she captured the hearts of the nation.

Generous Sun on Sunday readers helped smash a £100,000 fundraising target for her medical treatment, care and specialist equipment.

Mum and dad Paul and Lorraine set up Mercy’s Mighty Foundation after she died, and it has now been officially recognised by the Charity Commission.

Lorraine, 44, from North Tyneside, said: “Mercy was very emotionally intelligent. Even when she was being treated at the hospital, she would share her craft materials with the other kids.

“Mercy would have loved the thought she was helping other children and that her face was on stickers and banners. She’d have been in her element.

“We are delighted the foundation has been officially recognised. We are creating a legacy that’s going to help other children like Mercy.”

In the summer of 2023, Mercy’s parents, who are both officers with Northumbria Police noticed she had suddenly stopped “racing” around the family home, suffering dizzy spells and and feeling tired.

Chief Inspector Lorraine and Paul, 52, a constable, took their daughter to the GP.

Mercy was referred for tests, which revealed she had an aggressive diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma tumour. It affects 20 to 30 children in Britain a year.

While undergoing three surgeries, 28 radiotherapy sessions and intense physiotherapy, Mercy remained positive and would still light up the room with her infectious laugh.

But Mercy died in her parents’ arms on May 19.

Grief-stricken Lorraine and Paul vowed to help other young brain tumour patients.

They now run Mercy’s Mighty Foundation with a trustee and lead fundraiser Elizabeth Biggins.

Through fun days, sponsored runs and JustGiving donations, they have raised a further £12,500 since Mercy died.

Among the children who have already benefited is five-year-old Teddy, who was diagnosed with a DIPG brain tumour in April.

The charity sent the little boy a Dream Box filled with Mercy’s favourite crafts, Smyths vouchers, and a teddy bear to reward his courage during radiotherapy.

Esme, nine, who has had surgery after being diagnosed with a brain tumour on June 10, has also received a box.

Lorraine thanked Sun on Sunday readers for their generous donations.

She said: “Every penny donated by readers makes a difference and will go to the foundation.”

For years I’ve noticed reddening on the side of my nose – my GP just brushes it off as sunburn

DR Zoe Williams, our resident specialist and NHS GP, shares her expert advice with our readers.

Here she helps a reader who has noticed redenning on the side of their nose.

Dr Zoe helps a reader who has reddening on the side of their nose
Olivia West

Q) FOR around four years I have noticed reddening on the side of my nose.

My GP says it is sunburn –  yet I use factor 50 sun lotion.

A) Persistent redness on the side of your nose can be frustrating, especially if it is not improving despite using sunscreen.

Sunburn can cause skin redness but it tends to be short-lived. If the skin scars, this can leave it altered longer term.

Given that the reddening has lasted for this long, it might be a different issue.

For example, rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels, and it can be triggered or exacerbated by sun exposure.

Another condition is seborrhoeic dermatitis which is caused by a yeast organism that lives on the skin.

This can be treated quite easily with cream that can be bought from a pharmacist.

I would suggest going back to the GP, maybe asking reception if there is a doctor that has a special interest in dermatology.

Sometimes your GP may take pictures, with your permission, to ask a dermatologist at the hospital for their opinion.

In the meantime keep using SPF 50 all over your face to protect your skin from sun damage.

TIP: WHY not use Stoptober to quit smoking this coming month?

Or use Sober October to reduce drinking, perhaps with a loved one so you can support each other and find new hobbies to fill the time.
