Boom in black-market sale of fake cigarettes could be funding organised crime gangs

A SPIKE in black-market sales of fake cigarettes could be funding organised crime gangs.

New stats revealed 11 out of 12 regions are reporting a boom in the illicit trade across the past year, with Scotland seeing a rise of more than 20 per cent.

Former Scotland Yard detective, Will O’Reilly, revealed undercover operatives had visited 60 retailers in the capital[/caption]

While Northern Ireland and the South East of England had seen rises of 15.9 per cent and 14.5 per cent respectively.

The report also found the UK is ranked third out of 38 countries when it comes to the amount of illegal tobacco products – with one in four smoked said to be contraband.

While London has seen a surge of 109 per cent since 2020, according to the data commissioned by Philip Morris International via KPMG.

Further data surveying 200 London shop owners revealed a third are convinced sales of such products are fuelling dangerous and organised crime.

The poll revealed youth tobacco and vape use, violent crime, and money laundering linked to the illicit trade are higher in London’s poorest communities.

And the cost-of-living crisis is seen as a contributing factor, with half of all shopkeepers citing economic hardship and the demand for cheaper products as drivers of illicit use.

Former Scotland Yard detective, Will O’Reilly, revealed undercover operatives had visited 60 retailers in the capital and more than half were openly selling harmful and unregulated smoking products.

Will O’Reilly said: “This is a pattern I’ve observed across the country, with stores selling dangerous illicit cigarettes and vapes.

“Eliminating the illegal cigarette market alone could strip organised crime of profits equivalent to funding over 115,000 new police officers.”

It also emerged 52 per cent of retailers polled fear higher taxes on legal products might boost the illicit market.

Similarly, 44 per cent are concerned restrictive regulations on legitimate alternatives could inadvertently increase such activity.

Respondents also showed their commitment to supporting anti-illicit product efforts by purchasing only from legitimate sources and reporting illegal activities.

Despite this, 40 per cent doubt illicit use will drop by 2030, England’s smoke-free goal.

Seven in 10 would also like to see stronger law enforcement and three quarters would back harsher penalties for rule breakers.

While 71 per cent want to see improved access to legitimate, affordable smoke-free alternatives like e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products.

Duncan Cunningham, from Philip Morris Limited (PML), added: “The illicit tobacco and vape trade poses a direct and serious threat to public health, preying on deprived communities and driving youth uptake.

“With the UK already among Europe’s largest illicit cigarette markets, we must strike a careful balance: safeguarding people, especially youth, from harmful illicit products, while ensuring adult smokers have access to smoke-free alternatives.

“To truly achieve a smoke-free future, we must protect future generations and support the 6.4 million adult smokers in the UK by maintaining access to regulated alternatives that have already helped millions quit cigarettes.”

Smoking vs. vaping

VAPING has been touted as an effective tool to help people quit smoking.

Though vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking, the habit isn’t completely harmless and comes with its own set of risks.

The NHS only recommends it for adult smokers, to support quitting smoking.

GP and author Dr Philippa Kaye explained to The Sun that the differences between vaping and smoking – and whether one is better than the other – is “complicated”.

“In a nutshell, vaping is better than smoking, but breathing air is better than vaping at all.”

Vaping exposes users to far fewer toxins – and at lower levels – than smoking cigarettes.

Switching to vaping significantly reduces your exposure to toxins that can cause cancer, lung disease, and diseases of the heart and circulation like heart attack and stroke.

These diseases are not caused by nicotine, which is relatively harmless to health. But research has still linked vaping to a higher risk of failure and lung disease.

Health risks of cigarettes

  • Smokers are more likely than nonsmokers to develop heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer
  • Smokers are at greater risk for diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels
  • Smoking can cause lung disease by damaging your airways and the small air sacs
  • Smoking can cause cancer almost anywhere in your body
  • It affects overall health too, such as your mouth, eyes, immune system and fertility

Health risks of vaping

  • They can cause side effects such as throat and mouth irritation, headache, cough and feeling sick
  • They could lead to tooth decay
  • They could damage heart health
  • They could cause lung disease
  • They could slow brain development

I was drowning in £12.5k debt but cleared it in a year – I got PAID to go shopping & flogged ‘mystery boxes’ on Vinted

365 DAYS – that’s all it took for one cash-savvy mum to pay off her monster £12.5k debt, and it was all thanks to very easy but clever side hustles.

Like many money-strapped Brits, Lisa Danielle (@sidehustlesister) was struggling to make ends meet especially as she also had a huge debt worth close to £13,000.

The money-smart woman, who works in internal communications, also revealed the side hustles she wouldn’t recommend bothering with

After watching videos on social media shared by others who made cash from their jobs ‘on the side’ – aka side hustles – the 43-year-old decided to take the leap.

And they were so remarkably quick and easy to latch onto, mum-of-three Lisa managed to clear her sizeable debt racked up through loans, within a year.

From flogging mystery boxes to earning cash in return for family days out as well as trips to the supermarket, she even made enough to treat herself to a trip of a lifetime.

She said: ”It really does add up, so it’s all about consistency.”

The more Lisa, from Manchester looked into side hustles the more she bombarded with videos.

Others claimed they’d raked in a fortune in various ways – from creating random products to writing product reviews.

However, this was an alien world to Lisa who had to clear more than £5.4k in tuition fees, as well as an additional £6.8k for a car loan.

”I’ve always paid my student loan on time but with the interest it was still hanging around,” said Lisa whose ‘day’ job is in internal communication.

”It just felt like it was about time that I got rid of it – it’s more than half of my life ago that I graduated from university,” she explained.

”I just really wanted to be debt-free, it just felt like it was the right time.”

The start of the debt-free journey

It was in last year that Lisa landed on money-making accounts on TikTok – but none seemed feasible.

”One of them was a lady who was trying to make £100,000 in a year and the other one was a chap who was trying to turn £20 into £200,000,” said Lisa.

”I thought it was amazing – but it just seemed so far out of reach for me.

”So that’s when I focused on clearing my £12.5k worth of debt instead.”

After sharing her first video online, Lisa – who now boasts close to 60k followers on TikTok and goes by the name the Side Hustle Sister – received heaps of suggestions about how to make money.

Make money from pre-loved gear

Lisa became hooked and to kickstart the debt-clearing challenge she turned to sites like Vinted, Facebook Marketplace, as well as eBay where she sold several pre-loved items she’d found at home.

Next, she bought mystery boxes online and sold things she didn’t want.

Some of the best-known survey sites to try as a side hustle

  • i-Say
  • Swagbucks
  • Crowdology
  • Curious Cat
  • Google Opinion Rewards
  • PopulusLive

Side hustle that ANYONE can do

Then she turned to survey sites, including Attapol and Survey Pop, where she was paid to share her opinion which brought in between £100 and £200 extra cash a month.

”I still do surveys. They’re not for everyone – you’re definitely not going to be a millionaire by doing them,” said Lisa who completed them once her children were asleep.

”But it’s something that absolutely anyone can do. I’d put the TV on and then I’d just sit and complete a few,” she added.

”I’ve had so many messages from people saying how they didn’t have dinner money for the kids so they filled in a few surveys.”

Secret shopper

The money-smart mum then moved into secret shopping – a ”fun” way to rake in some extra cash.

It involves going into a shop and taking a photo of a particular aisle or fridge.

Lisa said: “I get asked to comment on specifics like stock levels or if I think something is missing,

“The options are practically endless, especially as there’s so many services around.”

Lisa earned between £3 to £20 from each store visit and also did the same at local leisure centres and pubs – where she also got to enjoy a completely free meal while she was there.

”I’ve also taken the whole family bowling on the secret shop,” she recalls.

“I was once given a budget of £60 to go bowling, play crazy golf and get something to eat in exchange for my opinions.”

Do I need to pay tax on my side hustle income?

MANY people feeling strapped for cash are boosting their bank balance with a side hustle.

The good news is, there are plenty of simple ways to earn some additional income – but you need to know the rules.

When you’re employed the company you work for takes the tax from your earnings and pays HMRC so you don’t have to.

But anyone earning extra cash, for example from selling things online or dog walking, may have to do it themselves.

Stephen Moor, head of employment at law firm Ashfords, said: “Caution should be taken if you’re earning an additional income, as this is likely to be taxable.

“The side hustle could be treated as taxable trading income, which can include providing services or selling products.”

You can make a gross income of up to £1,000 a year tax-free via the trading allowance, but over this and you’ll usually need to pay tax.

Stephen added: “You need to register for a self-assessment at HMRC to ensure you are paying the correct amount of tax.

“The applicable tax bands and the amount of tax you need to pay will depend on your income.”

If you fail to file a tax return you could end up with a surprise bill from HMRC later on asking you to pay the tax you owe – plus extra fees on top.

Go digital

As well as raking in cash via TikTok Shop and getting paid for her content on the huge platform, Lisa also boosts her bank balance selling digital products such as music, e-books, and online courses.

”I’ve just launched a masterclass where I’ve got 50 students and I’m teaching them how to create digital products – and the success has been absolutely fantastic,” she revealed.

”I’ve got people who work in HR, I’ve got people who want to get out of teaching, I’ve got people with children with additional needs.

”The spectrum of those involved is absolutely fantastic.”

What proved to be a total waste of time

Although several side hustles proved to be lucrative, some others didn’t go to plan including Printing on Demand (POD)

It involves designing products, like a travel guide or a meal prep plan, and a POD partner prints and ships to customers on the seller’s behalf but it’s competitive.

Lisa said: “It’s easy for anyone to get started, and you don’t have to invest a lot of money into building your business – however, it’s worth remembering it’s not a get-rich-quick scheme.”

Lisa, who runs The Side Hustle Sisterhood page on Facebook and treated herself to a trip to New York exactly a year after clearing her debts added: “My most important tip when it comes to side hustles is consider what you do and what you enjoy – and don’t be disheartened when a survey pays you only a few pennies.

”It really does add up, so it’s all about consistency.”

Usyk, 37, meanwhile faces Fury, 36, for the second time on December 21 following his undisputed title victory in May.

But to proceed with the Riyadh rematch he was forced to vacate the IBF belt which Dubois inherited after being elevated from interim champ.

Reacting to the updated list, Fury posted: “Back to number1 on dec21 been repping 22 years and counting.”

Joseph Parker, 32, is third in the Ring rankings following a run of five wins, including one against Deontay Wilder, 38.

Half my face melted off as I celebrated date night with my hubby – it left me feeling like a monster

A WOMAN has revealed how her husband saved her life after half of her face melted off in a freak accident fire.

Lex Milana, 33, from San Jose, California, was due to celebrate her four-year wedding anniversary last summer when she was prescribed Valium by a doctor for anxiety and sleep.

Her husband Joseph discovered her and performed CPR, but Lex was left with third degree burns[/caption]

While Lex was under the effects of valium, she unknowingly got a blow-torch from her kitchen and tried to light a marshmallow in the bathroom.

Lex’s horrified husband found her unconscious, face first, in a flames, before saving her life.

Lex was put into an induced coma and by some miracle, survived. Now, she’s speaking exclusively to Fabulous to raise awareness for burn survivors.

Lex says: “That day I nearly died, and although I was left feeling like a monster for a while, I’m starting to find my beauty again.

“To any other burn survivors out there, don’t get hung up on how unfair your situation is.

“The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can love yourself again.”

Last year, in July 2023, Lex was a cybersecurity analyst on a 6-figure salary, working long hours.

At home, she lived with her husband, Joseph Milana, 53, a motorbike rider, who’s 20 years her senior, and their Shih Tzu dog, Andy.

Lex says: “Joseph and mine’s passion in life was riding motorbikes together. We made an incredible team.

“We’d been married for nearly four years and had our anniversary coming up.

“Rather than planning an expensive dinner, Joseph and I were saving money to renew our vows instead.

“But as it was approaching, work was getting more stressful. I loved the career I’d built for myself but the hours were gruelling.

“But my anxiety and stress from work was making me take it out on Joseph in the evenings.

“I went to the doctor and he prescribed me Valium, which I’d never had before.”

That night, whilst Lex got into bed, her husband was out running errands. She gulped the tablet down, and was soon out like a light.

Lex says: “When I next opened my eyes, I was in a hospital room. My arm was in a sling, and my body was bandaged all over. I had no idea how I got there.

“Then a nurse appeared and told me I’d been in a fire. I was terrified.

“Joseph was there that night, giving me a kiss. But I couldn’t speak or hug him. It took days for me to come around.

“When I finally did, doctors told me I’d been in a coma for nearly two weeks. I couldn’t believe it.

“The last thing I remembered was going to sleep from the tablet.”

Joseph explained to Lex that he’d come home that night to the bathroom door being locked.

He kept banging on the door after Lex didn’t respond, before busting the door open.

Lex says: “Joseph saw me laying face first in bunch of linens that had caught fire.

How to treat burns and when to call 999

Burns are damage to the skin usually caused by heat.

They can be very painful and may cause:

  • Red or peeling skin
  • Blisters
  • Swelling
  • White or charred skin

The amount of pain you feel is not always related to how serious the burn is.

Even a very serious burn may be relatively painless.

Treating burns and scalds

To treat a burn, follow the first aid advice below:

  • Immediately get the person away from the heat source
  • Remove any clothing or jewellery
  • Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running water for 20 to 30 minutes
  • Make sure the person keeps warm
  • After cooling the burn, cover the burn by placing a layer of cling film over it
  • Use painkillers
  • Raise the affected area if possible
  • If it’s an acid or chemical burn, dial 999

When to get medical attention

Depending on how serious a burn is, it may be possible to treat it at home.

For minor burns, keep the burn clean and do not burst any blisters that form.

More serious burns require professional medical attention.

You should go to a hospital A&E department for:

  • All chemical and electrical burns
  • Large or deep burns – any burn bigger than the injured person’s hand
  • Burns that cause white or charred skin – any size
  • Burns on the face, neck, hands, feet, any joints or genitals

If someone has breathed in smoke or fumes, they should also get medical attention.

“He pulled me out, and saw half of my face melted off, as well as my arms and parts of my body.

“I had no pulse and wasn’t responding. He lifted me up, and did CPR on me until the ambulance arrived.

“He thought I was going to die and saved my life. Hearing it all I felt numb. I was in so much shock.”

Lex learned she had third degree burns to her face, scalp, left arm and neck.

She’d been put into an induced coma before having multiple skin grafts and woke two weeks later.

Lex says: “For weeks I had a tube feeding me, and was hooked to a breathing machine. When it was taken out, I barely had a voice.

“I had no memory at all. I knew I took the Valium but couldn’t remember anything after that.

“Joseph told me I’d been ‘out of it’ and I’d apparently gotten a blow-torch from the kitchen, and tried to light a marshmallow in the bathroom.

“Some clothes on the floor set fire and I face planted right into the flames. I was horrified.

“I felt so angry that a doctor had let me take such strong medication. But I was extremely thankful Joseph and Andy weren’t hurt in the fire.

“One moment, we were supposed to be celebrating our wedding anniversary. The next I was fighting for my life.”

Looking in the mirror I felt hideous and ugly. I looked like a monster

Lex Milana

Soon Lex started slowly walking around more each day, learning to use her legs again.

At first she refused to look under her face bandages or in a mirror. But a month later, she finally saw her reflection.

Lex says: “My face was melted, burnt, bloody and raw. My eyes were nearly sewn shut.

“I was bald, with my scalp was full of scabs and blood. It was like something out of a horror film.

“For the first time since I’d woken from the coma, I burst into tears.

“But I kept telling myself I was lucky to be alive every day, and that it could’ve gone a lot worse. I was determined to get better.”

In September 2023, after three months in hospital, Lex was discharged and sent back home.

But for the next six months Lex was depressed and became a recluse.

She says: “I lost my cybersecurity job and was suddenly disabled. I lost everything I’d worked so hard for.

“Not only that but looking in the mirror I felt hideous and ugly. I looked like a monster.

“I’d been told my entire life I was very beautiful, yet I’d always been so humble and never let it get to my head.

“Looking back, I realised how much more confident I should’ve been. I would’ve killed to go back to my old face again.

“I didn’t see friends or family and the only person I let see me was Joseph. He was my rock, caring for me day and night.”

In 2024, Lex began to finally leave the house, but she struggled with strangers staring at her.

She says: “I knew I made people uncomfortable. Once, a child was with her mum in the shops and asked her ‘Mummy, what’s wrong with her face?’

“I knew she was just an innocent child, but it wasn’t nice to hear.

“In time, I got used to the stares and my acceptance of my scars slowly grew.

“Now, it has been a year since the fire, and I’ve had a several reconstructive surgeries.

“My eyes have healed tremendously and my scars are being smoothed out.

“I’ve even started wearing blonde and brunette wigs that make me feel beautiful.

“I’ve got more surgeries to go still, it’s a long journey ahead and I take it day by day, but I’m tremendously proud of myself.

“To other burns survivors, cherish the everyday moments that make you feel good and know it does always get better.

“I’ll forever be grateful for my hero husband. We’re planning to extend our family, and might start IVF in future.”

World’s oldest bottle of wine is found with gold and gruesome remains of first century man hidden inside

ARCHAEOLOGISTS found the world’s oldest bottle of wine was filled with the ghastly remains of a first century man and his gold.

The 2,000-year-old glass urn was found in a roman tomb in the Carmona of city in Spain‘s Andalusia region.

The funeral urn with the 2,000-year-old reddish wine inside also had valuable artefacts like an ancient gold ring inside it[/caption]

It was initially found by experts five years ago and earlier this year they confirmed the liquid inside the container was wine.

The man’s cremated remains were found along with the vintage wine which also contained a gold ring, presumed to be his, with the image of the Roman god Janus emblazoned on it.

The urn – named Olla Ossuaria was full to the brim with around five litres of the preserved reddish liquid.

The wine urn also contained three amber jewels, a bottle of patchouli-scented perfume and some silk fabric.

A local homeowner who was doing renovation work came across the wine by chance back in 2019 and told the local archaeology board.

Chemist Ruiz Arrebola from University of Cordoba told Discover Magazine: “A key factor in the discovery was that the tomb had not been looted or altered previously.

“This means it remained sealed for nearly 2,000 years.”

Researchers said in a journal: “The liquid could not have reached the inside of the urn through flooding or leakage in the burial chamber, nor through condensation.

“This is especially likely as the inside of the urn in the adjacent niche, L-7, was under identical environmental conditions but completely dry.”

The team, at the University of Cordoba were not surprised that the old remains they uncovered were a man’s as the Romans didn’t let women drink wine.

Another urn in the tomb contained a woman’s remains without any traces of wine, confirming this theory.

It’s thought that adding artefacts like gold into tombs was a typical Roman funeral ritual done so the dead could use them in the afterlife.

Testing showed that the vintage wine dated back to the fourth century, making it the world’s oldest known wine.

Local archaeologist Juan Manuel Román said: “At first we were very surprised that liquid was preserved in one of the urns.”

His team found a total of eight different niches in the tomb and six had urns containing the remains of three men and three women.

They suspect the tomb site was a family mausoleum belonging to Carmo locals at the time, reports Decanter.

The sealed burial chamber had been untouched for 2,000 years and remained largely intact.
