Thousands to get free cash or vouchers from £421m cost of living scheme to help with bills – how to apply

THOUSANDS of households across the UK will be able to claim free cash or vouchers to help tackle the soaring cost of living this winter.

From October 1, households will be able to get fresh help from a new pot of government funding under the Household Support Scheme.

The government has released £421 million which will be distributed between councils and then dished out to vulnerable residents over the colder season.

The pot of cash will be available from October this year until March next year.

This comes as the current scheme closes today, September 30, after the latest round of £421 million was used to help struggling households across the country.

The portion of funding each council gets is based on the size of the population, catchment area, and need.

This time Birmingham will receive the greatest share for instance, worth £12.8million.

Receiving the second largest share will be Kent, with £11million, and Lancashire will get £9.7million.

Not every council will receive as much funding as this.

The Isle of Scilly will receive the least amount of cash, worth £11,130.

The City of London will also be allocated £63,080, and Rutland £157,371.

Councils which have higher numbers of vulnerable households will get more cash based on demand.

Tower Hamlets, for example, is the most deprived area in London, and will get £3million.

How the cash gets distributed will be decided by each council, so what you can get will vary depending where you live.

Around £79million is estimated to be provided to the devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for them to decide how best to support their citizens.

What is the Household Support Fund?

The Household Support Fund was introduced in October 2021 by The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to support households most in need.

The funding is distributed between councils, and they are then responsible for dishing out the cash on an application basis.

For example, Birmingham City Council have announced they will hand out free £200 cost of living payments to help its residents cope this winter, as one of its approaches to the fresh fund.

How do I apply?

In order to be eligible for help, you usually have to be in receipt of a council tax reduction or show proof of being in financial difficulty.

Each council has a different application process – so you’ll have to ask your local authority or find out via your council’s website.

Not all councils have decided how they will distribute the cash yet, so you may have to wait to get all the information.

To find out how to contact your local authority, use the gov.uk authority tool checker.

In the last round of funding, some residents received their share automatically, while others had to apply.

For example, Haringey London Council is issuing automatic payments to eligible residents, as well as a support fund which can be applied to.

It is also issuing payments to schools, which means they can distribute free school vouchers.

In previous years, other authorities have offered cost of living vouchers – such as Coventry City Council.

This has included a Community Supermarket scheme, where all Coventry residents could pay £5 weekly and receive a basket of food worth up to £25.

Residents of Effingham, near Guildford, have been able to claim up to £300 free cash to help with the cost of living crisis.

Surrey council previously poured £300,000 into food banks, where photo ID and proof of address is required, but no referral needed.

While some schemes, such as the Surrey Crisis Fund, which can offer up to £100 to those immediately in need, are reserved for those who also rely on other means-tested benefits.

What else can we expect from the new government?

The Household Support Fund was introduced by the Conservative government in 2021.

This year, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liz Kendall MP, said:

“We have invested an extra half a billion pounds in the Household Support Fund to give struggling families and the poorest pensioners the help they need this winter.

“As local authorities across England deliver this lifeline support to help households with the costs of feeding children and heating homes, we are continuing our work to fix the foundations of our country, grow the economy and deliver opportunities for people to get work and get on in work, so everyone feels better off.”

The Labour government is set to announce a new scheme which they have named The Child Poverty Taskforce.

The information for this will not be published until Spring 2025, however the government have promised to regularly engage with people, communities, and organisations to help shape the strategy.

Household Support Fund explained

Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains what you need to know about the Household Support Fund.

If you’re battling to afford energy and water bills, food or other essential items and services, the Household Support Fund can act as a vital lifeline.

The financial support is a little-known way for struggling families to get extra help with the cost of living.

Every council in England has been given a share of £421million cash by the government to distribute to local low income households.

Each local authority chooses how to pass on the support. Some offer vouchers whereas others give direct cash payments.

In many instances, the value of support is worth hundreds of pounds to individual families.

Just as the support varies between councils, so does the criteria for qualifying.

Many councils offer the help to households on selected benefits or they may base help on the level of household income.

The key is to get in touch with your local authority to see exactly what support is on offer.

And don’t delay, the scheme has been extended until April 2025 but your council may dish out their share of the Household Support Fund before this date.

Once the cash is gone, you may find they cannot provide any extra help so it’s crucial you apply as soon as possible.

What other help can I get?

Many energy companies are offering help to those struggling to pay their bills this winter – especially pensioners, as their Winter Fuel Payments are set to be slashed.

This comes as Rachel Reeves announced a £22bn black hole in public spending, making a controversial cut to winter allowances for pensioners not receiving universal credit or any other means-tested benefit.

Follwing the announcement, Octopus Energy has introduced a new scheme, offering pensioners discretionary credit of between £50 and £200.

As well as this, Scottish Power’s Hardship Fund has handed out more than £60 million to all struggling customers.

Help is available if you receive from a long list of benefit schemes, including Income Related Employment and Support Allowance or Income Based Jobseeker’s allowance.

You may also be eligible if you are facing circumstances impacting your earnings, such as illness.

Another company offering help is Utilita – which offers grants to customers to help clear or minimise energy debt.

The scheme operates through Utilita Giving, which is the company’s charity partner.

Utilita Giving also partners with other charities such as IncomeMax, which helps customers make sure they are claiming what they are entitled to, and Let’s Talk, which provides replacement white goods.

Meanwhile, Utility warehouse offers payments of up to £140 to customers about to go in debt, or are currently indebted.

The team has helped 6,000 customers increase their combined disposable income in the last year by £9 million.

To find out if you are eligible for any of these schemes, visit their websites and review the conditions of applying.

Via the website you will find information on how to apply – saving you huge amounts of cash this winter in just a few steps.

Dan Walker fuels Strictly fix row as he slams Nadiya and Tom’s exit as ‘messed up’

FORMER Strictly star Dan Walker has suggested that the BBC show is fixed, after his ex-professional partner, Nadiya Bychokova and her celebrity, Olympic gold medallist, Tom Dean were the first to be voted off.

The swimming ace found himself in the dance-off with singer Toyah Wilcox, but after the panel was initially divided, head judge Shirley Ballas chose to save Toyah in last night’s elimination.

Dan was partnered with Nadiya in 2021 finishing in fifth place[/caption]

But now Channel 5 news anchor Dan, who competed on the show in 2021, has branded the decision, “messed up.”

In a candid post he said: “What just happened on Strictly feels a bit messed up,”

He said: “Tom Dean’s departure will go down as one of THE early shocks. Lovely bloke who really could have become a great dancer. He looked like he was loving every second of it and Nadiya Bychokova looked like she loved teaching him.”

The news man was obviously disappointed on behalf of his former partner with whom he has remained friends since he appeared on the show, finishing in 5th place.

He continued:  “I’m not an expert – and I’m happy for someone to explain – but how he lost that dance off is completely beyond my comprehension,” he continued. “Genuinely thought they could have gone a long way.”

And it seems that many people share his views.

One said “Gutted for Tom and Nadiya. I really think Tom would’ve improved. Didn’t deserve to go out first.”

Another said: Terrible decision, there was no jive in that ‘jive’, Tom deserved better!!

Meanwhile another said: “I’m with you Dan, awful decisions from the judges and you could even see that Toyah thought she was going, her dancing wasn’t good. It’s this sort of thing that really gets to the viewers.’

And another added: “I agree with you. I do dance. A lot more content in Tom’s routine. Sure he had some timing issues and Toyah did put a lot into the performance aspect, but IMO he was much closer to learning and performing the designated dance style, which surely is the main point of the show.’

After the difficult dance off, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse saved Toyah and Neil, while Anton Du Beke voted in favour of Tom and Nadiya.

But ultimately, the decision was left in the hands of head judge Shirley, who opted to save Toyah and Neil.

Following the episode, which was pre-recorded on Saturday, a downcast Nadiya took to Instagram to share an emotional post, cryptically alluding to suggestions that the result was a fix.

She said: “ “I really appreciate all the messages but I’m not ready to talk about what happened tonight just yet.”

Reflecting on his own experience, Tom, who looked visibly disappointed, said afterwards: “I’ve had the best time the last few weeks and getting to work with Nadiya has been incredible.

I wish I could have gone further and done more dances. I’ve had the most fun and I wish we could keep going longer and longer. We’ll still go out for loads of brunches I’m sure.”

Arsenal boost as Ousmane Dembele AXED by PSG after blazing row with boss Luis Enrique ahead of Champions League clash

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN winger Ousmane Dembele has been axed by Luis Enrique ahead of Tuesday’s huge Champions League clash with Arsenal.

Dembele has widely been considered one of PSG‘s best players so far this season.

He allegedly had a row with Luis Enrique on Friday[/caption]

In six Ligue 1 appearances, the 27-year-old has scored four goals and provided four assists.

But despite his stellar form, he will not feature against Arsenal.

Dembele has been dropped from the PSG squad entirely ahead of the huge match.

Instead, Vitinha has been called up for the trip to London.

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Dembele had a blazing row with manager Enrique following PSG’s 3-1 win over Rennes on Friday.

Enrique criticised the winger for some of the decisions he made on the pitch during the match.

It led to a heated discussion which left the Spaniard furious.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was asked about the development during his pre-match press conference on Monday morning.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

He responded: “We just got the news. We don’t know if it is true or not.

“But we prepare like we always do, but they have many other options.”

On the match itself, he added: “Everybody is looking forward to it. We missed it for a number of years, and last year was the first one after so many years that we had the experience to do it.

“The group stage is a bit different this season and the opposition we are going to face tomorrow is probably at the highest level that you can face in European football.

“But honestly, it’s a good opportunity for us to see how we deal with these nights, how prepared we are and how we can impose ourselves in this kind of context.”

Slovan Bratislava vs Man City preview

On paper, it looks as though this could be a cricket score as Premier League champions Manchester City travel to face Slovan Bratislava.

Slovan Bratislava started life in the Champions League with a chastening 5-1 defeat to Celtic in their opener, conceding a whopping 17 efforts on goal and an xG of 3.56.

They have since recovered to win three matches on the bounce in their domestic league and scoring 12 goals in the process, but it doesn’t bode well that their entire squad is valued at roughly half of City’s record signing.

Although now is perhaps one of the better times to be welcoming Pep Guardiola’s side, who’ve won one of their last four and are missing the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri.

But the Cityzens should still have more than enough to register a comprehensive win on Tuesday, especially with talisman Erling Haaland spearheading the attack.

Manchester City are unbeaten in each of their last 11 Champions League away matches, while Bratislava’s last eight clashes in all competitions have yielded a colossal 40 goals at an average of five per match.

Slovan Bratislava vs Man City preview betting tips and predictions

Goals

Given Slovan Bratislava were unable to prevent Celtic from knocking five past them in their Champions League opener, it looks highly unlikely that they’ll limit Manchester City to one or two this week.

The Cityzens haven’t been at their brilliant best in attack, but if things click then they should be more than capable of netting a handful. So we’re backing the visitors to score Over 4.5 Goals at 2/1.

Ha-Ha Land

If Manchester City are going to score a bunch, then you best believe striker Erling Haaland will net the majority of them.

The Norwegian, 24, has scored 10 goals in eight appearances this season – including two hat-tricks and a brace. He’ll have his sights set on winning the Champions League Golden Boot again and this looks the ideal opportunity to get a flurry of goals on the board.

Coronation Street fans fume as John Thomson’s return officially confirmed and hit out at ‘abysmal’ Gail Platt storyline

CORONATION Street fans have slammed Gail Platt’s exit storyline, branding it ‘abysmal’.

Viewers know that Helen Worth, 73, will be leaving her iconic role as Gail after five decades.

Earlier this year, Helen Worth announced her departure from the soap after five decades playing Gail
Rex

Initially, it was reported Sean Wilson would reprise his role as Martin Platt, Gail’s ex-husband, for her final scenes.

However, this was later axed – with Cold Feet actor John Thomson returning as children’s entertainer Jesse Chadwick instead.

John is now back filming as Jesse while the storyline starts to take shape.

It comes as several have been left unimpressed with how Gail’s exit is being handled.

Taking to X, one wrote: “Utterly diabolical exit for Gail and of course, abysmal show!!!”

Another penned: “I really hate how #Corrie have written Gail’s exit.

“She would never leave to run off into the sunset with a man.

“Especially a man as forgettable as What’s-his-face. Truly abysmal.

“Helen Worth is lucky to see the back of this show. It will fall without her.”

While a third added: “Poor Gail, shameful excuse of a pitiful exit after 50 years of service she shouldve had one last big years worth of [storylines] leading to her exit with references and returns of important people from her past!!

“Then gave her the happy ending with her final husband as they move #Corrie.”

Actor and comedian John, 55, previously appeared as Jesse in the ITV soap from 2008 to 2010.

Although, in the character’s first stint, he was a love interest for Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver).

Helen previously confirmed she had signed her final contract and would leave the soap at the end of 2024.

Helen Worth quits Corrie - My View

By Carl Greenwood, Soaps Editor

Actress Helen made her first appearance on the cobbles in 1973 as Gail Potter – and has lived most of her life on them and what a life it’s been.

Beloved by millions through the last half a century, Helen created one of the most iconic characters on British television.

Behind only Ken Barlow co-star Bill Roache, Helen has appeared in more episodes of a television series than anyone else.

She’s had more weddings – and surnames – than almost anyone else and buried multiple husbands – all but one ended up dead.

Three kids, four grandkids and a serial killer husband (and brother) – Gail has been at the forefront of Corrie for decades.

She’s been imprisoned, framed for murder, almost murdered multiple times, she’s survived serial killers, her own children and a concerning addiction to olives.

Not to mention countless street brawls with frenemy Eileen Grimshaw.

But through it all she’s remained a Corrie icon and her exit will leave a colossal hole on the cobbles – much bigger than the sinkhole that opened up in her back garden.

New Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks has her work cut out to give Helen and Gail the epic goodbye she deserves.

The actress said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.

“The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”

At the time, bosses teased that Gail will “bid farewell to Weatherfield in a major storyline for the Platt family”.

Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and is available to watch on ITVX.
