Real reason Sir Steve Redgrave signed up for Dancing On Ice as Olympian goes into training for 2025 series

SIR Steve Redgrave is swapping oars for skates for the next series of Dancing On Ice – and there is a very good reason for it.

The Olympic rower, 62, will be gliding into the new year after signing up for the 2025 series of the ITV1 show.

Sir Steve revealed the news on daytime show This Morning and told hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard that he will be the the “oldest and heaviest”.

The five-times gold medalist even joked that his skating partner will have to be “someone big”, as he currently tips the scales at 18st 8lbs (120kg).

But the gruelling training regime for DOI could see Steve slimming down, which is likely to be the reason he signed up for it.

In an interview last year, Steve admitted that he has a borderline testosterone deficiency, which has led to unexplained weight gain.

The professional rower, who has also been Type 2 Diabetic for almost three decades, retired from rowing in 2000 and is keen to keep fit and healthy.

Speaking to The Herald, Sir Steve said: “I generally try to keep fit – nothing compared to when I was an athlete, but I try to eat healthily and look after myself.

“My eldest daughter Natalie, who’s a doctor, is pregnant, so I’m going to be a grandfather in July, and I want to be healthy and fit for the grandchildren that are going to start coming along from now.

“It’s my first grandchild, and I’m looking forward to being a grandfather. But it makes me feel old!”

Sir Steve said he played golf once a week, visited the gym and enjoyed static biking.

The retired athlete was revealed as the latest DOI 2025 contestant during Monday’s episode of This Morning.

Throughout the show, hosts Cat and Ben teased a series of clues before revealing his identity.

Sir Steve then told them: “I must be closest to being one of the oldest, if not the oldest, on the show, but I’m certainly the heaviest that’s ever been on the show.

“120 kilos, so that’s around 20 stone, so I’m not light. And I’ve been asking (for) somebody big that can lift me.”

When asked why he was giving it a go, Sir Steve laughed: “I don’t know!

“But earlier this year on the series it was Torvill and Dean‘s 40th anniversary of winning their gold medal, and it’s my 40th anniversary as well … and we’re friends.

“Some of my friends are saying it’s a midlife crisis, but I’m too old for a midlife crisis!”

Sir Steve is the third celebrity to be revealed for Dancing On Ice 2025.

Former TOWIE star Ferne McCann confirmed The Sun’s exclusive story that she had signed up during Monday’s Good Morning Britain.

We previously told how she had agreed to take part in Dancing On Ice after quitting her own reality show Ferne McCann: First Time Mum.

Mollie Pearce, from BBC One’s The Traitors, was the second star contestant to be announced during ITV1’s Lorraine.

FA Cup prize money dramatically increased as EFL and non-league clubs compensated for scrapping of replays

THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION have significantly increased the FA Cup prize money after replays were controversially axed.

EFL and non-league clubs were outraged back in April after a joint decision from the Premier League and the FA to scrap rematches in the legendary competition.

The FA agreed to put an extra £2.34million into the prize pot for rounds one to three[/caption]

Officials announced they would seek compensation for their clubs and branded the initiative as “frustrating and disappointing”.

They also claimed they had been sidelined and expressed fears that the new format would deny already cash-strapped sides of lucrative fixtures with some of the country’s biggest clubs.

The EFL believed the decision occurred as a result of the expansion of Uefa’s calendar with the controversial introduction of the repackaged Club World Cup, which led to furious reaction from players.

According to The Mail, however, a compensation has now been agreed following a series of high-level talks.

The FA agreed to put an extra £2.34million into the prize pot for rounds one to three.

That means the total kitty could increase by 38 per cent compared to last season.

Therefore, defeated clubs from Round One will make £15,000 compared to nothing from last year.

Those who are defeated in the second round will receive a total of £65,000, which is up from £41,000.

And finally those who make it to Round Three before being knocked out will pocket £145,000.

Replays had been a key part of the FA Cup tradition, which is why the new plans received such a furious reaction.

Throughout the competition’s history there have been a number of highly-lucrative rematches for some of the lower-tier clubs.

Why FA Cup changes are GOOD NEWS

By Martin Lipton

THE FA and Premier League should have done the deal to scrap FA Cup replays years ago.

No doubt traditionalists will moan but it is right that the competition has finally been brought into the 21st century.

Ending replays will bring extra sharpness and excitement to the ties, with the knowledge that there will be a winner, whether in 90 minutes, extra-time or penalties.

If big guns have a bad day, they are more likely to pay the price. Replays after draws give them a fall-back they do not deserve.

Giving the FA Cup total and absolute priority over four weekends – and ensuring there is no competing match on the day of the Final – will enhance the profile of a competition that was in danger of falling out of the spotlight.

And as long as the FA ensures a better split of the prize money fund, weighting it more towards the earlier rounds, and potentially a similar move with  TV match money, there should be few losers.

Huge ITV show shelved after bosses ‘struggle’ to find celebs willing to take part

ITV has shelved the 2024 series of The Real Full Monty after struggling to find celebrities willing to take part on the show.

The annual event saw two groups of celebs – one male, one female – perform a strip tease to a theatre audience in order to encourage people to get cancer checks.

Ashley Banjo appeared in every series of the long-running show

Each of the two performances ended with the cast baring all after whipping off their clothes.

Previous stars of the series included Coleen Nolan, Pete Wicks, Linda Lusardi, James Jordan and Christine McGuinness.

Ashley Banjo has been the long-running lead of the cast, using his choreography skills to create the routine.

However, it seems stars have been reluctant to bare all this year, and now ITV have decided to sit out this year.

A source told The Mirror: “Getting celebrities to agree to take off all their clothes in front of not only a live audience, but millions more thanks to the cameras, is no small task.

“Even Coleen Nolan, who has been involved for many years, has told how absolutely terrifying she finds it. So the decision has been made to give it a break. It does not mean it will never come back, but there are no plans in the pipeline at this point.”

An ITV spokesperson confirmed the news and said: “The Real Full Monty has taken a number of guises over the past few years from the original men-only line-up, to a version on ice, in order to raise awareness around cancer. We are resting the format this year.”

However, it seems the team are keen to keep the show alive in future years.

Inspired by the smash-hit 1997 movie starring Robert Carlyle, The Real Full Monty has been used to raise awareness for signs and symptoms of cancer.

It has since been picked up for versions in the US, France, The Netherlands and Germany.

Over the course of the one-hour specials, stars opened up on how cancer personally affected their lives, whether it be by a close family member or themselves being diagnosed.

There would also be scenes showing best ways to check for signs of breast and testicular cancer.

Last year’s series was a Christmas special, cheekily titled Jingle Balls, and featured appearances from Paul Burrell, who had just recovered from prostate cancer, and Ashley Cain, whose daughter Azaylia died in 2021 aged just eight months from a rare form of leukaemia.
