Rachel Reeves must avoid catastrophic Budget mistakes by raising taxes and stunting growth, warns Jeremy Hunt

RACHEL Reeves must avoid catastrophic Budget mistakes by raising taxes and stunting growth, Jeremy Hunt says.

The Chancellor was targeted by her predecessor who suggested there could be a £39billion surplus instead of her supposed £22billion black hole.

He warned Rachel Reeves she must avoid catastrophic Budget mistakes by raising taxes[/caption]

The warning shot came as official figures showed the economy grew by 0.5 per cent in the three months to June, down from earlier estimates of 0.6 per cent.

When asked if the economy will get worse before it gets better, he said: “They will get worse if Labour makes catastrophic mistakes in the budget and hikes up tax in a way that destroys growth.

“I think one of the biggest lies we’ve had since Labour came to office is this nonsense about having the worst economic inheritance since the Second World War.”

He also claimed the Government could even have a budget surplus of £39 billion to play with in next month’s Budget.

Mr Hunt warned that welfare reform may now be “untouchable” following the backlash to means-test the winter fuel allowance.

Ministers have already warned of difficult decisions at her first Budget on tax, welfare and Whitehall spending.

Labour chair Ellie Reeves said: “Instead of an apology, Jeremy Hunt has criticised every tough decision the Labour government is making to fix their mess.

“It is like watching an arsonist chastise the fire brigade for putting the fire out.”

Meanwhile, official figures yesterday showed gross domestic product grew by 0.5 per cent in the three months to June.

They were down from earlier estimates that the economy had grown by 0.6 per cent during the period.

The downgrade marks a sharper slowdown on the 0.7 per cent growth in the first quarter as consumers cut back on spending.

Separate figures have shown the economy had zero growth in June and July.

The Chancellor’s Budget has already caused businesses to put hiring and investment plans on ice with a fresh poll showing a deteriorating outlook for growth.

Despite Labour’s pro-growth agenda, a poll by the CBI showed that private companies expect no change for the rest of the year while manufacturing output is expected to shrink for the first time in ten months.

Alpesh Paleja, CBI interim deputy chief economist said: “After a run of positive expectations, the outlook for growth for the rest of this year has deteriorated.

They said that the budget needed ‘to give businesses the confidence they need to invest'”.

Soft justice fury as cop who downloaded child abuse pics let off by prosecutors

A COP who downloaded child abuse images was let off by prosecutors in another example of soft justice for paedophiles.

Sgt Gavin Kelly was arrested in July 2022 following a tip-off to the National Crime Agency by authorities in New Zealand.

The Sun demands that ALL paedophiles caught with ‘Category A’ child abuse images should be sent to jail to keep our kids safe

Officers found pics and videos of children on devices at his home.

Findings were passed to the Crown Prosecution Service but it ruled the threshold for charging was not met.

Instead, he faced a Thames Valley Police disciplinary panel which concluded he would have been sacked for gross misconduct, if he had not already quit.

A subsequent investigation found he allegedly viewed, received and/or distributed more than 35 pictures involving sexual activity and featuring children and animals.

There was also evidence Kelly had taken a picture of a female officer’s cleavage which he sent to two colleagues.

Kelly, based at Loddon Valley, Berks, denied some of the claims insisting he could not recall downloading the images, possibly because he had been drinking.

But he accepted viewing five illegal images of children and keeping Category A indecent snaps on his laptop and phone, as well as bestiality pics.

He also admitted failing to report or disclose the images.

A misconduct panel found all allegations proven and Kelly has been barred from working as an officer.

The panel said: “The demand for such abhorrent material creates a market for its supply. Individuals such as Gavin Kelly are fundamental in an illicit chain with the sexual abuse of children at its core.”

After leniency towards BBC star Huw Edwards for making indecent images of children, The Sun launched our Keep Our Kids Safe campaign, demanding jail for anyone caught with the worst images.

Ex-detective Peter Bleksley said the CPS should retest the Kelly evidence, adding: “Because he is out of the police they may feel it is job done but it isn’t until justice is served for these children.

But before setting off, Joanna Lumley appeared on screen as she sent him a supportive message.

The Absolutely Fabulous star previously starred on the format and offered up friendly advice to Phil.

In a video message, Joanna said: “Listen, Phil these are the tips I’ve got, keep your knives sharp, spend much of the day trying to find wood otherwise you won’t be able to eat anything.

“When I was on the island I made a pair of shoes out of my bra… and I would love to think that you could do something a bit challenging, and bring it back so we could all look at it.

“I shall be thinking of you all the time Phil, and actually I’m a little bit jealous, lots of love.”

The message visibly moved Phil as he replied: “Oh you darling, thank you so much, that’s amazing.”
