Cristiano Ronaldo agreed to rejoin Man Utd in 2013 with Real Madrid star in £200m deal before cash row, club icon claims

CRISTIANO RONALDO and Gareth Bale both agreed to join Manchester United in 2013 – but the club wouldn’t cough up £200m.

United legend Patrice Evra revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson believed Ronaldo’s return was nearly 100 per cent agreed, four years after the Portugal star left for Real Madrid in a then-record £80m deal.

And the legendary Red Devils boss also worked on trying to land Bale from Tottenham at the same time.

But then Ferguson – who had just won the Premier League title – was forced to confirm to his players that he would in fact be retiring.

Former left-back Evra said on The Obi One podcast: “It was one of the most sad days. I didn’t cry, I was in shock.

“The reason why, is two weeks before, he brought me into his office and said: “Look at those people, they think I am going to retire, I am going to be here another 10 years but we need to win more Champions Leagues.”

“He said: ‘Patrice, Cristiano has agreed 99 per cent to come back and Gareth Bale.’ He needed £200m and the club refused. Now they have spent a billion, whatever.

“I remembered when I got out of his office, I was like, ‘Cristiano is back, Gareth Bale, we are back in business’. Imagine. That’s what he said.”

Since then, United have spent a record £1.19bn on transfers and £40m on managers while running up a debt of nearly £1bn. Still no title, though.

As a result Bale, who was flying at Spurs, instead joined Madrid in the summer of 2013 for an updated world record fee of £86m.

David Moyes came in at Old Trafford and signed Marouane Fellaini instead.

Ronaldo would go on to stay at Los Blancos until 2018, winning four more Champions League titles.

Wanting a new challenge, he joined Italian giants Juventus and picked up back-to-back Serie A titles in 2019 and 2020.

He would eventually get his comeback move to Old Trafford in 2021, where he was named in the Premier League Team of the Year, scoring 16 goals in an otherwise underwhelming campaign for United.

But Ronaldo left for Al-Nassr just over a year later after launching a verbal attack on the club in a tell-all explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Bale himself returned to Tottenham on a season-long loan in 2020 before returning to Madrid for a term.

The Welsh star joined Los Angeles in 2022 and announced his retirement a year later.

I won £7.5k on the lottery but refuse to share it with my man – he’s now sulking so I’ve secretly given it to charity

SHE was left stunned when she discovered she’d won £7,500 on the lottery.

But one woman has explained how her epic win was somewhat marred by the reaction of her boyfriend, who tried to “steamroller” her in to spending it on a car.

But her winnings caused a huge row with her boyfriend, who attempted to “steamroller” her into spending it on a car[/caption]

She opened up in a post on Reddit, as she explained that before the win, they were both living off her pay – as she works both full and part-time jobs, while he’s a full-time student who works in the summer.

“We both walk or take the public everywhere to save money,” she wrote.

“In the morning we stop at a corner shop shortly before splitting up for the day.”

While her boyfriend of four years allowed himself the luxury of buying cigarettes and coffee, her guilty pleasure was splashing out on lottery tickets at the weekend.

“He always makes fun of me for paying the ‘stupid tax’,” she continued.

“But I figure my indulgence is cheaper and doesn’t come with lung cancer.

“Sometimes I jokingly tell him not to expect a penny when I win.”

So when she did end up winning, he told her: “Fine, keep it all! It’s not like I’m crying over a penny of nothing over here.”

He also “dismissively” told her that she’d probably spent more than that on lottery tickets over the years.

“In response I asked what I should blow his half on for myself,” she said.

“I was honestly joking at the time but he suddenly became angrier than I’ve ever seen him and I didn’t want to admit I’d been kidding because he was so p**sed off it p**sed me off.”

His determination to use the money to buy a car also put her off sharing any of the cash with him.

“He keeps trying to steamroller me so I’m refusing to share the money,” she wrote.

“In all honesty I’m willing to spend or save the money for us but I don’t want a car.

“I won’t use a car and it will keep costing us money in parking and maintenance.”

She added that after “weeks of him sulking and lecturing me about his ‘entitlement’ to the money”, he took her to a car garage and tried to “embarrass” her into going along with a purchase in front of the salesman.

Curse of lotto winners

Despite hitting the jackpot, countless UK lotto winners have suffered astonishing tragedies and lost their fortunes.

Callie Rogers

Callie became Britain’s youngest lottery winner when she won £1.9million in 2003.

The 16-year-old from Cumbria gave up her £3.60-an-hour checkout job and went on a spending spree, purchasing a £180,000 bungalow and a £76,000 home for her mum.

But she ultimately blew thousands on wild parties, three boob jobs and drugs, plus around £300,000 on designer clothes.

Eighteen years after her win, Callie was found to be claiming Universal Credit after blowing her fortune.

Michael Carrol

The self-styled ‘King of Chavs’ was 19 when he scooped £9,736,131 on the National Lottery in November 2002.

The part-time binman, who was wearing an electronic tag when he bought his winning ticket, immediately bought a £340,000 six-bedroom home in Norfolk.

He spent a further £400,000 on lavish home upgrades and dropped £49,000 on a BMW to park in his drive. He most notably invested £1million in Rangers FC shares.

Michael’s wife, Sandra, left him over his incessant party boy lifestyle and took £1.4million from the divorce settlement. By 2010, he had declared bankruptcy.

Roger Griffiths

Griffiths and his wife Lara netted £1.8million on the National Lottery in 2005.

Quitting their day jobs, the couple enjoyed expensive holidays and luxury motors and also splashed £800,000 on a barn conversion in Wetherby, West Yorks.

After wannabe rock star Roger spent £25,000 making a music record, the couple divested into safer assets but the global financial crisis hit and rendered them worthless.

In 2010, their uninsured home tragically went up in flames – and all their funds dried up three years later.

Lee Ryan

Ex-jailbird Ryan scooped the £6.5million jackpot just 17 weeks after the lottery was launched in 1994.

It later emerged he was accused of handling stolen cars and was imprisoned for 18 months after his huge payout.

Once released he spent a decade enjoying his riches, even buying a helicopter and a £2million mansion but ultimately ended up penniless.

Lee was dealt his final blow when he took an ill-fated trip to Kyrgyzstan and invested the last of his winnings in property, which failed due to an economic crisis.

Gillian and Adrian Bayford

The loving couple’s lives changed overnight in 2012 when they scooped a staggering £148million.

But just 15 months after the win, their eight-year marriage ended with both parties partly blaming stress on their mind-boggling win.

Adrian shacked up with ex-horse groomer Samantha Burbidge, who ended up bolting with his money, 30 horses, a horse box, and a car he gifted her.

Gillian was convicted of attacking her ex-lover Gavin Innes. She then moved on and started dating fraudster Brian Deans, who ended up in jail, and last made the headlines in 2021 for claiming nearly £40,000 in furlough cash.

Margaret Loughrey

Margaret scooped £27million in 2013 and became Northern Ireland’s biggest winner at the time.

However, the 48-year-old later admitted the huge fortune didn’t bring her any happiness.

She told local media: “Money has brought me nothing but grief. It has destroyed my life.”

Tragically, in September last year, Margaret, by now in her 50s, was found dead in her home.

Martyn and Kay Tott

The Totts got the shock of their lives when they realised they’d won £3million back in 2001 – six months after buying the ticket.

By the time they saw an appeal for the winner to come forward, they couldn’t find the ticket.

Computer records in their local Londis proved Kay really had purchased the ticket.

But a little-known rule stipulating that lost tickets must be reported within 30 days meant they would never receive the cash – eventually putting too much strain on their marriage and causing it to break down.

The woman explained that was the last straw and, when they “left without buying anything”, she went to her mums and “paid our rent up to the end of the year and donated the rest to charity”.

She concluded by admitting he still doesn’t know, and she’s unsure “how to come clean”.

“I haven’t told my boyfriend I spent the money I won because I was upset he was being a d**k,” she wrote.

“He’s already angry at me. What do I do?”

People were quick to reassure the woman that she hadn’t done anything wrong, with one writing: “You spent your money buying the tickets, it’s technically your winning money.

“It’s not like you’re married, that’d be a little different.

“He’s just mad that he didn’t support your buying the tickets in the first place so now he looks entitled.”

“I think you spent the money very wisely.

“Plus now he doesn’t have to worry about rent? He better not complain.”

She later shared an update in which she revealed she’d split from her boyfriend, adding: “It’s been really rough accepting he’s not the guy I fell in love with anymore but the way he’s been acting has made it a lot easier.

“I’m mostly angry I sunk so much of my time and money and compromised my future for him.

“But I guess it’s better I found out now instead of later.”

Prem title winner Mario Balotelli, 34, ‘debating’ transfer to minnows with stadium 26 times smaller than Man City

MARIO BALOTELLI is nearing a move to Spanish lower-league side Intercity, according to reports.

The Italian, 34, has been without a club since leaving Turkish outfit Adana Demirspor in June.

The former Manchester City and Liverpool star did not find a new team prior to the summer transfer deadline.

But according to Spanish outlet AS, a deal to join Spanish third-tier side Intercity is getting closer.

They add that talks are “ongoing” but that the deal is not yet over the line.

Balotelli scored seven goals in 16 games in Turkey’s top flight last season, having missed much of the campaign with a knee injury.

He even wore Adana Demirspor’s captain’s armband on a few occasions prior to leaving.

Intercity were formed in 2017 and play in Spain’s Alicante region.

They boast one player among their ranks that has previously played in English football; ex-Middlesbrough and Birmingham ace Emilio Nsue.

The full-back, 34, played in England between 2014 and 2018, before later going on to sign for Intercity in 2022.

Should Balotelli join the Spanish side, he could find himself going up against reserve teams.

That’s because Intercity play in the same league as Sevilla, Real Betis and Atletico Madrid’s B teams, drawing 1-1 with the latter last month.

Intercity’s stadium holds a capacity of just 2,000 people – a far cry from the 53,600 that can pack into the Etihad for Man games.

Intercity are listed on the stock exchange, with the possible arrival of Balotelli potentially raising the value of shares.

Should they close a deal for the former Azzurri international, he would not be able to be registered for games until January.

He could join up to train with them, however, giving him three months to get himself fully fit.

Major retailer with 77 sites to shut 17 stores before the end of the year – see the full list of locations affected

A major retailer with 77 sites across the UK has plans to close 17 stores before the end of the year.

Dobbies Garden Centre wants to shut 11 larger sites and six Little Dobbies stores all of which are unprofitable.

Dobbies Garden Centre will close 17 sites before the end of the year[/caption]

The retailer will also work with landlords to seek temporary rent reductions at a further nine sites.

It comes as part of a restructuring plan launched by the business to address “historically uneconomical rent costs”.

Dobbies began a financial overhaul of the business back in August, which it warned would lead to shop closures.

The full list of stores set to close are:

  • Altrincham
  • Antrim
  • Gloucester
  • Gosforth
  • Harlestone Heath
  • Huntingdon
  • Inverness
  • King’s Lynn
  • Pennine
  • Reading
  • Stratford-upon-Avon

Little Dobbies

  • Cheltenham
  • Chiswick
  • Clifton
  • Richmond
  • Stockbridge
  • Westbourne Grove

If the restructuring plan is approved the 17 sites will close by the end of the year.

A spokesperson told The Sun: “Subject to the RP being successfully approved, we expect the affected sites to cease trading by the end of the year.

“Thereafter, Dobbies will operate 60 stores and continue to play a key role in the market, working constructively with stakeholders and suppliers, and having an active and committed role in the communities in which it’s based.”

Restructuring plans are often launched by businesses when they find themselves in financial difficulty to help shore up extra costs.

The process can sometimes lead to store closures or job losses.

Talk of the closures has already upset locals of its Belfast branch, in Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Commenting on a social media post one customer said: “Go here often.. how very sad”.

While another said that they “could not believe it”.

It comes as many retailers are struggling to keep their heads above water.

High inflation coupled with a squeeze on consumers’ finances has meant people have less money to spend in the shops.

Garden centres and home improvement businesses also boomed during the pandemic when customers were stuck at home.

But customers have been forced to cut back on spending since.

Back in August, Homebase announced that 10 of its stores would close and be transformed into Sainsbury’s supermarkets.

Homebase’s owner, Hilco Capital, is preparing to sell the company.

The retailer has closed 106 stores since it was taken over by Hilco Capital in 2018.

Retailers closing stores in 2024

RETAILERS have been hit by soaring inflation and a downturn in spending due to the cost of living crisis.

High energy costs and a move to shopping online are also taking their toll.

Some high street shops have closed due to businesses opening up in different locations such as larger retail parks.

Shops may also close due to a number of other reasons, such as rising rents.

We explain which retailers are closing in 2024:

  • Argos – The brand announced plans to close 100 standalone UK branches last year as it looks to move away from the high street and focus on expanding its presence in supermarkets.
  • B&Q – The chain has over 300 shops across the UK, with two stores closing this year due to leases not being renewed. It has plans to open more in 2024 too.
  • Boots – The health and beauty chain announced that it would be closing 300 stores last July. Closures are ongoing and this will see the retailer’s estate reduced from 2,200 to 1,900 shops.
  • Clintons – Clintons mulled plans to close 38 shops in a bid to avoid insolvency late last year. We’ve listed the stores affected.
  • Costa Coffee – The caffeine giant has around 2,000 sites nationwide, so chances are you’ll have one near you. The chain has shut the doors to dozens of its sites recently. We’ve revealed which stores are due to close this year.
  • Iceland – The supermarket has more than 900 stores but closed nearly two dozen sites in 2023, and more selected shops are due to shut.
  • Lidl – The supermarket, which has 950 stores, is changing up shop locations, which has meant that some stores have to close. But the retailer is also looking to open 12 new supermarkets.
  • M&S – M&S, which runs 405 stores across the country, has been closing a string of branches across the country in a blow for shoppers. It’s not all bad news, though, because the chain also has big plans to open dozens of new shops.
  • Trespass – The firm announced in July last year that it was closing six branches, but more are on the way.
  • WHSmith – The retail giant, which runs over 1,100 stores, has shut eight stores since March 2023, but more are coming.
