I’m on the floor struggling so badly being a stay-at-home mum – it’s a thankless task & my family’s attitudes don’t help

A STAY-AT-HOME mum has revealed that she is struggling with the “thankless task” of raising her children, and has called for more recognition for the role she plays in society.

The mum said that she feels completely under-appreciated for the hard work she puts in, and struggles with a lack of self-worth.

“Currently on the floor, I know I’m capable of lots and I’m a good mum, but it’s a thankless task, both from family, day to day and society as a whole”, she told broadcaster Zoe Hardman and Georgia Dayton on their podcast Made By Mammas.

“More recognition for stay at home mums would help self-worth, as we don’t get it from anywhere else.”

“Stay at home mums have the hardest job in the world”, Zoe said, agreeing with the mum’s sentiment.

Georgia added that she understands that stay at home mums don’t have as much of a voice as working mums, because their focus is solely in their children.

She advised the mum to go out and meet other stay at home mums, to help her to feel more seen and supported.

“It’s very easy for stay at home mums to be overlooked, because there isn’t necessarily anyone always talking about the day to day.”

Zoe also pointed out that many mums don’t have any choice but to stay at home, as the UK has the worst paternity offer in Europe.

Additionally, with skyrocketing childcare costs, it is not economically viable for many mums to return to work after having children.

“How are we ever supposed to be equal in parenting, if one parent, predominantly mums, has to stay at home, and is out of the workplace for many years.”

“There no support for stay at home mums, they just have to get on with it.”

Zoe said that society should focus on stay at home mums having the most important job, and realise how brilliant and hardworking they are.

This way, stay at home mums wouldn’t be battling with their self-worth, she said.

Georgia added that stay at home mums have no breaks, and aren’t able to take time for themselves.

“So many people think that they can’t ask for help, because you don’t have to have the child care, but you do”, she said.

Bedtime tips for mums

IF YOU'RE fed up with your toddler refusing to go to bed, then keep reading.

A child health expert has revealed the five steps you need to take to calm your kid down for a good night’s sleep.

Dr Kaylene Henderson spoke to Nine Honey about what to do if your toddler just won’t seem to settle for the night.

Each child is different and needs a different amount of sleep depending on their age, but these easy steps can make the evenings a little easier for parents.

Just like adults, children need enough time to wind down before being put to bed.

One step to take is to ensure they have enough time to properly wind down after a busy day.

The expert recommends one to two hours to transition toddlers into bed time.

And it’s just as important that parents take the time to wind down and be more present to help toddlers feel calmer.

Dr Henderson explains: “Our children are like barometers of household tension after all.

“If we want our children to wind down, we need to make an effort to switch off – from our phones, our work emails and from the many other sources or distraction competing for our attention.”

We’ve all been told to turn our screens off before going to bed because the blue light stops our brains from producing melatonin, our body’s sleep hormone.

So the expert suggests turning it off 60 to 90 minutes before bed to ensure children get a good night’s sleep.

Music and meditation can also help get your child into the land of nod claims the expert.

She adds that slow-paced music, of around 60 beats per minute, can help their breath, heart rate, brain waves, and relax their muscles.

“There are also lovely guided meditations developed specifically to help young children to get to sleep at night.

Headspace for Kids dedicated section on sleep that is customised to three age groups: five and under, six to eight and nine to 12 – and you can try it for free,” she adds.

Finally, Dr Henderson recommends sticking to a nightly routine every night to help your toddler drift off easily.

When children know what to expect every night they find it easier to relax, and of course, fall asleep.

One of the best ways to do this is with a bedtime story.

She adds: “Remember, the goal is to transition our little ones towards sleep, so bedtime stories tend to be the perfect tool, in the perfect place.”

“You really need a break, being a stay at home mum is more than a full time job, and so therefore you do need to allow yourself little breaks.”

“You’re not a robot, I completely agree with you”, Zoe echoed.

Four Brits rescued as luxury yacht EXPLODES into flames before sinking off Spain hols island Menorca

FOUR Brits have been rescued after their motor yacht caught fire before sinking off the Menorcan capital Mahon.

The blaze broke out in the engine room before spreading rapidly to the rest of the vessel.

Dramatic footage showed coastguards who went to the rescue trying to put out the fire with high-pressure water jets as a huge plume of black smoke rose into the air.

Emergency responders had initially planned to tow the 40-ft boat to Mahon Port so firefighters could tackle the blaze with more sophisticated equipment.

But coastguards eventually decided to take it further out to sea to minimise the risk of explosion before it sank.

The British nationals had already been rescued unharmed and taken ashore on a boat belonging to a sailing club based at Mahon Port.

It was not immediately clear this morning if they were holidaymakers or lived locally.

The drama occurred around 6pm on Sunday when the motor yacht was in an area known as the Mahon Channel.

It sank around two hours later around four nautical miles south-east of Mahon Port.

The nationality of those on board emerged this morning.

I cheated with my brother-in-law and had his baby – he looks enough like me so I’m not sure anyone’s sussed

THEY say a problem shared is a problem halved – but do you ever feel there are some problems that are so big it can sometimes seem like there’s no solution?

That’s exactly how Lana* felt when she found out she was pregnant after having an affair with her brother-in-law.

a silhouette of a man and a pregnant woman in front of a window
Lana had an affair – and a baby – with her brother-in-law [stock image]

Despite having been with her partner for almost a decade, the mum-of-one had several passionate encounters with her partner’s brother which resulted in her youngest son, now one, being born.

And Lana admits that she hasn’t told anyone about the deceit, including her partner or the baby’s dad.

Constantly ‘tortured’ by the past

When she initially called ‘agony uncle’ and YouTube star Dr John Delony to open up about the affair she’d had with her brother-in-law, Lana was coy about revealing the extent of her dilemma.

Laughing nervously. Lana began: “My question is, how you do move on from [the] past, and lots of horrible past things and just change your life and get your marriage back?”

“There’s another complication to the story here… Well, two… It was my brother-in-law.”

Lana

Explaining her relationship background, Lana revealed her seven year marriage had been impacted by emotional abuse from both sides – and they’d both cheated.

On his side, the infidelity started a year or so into their marriage, and on her side, Lana confessed she began cheating three years ago – once online, and another physical relationship.

The couple then sat down two years ago and both came clean to each other about the affairs they’d had.

Lana says: “We shared it all. We asked the big question if we truly wanted to make this work and the only way to move forward was to share it all was our decision.”

Dr Delony asks: “What was the result of that hard conversation?

“Did you know he’d been cheating on you, and he knew you’d been cheating on him, or was it a shock to both of you?

Lana replied they both knew, and John then asks: “So what’s changed in the last two years, or do you find yourself back in the same spot?”

She says: “Uh thankfully not, in the same spot. I feel like I’m constantly tortured by my past… remembering what he’s done, and then what I’ve done, and hating myself for it.”

‘There’s another complication…’

Exploring where his caller is at currently, Dr Delony asks: “Do you have images that pop into your head of him being sexually involved with another woman?

“Do you have moments… when you think of physically think of being with this other guy and it makes you smile, your heart beat faster, and then you feel sick about it?”

Lana agrees, before adding: “There’s another complication to the story here… Well, two.

“It was my brother-in-law.”

“Have you said it out loud? You slept with your sister-in-law’s husband! That happened, you did that – you shouldn’t have done that, can we agree on that?”

Dr John Delony

A shocked Dr Delony replies: “Man, that makes Thanksgiving awkward, huh?”

“Nobody talks about it,” Lana answers, before a surprised Dr Delony asks: “Do they not see the little kid running around?”

Lana says: “They do, but he looks enough like me… I don’t know.

Dr Delony replies: “Oh my gosh, the dysfunction is multi-level.”

Moving forward

Seeking advice, Lana reveals she feels lost, and doesn’t know how to move forward, saying: “Should this be out in the open and then we never go over to his family or see any of them? I don’t know.”

Dr Delony says: “They don’t know? Your sister-in-law doesn’t know it was you, or she just doesn’t tell anyone?

“I’m confident everyone knows and for the sake of your husband and this little baby, everybody is trying to keep the peace.

“Here’s the deal. You said ‘I do’ forever. He violated that. You violated that.

“As a consequence of that violation now you have another child. Another marriage is destroyed.

I’m not going to put that all on you, I’m going to put that on him [too].”

Small steps to a solution

However, while Lana clearly felt hopeless at the beginning of the call, Dr Delony reassures her that by breaking it down, it can be dealt with and managed.

Dr Delony adds: “All that sounds so complicated and feels like the smoke is so thick – it’s really not.

“One of my favourite things to do in a situation like this is to sit down with somebody when everything feels like it’s on fire and actually unwind it.

“Really what you have before you is a repeated series of small steps that is going to be the next six months, the next one year, the next five years, the next 25 years of your life.

“And that is choosing to do the next right thing.

“That is intentionally having once a week or for right now, maybe twice or three times a week thirty minute check ins with your husband – ‘how are you? How are you feeling?’

“The commitment to him and him to you – there will be no more secrets.

“We’re practicing not having secrets anymore, which means we’re practicing telling the truth which means we’re practicing vulnerability, which means we’re practicing how to be married.

“Have you said it out loud? You slept with your sister-in-law’s husband! That happened, you did that – you shouldn’t have done that, can we agree on that?”

Four red flags your partner is cheating

Private Investigator Aaron Bond from BondRees revealed four warning signs your partner might be cheating.

They start to take their phone everywhere with them

In close relationships, it’s normal to know each other’s passwords and use each other’s phones, if their phone habits change then they may be hiding something.

Aaron says: “If your partner starts changing their passwords, starts taking their phone everywhere with them, even around the house or they become defensive when you ask to use their phone it could be a sign of them not being faithful.”

“You should also look at how they place their phone down when not in use. If they face the phone with the screen facing down, then they could be hiding something.”

They start telling you less about their day

When partners cheat they can start to avoid you, this could be down to them feeling guilty or because it makes it easier for them to lie to you.

“If you feel like your partner has suddenly begun to avoid you and they don’t want to do things with you any more or they stop telling you about their day then this is another red flag.”

“Partners often avoid their spouses or tell them less about their day because cheating can be tough, remembering all of your lies is impossible and it’s an easy way to get caught out,” says Aaron.

Their libido changes

Your partner’s libido can change for a range of reasons so it may not be a sure sign of cheating but it can be a red flag according to Aaron.

Aaron says: “Cheaters often have less sex at home because they are cheating, but on occasions, they may also have more sex at home, this is because they feel guilty and use this increase in sex to hide their cheating.  You may also find that your partner will start to introduce new things into your sex life that weren’t there before.”

They become negative towards you

Cheaters know that cheating is wrong and to them, it will feel good, this can cause tension and anxiety within themselves which they will need to justify.

“To get rid of the tension they feel inside they will try to convince themselves that you are the problem and they will become critical of you out of nowhere.  Maybe you haven’t walked the dog that day, put the dishes away or read a book to your children before bedtime.  A small problem like this can now feel like a big deal and if you experience this your partner could be cheating,” warns Aaron.

‘For gods sake, don’t cheat’

Speaking about the positives Lana can take going forward, Dr Delony goes on to say: “You have an amazing young kid… We’re going to honour this little kid and at the same time we’re not going to shroud this thing in shame.

“Going to family events and pretending like things didn’t happen – that’s the curse of generations.

“It’s the fog that hangs over every get-together. The black smoke that is in the air around ever interaction with family members.

“At some point your husband – it’s his family – at some point he’s got to step up and say ‘hey this happened, this is what we’re doing about it, it’s going to be great’.”

At the end of the call, Dr Delony adds: “For god’s sake – don’t cheat. Period. And especially don’t cheat with family members. No more.

“Thank you for being brave and for your call.”

Swinging, drug-taking & marriages blighted by affairs – inside the shocking secrets of the modern day Mormon church

LIFE as a Mormon has been kept behind closed doors for the most part – that’s until Taylor Frankie Paul and her hip gang of Mormon wives took to our TV screens to bare all.

Every reality show needs a hefty dose of drama and controversy which is exactly what this eye-opening bunch of women provide.

Strict rules dictate no sex before marriage, a ban on coffee and alcohol whilst adultery ‘is unequivocally condemned by the Lord.’

But Taylor Frankie Paul claims rules get majorly broken as she claims to expose the shocking secrets of her group of Mormon mums known as ‘MomTok’.

It all started thanks to TikTok, where many Mormon wives such as Taylor Frankie Paul, Nara Smith and Hannah from Ballerina Farm were able to make a life outside of the home.

Like most religions, Mormons, the main branch of the Latter Day Saint movement, have a set of values and moral codes to follow.

And it’s a life of debauchery which includes soft swinging, drug taking and highly-charged divorce.

Lifting the lid on what really goes on behind closed doors is hit TV show The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives where Taylor unveils some dark hidden secrets.

Taylor and her ex-husband split because of their soft swinging parties[/caption]

FULL SWING

Taylor first came under the spotlight on TikTok where she was seen with Mormon mums Camille Munday and Miranda McWhorter, who she often joked were her “sister wives.”

But in May 2022 Taylor posted a video announcing she was splitting with her husband as she showed herself in a new house surrounded by boxes.

Later, came another post with a cryptic message: “My life falling apart. And I can’t even speak on why … without bringing them all down with me.”

The internet sleuths soon discovered the drama involved Taylor and other sets of couples (who she has never publicly named) who were involved in soft swinging – which led to her divorce.

She revealed in a livestream that she and her partner were in an ‘open relationship’ while raising their two children and began doing soft swinger parties with friends – meaning there was couple swapping but no sex.

Speaking on the Viall Podcast, she says: “It wasn’t even a conversation [when it started]. I think we were all drinking and partying…then the guys were like, ‘You girls should make out. Make out. It’s hot.’ And we were like, ‘OK, it’s hot.’ So we make out.

“And that’s that and I feel like I had done that in my younger years so it wasn’t a big deal to me.”

According to Taylor, the same thing happened at the next party.

She reveals: “And then it was like, ‘Let’s take off your clothes and do lingerie pictures together while making out.’ It just escalated.”

A game of blindfolded spin the bottle came later, with Taylor revealing how the other women’s husbands would kiss her and she’d have to guess who it was.

But there was one couple in particular she and her husband were invested in and they had formed an even closer relationship compared to the other couples at the swinger parties.

Mentioning no names Taylor reveals how she and her husband and the unnamed couple were willing to go all the way when swapping partners – but her husband decided to put a stop to things before it could happen.

Taylor claims she had already developed feelings for her friend’s husband and he had felt the same – leading to them going ‘all the way’ and Taylor and her husband filed for divorce.

Camille and Miranda, who were part of MomTok before the drama escalated have not been seen or mentioned on the TV show and have both denied being part of the parties.

However, shortly after the swingers scandal became public knowledge, Miranda and her husband split too.

The show now follows the lives of Taylor and fellow Mormon wives Demi Engemann, Jennifer Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura, Layla Taylor, Mayci Neeley, Mikayla Matthews and Whitney Leavitt.

Whitney Leavitt revealed the rumours Conner was cheating and on dating apps were true[/caption]

CHEAT SHEET

With adultery being utterly condemned by God in the view of the church – you’d think those in the limelight and married would be more careful.

But it seems that some can’t resist a bit of danger – including Whitney’s husband Conner who decided to go onto Tinder using old photos of himself to find women to hook up with while Whitney looked after their child.

When Whitney discussed the problem on the show the women began to ask questions, which leads Whitney to clarify that while there was no physical cheating, the issue has been going on, “our whole marriage.”

“Full on conversations with women and pictures and all of that stuff,” she says, clarifying Conner was both sending and receiving nude photos. “It makes me feel like my whole marriage was just like a lie.”

Of course, there’s also the issue of Taylor swinging with her ex-husband and a group of their friends but it also seems her new boyfriend and father to her third child may be in trouble too.

The end of the series saw Dakota be questioned about when he had relations with a woman named Jenny, with Taylor saying if she found out he was seeing them both at the same time she would ‘1000% break up with him’.

On recent TikTok videos Taylor has hinted that the pair may have split as she cryptically wrote: “not me slowly morphing into 2022 me,” the time she was going through her divorce and the ‘swingers scandal’.

CAFFEINE BAN

According to the church, coffee and tea were banned as part of the Word of Wisdom from God as they claim in the 18th century it was used as a substitute for alcohol – also a big no-no among believers.

However, some of the rule-breaking Mormon wives are seen enjoying vodka and wine, especially Jessi who says it doesn’t affect her belief in the church.

Taylor even shared a recent TikTok video of herself sipping a cup of coffee as she went to clean her house – and we can’t blame her being a busy mum-of-three with a newborn.

She was also arrested in 2022 which was captured on the show after getting drunk and throwing a chair at her partner, but has now been sober for over a year.

Many Mormons, and the church, claim that some rules shouldn’t be questioned and simply taken as the Word of God.

HIGH TIMES

While Mormons typically follow the Word of Wisdom – God’s code of conduct that bans caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and recreational drugs – there seems to be loopholes the Mormon wives flout.

And while the use of drugs is only allowed for medicinal purposes Whitney admits to using ketamine in therapy sessions while Demi also confessed it had even strengthened her marriage.

In one episode the women decided to head to the clinic to get some Botox and while there, were able to have fun on laughing gas before getting injected.

“It’s a party,” Whitney says while giggling. When producers asked her if the group ‘comes for the Botox or the laughing gas,’ she answered: “For both.”

CHURCHES SAY

In a statement released by the church prior to the TV show’s release they called out recent “productions” that depict Latter-day Saints in an inaccurate fashion.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, like other prominent global faith communities, often finds itself the focus of the attention of the entertainment industry,” the statement read.

“Some portrayals are fair and accurate, but others resort to stereotypes or gross misrepresentations that are in poor taste.”

The brunette beauty recently fans totally horrified with her latest movie, The Substance, with traumatised Brits allegedly calling it quits and leaving the cinema just minutes into the body horror.

One cinema-goer said: “At least 20 people walked out of my screening in Leicester Square before the end. It was brutal.

“Most people watched it through their hands. It was the most graphic film I’ve ever seen.”

Demi plays fading celeb Elisabeth Sparkle, who uses a black market drug that creates a younger version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley, 29 — but with horrific side effects.

The Ghost star knew the movie would be divisive – but that didn’t stop her from signing up and proudly attending the premiere of it earlier this September.

Stepping out at the Toronto Film Festival in Canada, Demi looked flawless – and fans refused to believe she was 61.

Over on Reddit fans were quick to praise her ”age defying beauty”, with one saying: “What the f**k. 61 years? She looks beautiful.

From a strict no-alcohol rule to a special Amazon bargain you can bag for a quid, here’s everything the mum-of-three swears by to keep the wrinkles at bay…

Big on moisturiser

According to the actress, she used to take notes from her mother when it comes to maintaining a youthful glow, Women’s Health reported.

She said: “My mother always drilled in me no matter what that you should wash, cleanse and moisturise your skin.”

The star, who’s turning 62 in November, added that she hydrates more just her face – her neck, chest area and boobs also get lathered in rich lotion.

Make-up removing towel

Meanwhile, when it’s finally time to remove the foundation at the end of a star-studded red carpet event, Demi will use a gentle make-up removing cloth.

“This thing literally takes everything off,” said Demi who dubbed it ”magic”.

Fellow beauty buffs can get their hands on the make-up essential from the high street, including Primark, or Amazon where a pack-of-five will set you back just a fiver – or £1 per cloth.

But not only has going sober changed her mental health for good, it’s also had a positive impact on Demi’s skin.

Turns out, your favourite alcoholic bevvy actually decreased the amount of anti-diuretic hormones in your system – which is a substance that gives your skin that healthy glow and hydration.

What’s better than a relaxing massage at the end of a long working week? But your face can benefit it from too – and at 61, Demi is living proof of it.

After following her usual skincare, Demi will rub a stone across her jawline, up into her cheekbones, along her forehead and down her neck.

“You work through all the tension in your face,” the A-lister explained.

“It activates the blood flow in your skin. When you’re over 50 and you feel like your skin is hitting the floor, this is an incredible uplift.”

It all starts from within

Whilst having a chat with fellow star Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi dropped a knowledge bomb and revealed her top skincare tip – taking care of yourself from within.

”But I definitely think beauty starts on the inside,” the celeb said appearing on Good panel.

”You can do anything you want to the outside, but if the inside isn’t looking or feeling good, then I don’t know if anything you do on the outside is going to be good enough.”

Everyone can see the kids playing in the sand – but only those with a high IQ can solve the taxing illusion and find the small sea creature.

It may look simple – two little kids building sandcastles while a man and woman – presumably their mum and dad – enjoy the sea.

But the busy scene makes it hard to distinguish where the animal is lurking inside the image.

Are you able to work out where the crab lies in the image?

It might seem a bit daunting at first, but the key is to carefully examine each section of the scene.

Be quick, the clock is ticking! Scroll down to reveal the answer if you’re still stumped.

Meanwhile, why not try some other optical illusions while you scroll?

Test your brain power and solve the questions in this test to reveal if you have a high IQ.

This picture will surely leave you baffled – and you might scratch your head trying to find the correct solution.

Although it may seem like an ordinary image, this is no easy feat, and the average person gives up after a minute.

How can optical illusions and brainteasers help me?

Engaging in activities like solving optical illusions and brainteasers can have many cognitive benefits as it can stimulate various brain regions.

Some benefits include:

  • Cognitive stimulation: Engaging in these activities challenges the brain, promoting mental agility and flexibility.
  • Problem-solving skills: Regular practice enhances analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Memory improvement: These challenges often require memory recall and can contribute to better memory function.
  • Creativity: They encourage thinking outside the box, fostering creativity and innovative thought processes.
  • Focus and attention: Working on optical illusions and brainteasers requires concentration, contributing to improved focus.
  • Stress relief: The enjoyable nature of these puzzles can act as a form of relaxation and stress relief.

If you look thoroughly, you’ll spot the crab nestled in the vibrant green leaves brows at the centre-left of the picture.

But don’t panic if you didn’t spot it – scroll down below to find the solution.

Psychologists at The University of Glasgow found that staring at an optical illusion can improve eyesight by allowing you to see small print.

Escape London says puzzles can also give your mind a great workout and may “boost your brain’s activity” which “reduces the risk of dementia.”

And according to ZenBusiness: “These visual puzzles can give you a good mental workout that can, in turn, help you think more efficiently and solve problems more easily.”

But, a number of big-name retailers have announced they will be returning to the high street, in a move that’s sure to delight shoppers.

Many of the brands including Toys R Us, Cath Kidston and M&Co are returning under new ownership having previously fallen into administration.

It has been a tough time for retailers since Covid and many have struggled.

The rising cost of living, expensive rents and lower footfall have all played a part in the demise of some of our much-loved high street names.

However, here is a full list of the much-loved brands making their return:

Cath Kidston

Fashion and homeware chain Cath Kidston will open its first new store next month as it returns to UK high streets.

Renowned for its charming floral designs and quirky vintage-style homeware, Cath Kidston had been a beloved fixture on the British high street since 1993.

However, the retailer crashed into administration last year and the last of its bricks-and-mortar stores closed in June 2023.

Next acquired the Cath Kidston brand, meaning people could continue to buy online and at the retailer’s stores.

Now it is due to open a new store on October 18 at Westfield White City, London.

Cath Kidston has teased the return on Instagram with images of the hoardings branded with its familiar florals.

In the post, it said: “Why yes. Yes, you guessed right.”

Topshop

Topshop could be making a dramatic comeback to the British high street in a welcome boost for fashion-lovers who mourned its loss.

Earlier this month ASOS announced plans to sell a 75% stake in the brand to Bestseller, a Danish retail group that owns Jack & Jones.

Bestseller, which is also ASOS’s largest investor, has around 2,800 retail stores in more than 30 countries.

Asos had bought Topshop out of administration for £265million in 2021.

As part of the £118million joint venture deal with Bestseller, ASOS will be relaunching Topshop.com as a standalone website.

However, in news that will thrill millennial shoppers, ASOS’s boss also suggested a return to bricks and mortar shops .

Ramos Calamonte said: “It is very early to say that there will be physical stores, but there is no question that they [Bestseller] have a big present presence on the high street.

“We think that they have a lot of potential.”

Industry rumours have suggested they have already started scoping out potential sites for Topshop’s revival, including London’s famous Carnaby Street.

Toys R Us

Toys R Us’ return to the UK high street has been been warmly welcomed by delighted fans.

Following a rapid roll out of concessions in the last year the iconic 90s toys retailer has announced it will launch in 23 more shops before Christmas.

The new stores are not standalone sites, but are “shop-in-shops” located inside WHSmith stores across the country.

Toys R Us was founded in 1957 by American businessman Charles P Lazarus.

It grew to 100 stores across the UK, but collapsed in 2018 and closed all branches.

Plans for a relaunch were announced in in October 2021 and the first store to open in a WHSmith branch was in York (Monks Cross retail park) on June 10 last year.

Managing director of WHSmith High Street Sean Toal said: “Nearly 40 years ago, Toys R Us first came to the UK, and we take great pride in being the steward of this much-loved brand in the UK.

“We’ve had queues around the block for many openings in the last year which tells you just how much people are loving seeing Toys R Us back again.”

M&Co

Fashion retailer M&Co closed all of its stores after collapsing into administration in 2022, but has now announced it will return to the high street.

The new store in Newton Mearns, Scotland, will be opening where a previous store was located before the brand fell into administration.

The store opening follows the troubled brand’s acquisition by AK Retail Holdings in May 2023.

The new store will be opening where a previous store was located before going into administration.

Sandra McPherson, head of retail for M&Co stores, said: “We are thrilled to welcome back our loyal customers in-store.

“This expansion symbolises our commitment to bringing stores back to the high street and connecting with customers.”

M&Co fell into administration in December 2022.

Fellow retailer Yours Clothing bought the M&Co brand and intellectual property the following year.

Wilko

Wilko is back on the high street having closed 400 stores in 2023 after going into administration.

Brits were heartbroken when beloved Wilko announced it would be closing all of its shops back in October last year.

However, a glimmer of hope was given when the brand name was scooped up by The Range, in a £5million deal – meaning that the name would live on.

Customers were overjoyed after learning the store was being relaunched online, and even more so when in a surprising turn of events, physical branches started to open up again.

Locations have since popped up Plymouth, Exeter, Luton, St Albans and Rotherham and its roll out is spreading across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The stores offer customers all the essentials across home and garden, as well as the usual value Wilko own-brand products, alongside popular named brands.

Chris Dawson, owner of Wilko, is said to be targeting 300 stores over the next five years, and said that all the new shops so far are making a profit.

Paperchase

In October 2023, Paperchase also made a return after closing all of its 134 shops and concessions earlier in the year.

Fans of the brand were devastated when the retailer disappeared from the high street in April 2023.

It had collapsed three months earlier and failed to find a buyer for the business.

Doors were shut on a total of 106 standalone shops, and 28 concessions within Next and Selfridges stores.

However, supermarket giant Tesco later stepped in and bought the rights to the brand and then went on to launch it in some of its stores.

A total of 261 Tesco stores now stock Paperchase products – see the full list here.

Ted Baker

Ted Baker is to operate as an online shop following its collapse.

Ted Baker fell into administration in March when a deal collapsed between its American owners, Authentic Brands, and a Dutch operating partner which was meant to run the store operations.

Its final UK high street shops shut their doors in August and its original website stopped accepting orders.

But later that month US-based Authentic Brand Group, said it had secured a deal with a new business partner United Legwear & Apparel Co.

They will now run the brand’s online platform in the UK and Europe.

We wait to see if it will follow others in returning to the high street.

What is happening to the British high street?

The news comes amid a challenging time for the whole of the UK’s retail sector.

High inflation coupled with a squeeze on consumers’ finances has meant people have less money to spend in the shops.

Also the rising popularity in online shopping has meant people are favouring digital ordering over visiting a physical store.

Unseasonably wet weather has also deterred shoppers from hitting the high street.

This ongoing issue has seen brands such as Paperchase, and The Body Shop.

Why are retailers closing stores?

RETAILERS have been feeling the squeeze since the pandemic, while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to the soaring cost of living crisis.

High energy costs and a move to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll, and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.

The high street has seen a whole raft of closures over the past year, and more are coming.

The number of jobs lost in British retail dropped last year, but 120,000 people still lost their employment, figures have suggested.

Figures from the Centre for Retail Research revealed that 10,494 shops closed for the last time during 2023, and 119,405 jobs were lost in the sector.

It was fewer shops than had been lost for several years, and a reduction from 151,641 jobs lost in 2022.

The centre’s director, Professor Joshua Bamfield, said the improvement is “less bad” than good.

Although there were some big-name losses from the high street, including Wilko, many large companies had already gone bust before 2022, the centre said, such as Topshop owner Arcadia, Jessops and Debenhams.

“The cost-of-living crisis, inflation and increases in interest rates have led many consumers to tighten their belts, reducing retail spend,” Prof Bamfield said.

“Retailers themselves have suffered increasing energy and occupancy costs, staff shortages and falling demand that have made rebuilding profits after extensive store closures during the pandemic exceptionally difficult.”

Alongside Wilko, which employed around 12,000 people when it collapsed, 2023’s biggest failures included Paperchase, Cath Kidston, Planet Organic and Tile Giant.

The Centre for Retail Research said most stores were closed because companies were trying to reorganise and cut costs rather than the business failing.

However, experts have warned there will likely be more failures this year as consumers keep their belts tight and borrowing costs soar for businesses.

The Body Shop and Ted Baker are the biggest names to have already collapsed into administration this year.
