Hollyoaks’ Jennifer Metcalfe inundated by fans reaching out with cancer symptoms after heartbreaking storyline

HOLLYOAKS actress Jennifer Metcalfe has confessed that she has been inundated with messages from other cancer sufferers in the wake of her heartbreaking storyline.

In the Channel 4 soap, her character Mercedes McQueen was left devastated to learn that she was suffering from bowel cancer.

She revealed she had been flooded with support from fans[/caption]

Scenes have shown Mercedes bravely fighting the disease and now Jennifer has admitted that the support she had received from the public amid the delicate plot has been incredible.

Jennifer spoke out about the story and how it had affected her at the Inside Soap Awards.

She exclusively told The Sun: “I’ve heard from a lot of people who have gone through similar things to what Mercedes is going through and having that direct contact with them and how they’ve said how much it has helped them and raised awareness around bowel cancer has just been overwhelming.

“I’ve sat there for hours on a nighttime, just responding to everyone, we have been voice noting between us and it has just had a powerful impact.”

Jen admitted that her followers had also been reaching out to share their own symptoms with the star having watched what Mercedes has gone through on-screens.

In response, the star said: “I’m no nurse or doctor but it does just feel massive to know I’ve had that impact.

“I will sit there and chat to anyone about if they have symptoms or where they need to go to get tested or if they are experiencing changes.”

Amidst her current battle, Jennifer admitted that she was hoping that Mercedes could finally find love amid her ongoing health turmoil.

She added: “It would be nice if she could find love at her lowest.

“I think she has such a big bravado all the time and she slaps on her red lipstick and goes out and gets what she wants.

“I think at a time to see her so vulnerable, it would be nice to see the pure love she could find.

“Knowing Mercedes, it will be round the corner somewhere!”

When the storyline was revealed last month, Jennifer told of her real-life heartbreaking connection to the disease.

It is the same disease that claimed her beloved dad Colin’s life when she was just 15.

Jen had the story broached with her by new Hollyoaks boss Hannah Cheers at a restaurant in Cheshire where they both live.

After a three hour deep discussion of the inspiration behind the story – Hannah’s dear friend Sophie’s battle with cancer – and Jen’s history, the pair hit the town to blow off some steam.

Jen previously told The Sun: “So when Hannah said that I just thought, yes, challenge me right up. It’s a time when I wanted to be challenged, the show needed to be, well we had massive challenges anyway, let’s throw some more in there.

“And I just sort of lent into it. Did you speak to other people who have gone through with cancer? I lived through it with my dad at such an early age. Things have moved on and changed from then, like the treatments and stuff.

“But I felt like I know everything pretty much first hand. We have been working about Bowel Cancer UK, they answered any questions that I had. They sent me case studies of women in very similar situations. Hannah, one of her best friends, went through it and we spoke at length about that.”

Energy price cap calculator reveals how much YOUR bill will rise this winter

AN online calculator can reveal exactly how much your bills will increase by this winter following today’s energy price cap rise.

Bills are set to increase for millions of households after energy regulator Ofgem increased the maximum price firms can charge consumers for energy.

PA
Energy costs are set to increase for millions of households from today[/caption]

The energy price cap has risen from £1,568 a year to £1,717 from today, affecting millions of customers on standard variable tariffs.

The average household paying by direct debt for dual fuel can expect to see their annual bill go up by about £149 annually, or around £12 a month – a 10% increase.

But bear in mind the exact amount you pay could be higher or lower than this depending on your usage and the tariff you are on.

To help consumers find out exactly what they’ll be paying in energy costs this winter AI household money-saver Nous.co has created an online calculator.

As well as calculating your bills Nous.co can also help you find deals that might save you money as well as suggesting tips for reducing usage.

Nous.co co-founder and chief executive, Greg Marsh, said: “Lots of UK households will again be struggling with gas and electricity bills this winter, and some may even be forced to make the tough choice between heating and other essentials.

“It’s crucial to make sure you’re not overpaying for your bills. Fortunately – there are savings to be made if you’re smart about it.

“Simple things like adjusting your thermostat, monitoring your credit balance, taking regular meter readings and switching off unused appliances can help keep costs down.

“Most households can also save the better part of £150 on their energy bills, without committing to a fixed deal, plus hundreds more on their mobile and broadband by switching providers”

You can find Nous.co’s calculator here.

Ofgem estimates around 29million households on standard variable tariffs will be affected by the increased price cap.

The increases set out by the regulator apply to average-use households, but this can vary considerably.

That’s because those figures are calculated assuming that a typical household uses 2,900 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas across a 12-month period.

If you use more than this the price will be higher as it is the unit cost that is capped not the overall amount billed.

So from today the price a supplier can charge for gas has risen from 5.48p per kWh, to 6.24p.

The price of electricity has also risen from 22.36p per kWh to 24.50p.

Meanwhile, standing charges, which cover things like maintaining the network and operational costs, have risen to 31.66p from 31.41p a day for gas and from 60.12p to 60.99p for electricity.

The way you pay for energy can also impact how much you pay and the £1,717 price cap applies specifically to those who pay by direct debit.

For those on prepayment meters the cap is £1,669 for an average household and it stands at £1,829 for those paying on receipt of bills.

If you’re on a fixed tariff there will be no change to your bill, as you’ve locked in the price for a set period.

If you haven’t already it’s important to take and submit a meter reading today to ensure you pay the lower rate for energy usage up until the point the price is increased.

If you don’t do this, you will be given an estimated bill which means some of your energy usage before October 1 could be charged at the new higher rate.

If you have a smart meter, you don’t need to take a reading as information is automatically sent to your supplier.

Despite the price cap rise, average bills remain considerably lower than during the peak of the energy crisis, which was fuelled by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The war caused a spike in an already turbulent wholesale energy market, driving up costs for suppliers and customers.

The new cap is £117 – 6% – cheaper compared to the same period last year when it stood at £1,834.

Before the energy price shock a standard annual bill was £1,084.

The energy price cap is adjusted every three months to reflect changes in underlying costs.

The price cap for January 1 to 31 March 2025, will be published on November 25.

If you’re worried about costs this winter MoneySavingExpert.com’s Martin Lewis has revealed how households can save money on their energy bills.

What energy bill help is available?

THERE'S a number of different ways to get help paying your energy bills if you're struggling to get by.

If you fall into debt, you can always approach your supplier to see if they can put you on a repayment plan before putting you on a prepayment meter.

This involves paying off what you owe in instalments over a set period.

If your supplier offers you a repayment plan you don’t think you can afford, speak to them again to see if you can negotiate a better deal.

Several energy firms have grant schemes available to customers struggling to cover their bills.

But eligibility criteria varies depending on the supplier and the amount you can get depends on your financial circumstances.

For example, British Gas or Scottish Gas customers struggling to pay their energy bills can get grants worth up to £2,000.

British Gas also offers help via its British Gas Energy Trust and Individuals Family Fund.

You don’t need to be a British Gas customer to apply for the second fund.

EDF, E.ON, Octopus Energy and Scottish Power all offer grants to struggling customers too.

Thousands of vulnerable households are missing out on extra help and protections by not signing up to the Priority Services Register (PSR).

The service helps support vulnerable households, such as those who are elderly or ill, and some of the perks include being given advance warning of blackouts, free gas safety checks and extra support if you’re struggling.

Get in touch with your energy firm to see if you can apply.

I left miserable life to live on paradise island – I’ve almost halved my living costs & I’m ten mins from the beach

ONE woman made the move to a paradise island where she managed to halve her living costs while living 10 minutes away from the beach.

Mum-of-three Tiffany Grant, 33, swapped her North Carolina lifestyle for island bliss in Jamaica where she lives happily without hot water.

The HR specialist and businesswoman moved in May after falling in love with the country in 2021 when she visited while pregnant with her third child.

She told CNBC: “I fell in love with everything about it: sights, smells, weather, people, food. I didn’t want to leave”.

She was swayed by the sense of community, fresh fruit, chance for her kids to play outside and the unprocessed food often cooked in the wild.

Despite living on the cliff side of the town of Negril – one of the most expensive areas – she only spends around $1,900 a month to maintain her lifestyle.

This total compares to a whopping $3,000 for the same things back home. It goes towards rent, utilities, childcare, food, school fees and home maintenance.

She likes to feast on the “incredible” and “not ultra-processed” produce, ranging from fresh fish to Jamaican patties – widely available from street vendors.

Tiffany explained that many locals engage in bush cooking – a natural method of preparing food outside.

Her three-bed home with a garden boasting mango and moringa trees is just a 10 minute drive from the beach.

Other fruits grown in her idyllic garden include local fruits naseberry, and ackee and she enjoys the “incredible scenery” when working from home.

Tiffany says the slower pace of life compared to the US means her neighbours in Jamaica – her dad’s homeland – check up on her more regularly.

She said: ” We don’t have hot water, which I surprisingly don’t miss. We wash our clothes by hand and hang them out on the line. I love it.

“This is what life was like for my grandparents and their parents, and now we get to be a part of it.”

The mum moved over with her two youngest kids, aged one and 10 – letting her eldest son complete high school in the US.

She likes that her children get to play outside in nature all day rather than being glued to their screens like they would back home.

Her favourite restaurant – where she can jump off the cliffs into the ocean – is just a two minute walk away.

Tiffany enjoys nighttime crab hunting at the beach and fishing without rods with her family – unimaginable in her native USA.

Fans stunned as Arne Slot ‘cooks’ Man Utd with savage statement after Red Devils’ Tottenham humiliation

ARNE SLOT has heaped more misery on Manchester United by claiming they are not a “top team”.

The Dutch coach, 46, led his Liverpool side to a comfortable 3-0 win at Old Trafford last month.

And on Sunday that feat was replicated by Tottenham as they demolished Erik ten Hag’s men in front of a frustrated set of Red Devils supporters.

Liverpool sit top of the Premier League table after picking up 16 points from their opening six games under Slot.

Yet the former Feyenoord boss has claimed his side are yet to face a “top league table team” – a passing shot at Man Utd who are languishing in the bottom half in 13th place.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Bologna on Wednesday, he said: “One of the reasons why we can compete is because we have a lot of quality. I also see a lot of team cohesion in the team.

“If we score I also see the ones that don’t play are really happy with us scoring and winning. Those are two really positive things.

“But I also see things we definitely have to improve if we want to stay where we are with the fixture list that’s coming up.

“Like I said, every fixture is difficult in the Premier League but everybody tells me that a top league table team is a bit more difficult than a low league table team, which we can all understand and we haven’t faced one of them yet.

“So we have to do things better, but one of the reasons why we can stay up there is because we have a lot of players with a lot of individual quality.”

Slot’s comments have left football fans utterly stunned as they reacted to his jibe at Man Utd.

One said: “No way he just cooked Manchester United 😭😭😭😭.”

Another added: “He bodied that 13th placed club.”

A third replied: “Bro called United a small team 😭😭.”

And a fourth responded: “See the stray bullet thrown at Manchester United 😂.”
