Strictly made me breakdown in the shower fully clothed – my husband saved me from my lowest point, confesses Oti Mabuse

STRICTLY Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse has revealed how she became so consumed by working on the celebrity dance contest that she “wasn’t really in” her own marriage, and ended up breaking down in the shower fully clothed.

Opening up to relationship coach Paul Carrick Brunson on his podcast We Need To Talk, Oti describes physically and emotionally detaching from her husband, Romanian dancer Marius Lepure, when she joined the hit BBC1 show, a year after they married in 2014.

Oti described Strictly as a “lifestyle choice”[/caption]

She says: “Strictly is not a TV show. It’s a lifestyle choice. It is all you think about 24/7. It’s all you do. You’re on tour, you’re doing other Strictly-associated shows. You’re not really 100% in the marriage, because this is gold. The trophy is handmade, by the way, and you’re fixated on it.

“[During Strictly]. I didn’t communicate with my friends, I didn’t communicate with my family, I didn’t communicate with my husband. It was just this one goal that I wanted to achieve so, so, so, so so much.”

The eight times Latin dance champion, who has a degree in civil engineering, adds: “It was a lot about me in those years.”

Oti met Marius, 42, in 2012 at a dance trial in Nuremberg, Germany – where he was also running a dance school – after she travelled from her home in Pretoria, South Africa, in search of a new professional dance partner.

Speaking to Celebs Go Dating and Married At First Sight love guru Paul, Oti recalls how Marius declared his love for her within a week of meeting, then proposed after two years. The couple worked together on the 2015 series of Let’s Dance, the German take on Strictly Come Dancing, before conducting a long distance relationship after Oti relocated to London to join the UK show.

Appearing alongside his wife on the podcast, which goes live tonight [Tuesday] at 6pm, Marius says he understood first-hand what the job required for her to win.

Recalling a time he flew into London Stansted from Germany before hiring a car and making a 500-mile round trip to Blackpool for the briefest of reunions with Oti, Marius said:  “We were literally together for three or four hours and she was like, ‘I have to sleep, I’m sorry’ and I was ‘Okay, let’s just cuddle for a few hours’ and that was it.

“I’m in that business. I knew what it takes to be a successful dancer and choreographer in a show like that, so it was nothing new. But obviously it’s tough and it hurts and it’s not the easiest time but you see the end of the tunnel”

Ultimately, Oti’s hard work paid off.

In 2019 she finished in first place alongside ex Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher before securing victory again one series later with comedian Bill Bailey – the first-ever pro dancer to lift the coveted Glitterball trophy two years consecutively.

Prior to that, Oti says she had been at her “lowest” ebb while partnering “a celeb who I just couldn’t get to love the job as much as I wanted” and who she says she “couldn’t teach”

One evening after rehearsals, Marius returned home to find his wife fully clothed, crumpled and breaking her heart on the floor of the shower.

“It was the lowest moment,” Oti recalls.

Strictly Curse - The Lowdown

STRICTLY Come Dancing's latest series has already been hit by rumours of a BBC show 'curse' - yet what is it?

A host of Strictly Come Dancing stars have been struck by the Strictly Curse during the past two decades.

This is where celebrities who may or may not be attached in the outside world become more than friends with their professional partners.

A total of 20 relationships are said to have been impacted so far over the show’s 20 years.

It has seen relationships crumble with dance floor romances and punishing rehearsal schedules to blame.

This includes the partnerships of Louise and Jamie Redknapp as well as Kevin Clifton and Karen Hauer.

Controversially, Judge Craig Revel Horwood once said of the curse: “I think of it as a blessing, to be honest. One person is married, the other one had a girlfriend but my point in this entire thing is: if you come on Strictly, sometimes you are in a relationship that is not working anyway.

“There has to be something wrong in your relationship before it all goes awry.”

Series one winner Brendan Cole left his fiancé, fellow Strictly professional Camilla Dallerup, during filming for the very first series in spring 2004.

Brendan was said to have fallen for his celebrity partner and inaugural winner Natasha Kaplinsky, although the duo didn’t confirm they were romantically involved.

“In my head, I felt, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not good enough in my job’. All of this pressure that I [had] – I’m representing black women. I’m representing African women. I stand for so much – if I can’t get this job done, I’m not good enough. I don’t deserve to be here’.

“[Marius] came in, he got in the shower, fully clothed, he picked me up, and he just hugged me and held me. He said, ‘It’s just a job. You have family, you have friends, you have me and you have food’.

“In that moment, I realised that no matter how much I have this career – and I love the show and everything it encompasses – at the end of the day, I get to go home to the things that make me more. It is not who I am, it’s what I do.”

Both big fans of mentoring, Oti and Marius promptly booked onto a Tony Robbins programme, where participants examine identity, core emotions, intimate relationships and what drives their actions. The American self help legend has worked with everyone from Donald Trump and Bill Clinton to Oprah and the Kardashians.

“We needed to rebuild our priorities – or my priorities,” says Oti. “[At the Tony Robbins conference] they asked us what our priorities were, and how you list them and how your partner lists them. My priorities [were] work, career and then love and his were love, work and career, and we had to switch that out. We needed to completely reorder that.”

Soon after, Oti’s mindset – and marriage – had transformed.

Confirming that love is now “one hundred per cent” her top priority, she says: “It took [until] the next series… for me to fall in love with the job again in a completely different way, to fall in love with my husband again in a completely different way, to be more communicative with my friends and my family.

“That was the beginning of the change. And then I crushed it! There was no shower crying anymore. Just multiple trophies!”

Oti quit Strictly in 2022 after seven years and went on to become a judge on Dancing On Ice plus host her own dating show Romeo & Due before competing in the latest series of Great Celebrity Bake Off in aid of Stand Up to Cancer.

But it’s off screen where her biggest role has truly begun. Last November, two months prematurely, she and Marius welcomed their first child, a baby girl who they have never publicly named.

Speaking about her 16-hour birth at London’s University College Hospital before their daughter spent six weeks in the intensive-care neonatal unit, Oti explains: “It was over Christmas and it felt like the whole nation was so happy. I was like, ‘This is the worst point of my life, ever.”

I felt, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not good enough in my job’

Oti Mabuse

Their baby was finally allowed home on Christmas Eve and since falling into the groove of motherhood, Oti has realised she now regrets waiting so long to have a baby.

To Brunson’s question of what she would have done differently if she could rewind time and relive her career, she replies: “I would have had my daughter earlier. I’m not old. I’m 34, but I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I wish I had more time. I wish I had done this earlier.

“We’ve both always wanted children. We come from big families but because of the dancing, my body is how I pay for the bills so we needed to have the career to be done and over with it to allow ourselves to be like, ‘this is the right time for me’. I didn’t want anything else but to have a family.”

According to Oti, she and Marius are “still figuring out” how to balance work, parenting and life, which she admits is the biggest challenge to their marriage, especially with the absence of support from foreign-based family, including Oti’s Strictly judge sister Motsi, who lives lives near Frankfurt, Germany with her husband and young daughter.

“We are doing it, just us. We don’t have extra help. We don’t have any family here. It’s just us. So time is the challenge of us-time, his own time, work time, family time, baby time and that can create, sometimes, conflicts.”

Yet alongside the grit, determination and resilience that runs through Oti’s veins, her marriage to Marius is evidently one of the strongest and as parents, she speaks warmly of the fact they take on an equal share of responsibilities, which allows them to bring the best of themselves to the table professionally and personally.

“If I’m working, if I’m promoting our tour [Viva Carnival] and I have a week of back-to-back work, he can take the baby and travel the world, and I’ll still be okay with that,” says Oti. “We were both in this together and it’s great.”

Growing up

Jonathan is the son of the bodybuilder, William De La Rosa.

From Eastchester, New York, Jonathan was inspired by his dad to become the IFBB Pro bodybuilding champ he is today.

Born May 29, 1984, Jonathan began training from a young age after he picked up an injury playing football in high school.

Jonathan lost a lot of strength due to inactivity during his recovery period, and he found bodybuilding was a way to get back the weight and strength he had lost.

Once his body started to change he “knew I wanted to keep doing it and try to make that my new sport”.

In the genes

Jonathan competed alongside his dad William De La Rosa, at the Eastern USA Championships 2007.

Jonathan told Mr Muscle magazine: “We actually competed together at the ’07 Eastern USA.

“Preparing together and keeping each other motivated to be our best was an amazing experience that not many sons ever get to share with their pop.

“For that I’m truly grateful.”

Mr Olympia hopeful

The 197lb bodybuilder won the Tampa Pro over a strong challenge presented by the Chicago Pro champ, Mohamed Foda in August 2024.

This win did not only established him as a formidable presence in the bodybuilding community, but also secured his place to compete in the 2024 Mr Olympia competitions.

The 2024 Olympia 60th anniversary will take place on October 10-13, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Olympia is regarded as one of the biggest and most prestigious events in the bodybuilding calendar.

Upon qualifying for Mr Olympia, his wife Taylor boasted her support on Instagram saying: “No one deserved this more, I prayed for this day, for this exact moment.

“God answered my prayers. I am so proud of you, I knew you would get back to the Olympia stage.

“You did it baby! I love you so much & I am HONORED. I AM GRATEFUL. I AM BLESSED to be apart of this journey with you.”

This will be the third time Jonathan has qualified and competed at the Mr Olympia bodybuilding event.

When he first competed in 2014, he placed 14th.

And in 2019, after going through what he described as a “tough divorce” with his first wife, he took 12th place.

The Mr Olympia qualifier is trained by coach Patrick Tuor who has trained many top-level bodybuilding competitors, including Iain Valliere.

Ruth often shares videos of her cooking and many fans took to the comments to praise her latest dish.

But some were less impressed, with one writing: “Ruth is better than this ridiculous advertising. Sad to watch.”

Presenter Ruth hit back: “Feel free to unfollow if this is making you sad.”

She was recently forced to explain to followers why she is still wearing her wedding ring despite her shock split from husband Eamonn Holmes earlier this year.

In another clip – this time showing Ruth preparing a green juice – one follower questioned why she hadn’t removed the ring.

To which she replied: “Because I am still married.”

And Ruth was also quick to fire back when she was branded a “show off” after taking her followers on a day out for some posh pampering.

Last month she told followers how her hairdresser’s Notting Hill salon was being refurbished so her hair appointment was instead taking place at Claridge’s Hotel.

Some fans were quick to blast her as a “total show off” and one added: “You are so lucky. Most people could not afford that.”

But Ruth quipped: “No luck… I’ve worked hard for everything I have.”

This week Ruth returned to This Morning for the first time since her split from Eamonn.

The former couple co-presented the show from 2006 until 2021 when they were replaced by Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary.

Ruth and Eamonn's relationship timeline

Before the shock split announcement, Ruth and Eamonn seemed like one of the strongest couples on UK TV – even with their signature bickering style.

Here’s how their romance played out…

1997 – The couple first meet after being introduced by mutual friends, two years after Eamonn splits from his first wife, Gabrielle, with whom he has three children.

1997-2002 – To be respectful to Gabrielle, the couple kept their relationship out of the limelight. Ruth told Daily Mail: “I thought it spoke volumes about the sort of man he was, the sort of father he was and the integrity he had. It made me love him more, not less.”

2002 – Ruth and Eamonn welcome their son, Jack, to the family.

2005 – Eamonn finalises his divorce with Gabrielle.

2006 – The pair begin to host Friday episodes of This Morning together.

2010 – Eamonn proposes to Ruth while at the Cheltenham Races, after asking Ruth’s mother for her hand.

June 2010 – Eamonn and Ruth marry at Elvetham Hall, Hampshire.

2016 – Eamonn undergoes a double hip replacement in the first of many health battles.

June 2019 – On This Morning, Ruth and Eamonn say the secret to their happy marriage. Eamonn credits “compromise, consideration and lots of conjugal,” while Ruth said it was “laughter and an equal marriage”.

November 2020 – Ruth and Eamonn are replaced on their regular Friday slot by Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary in a ‘show shake-up’.

December 2021 – After a year of being moved to the bank holiday presenting slot, both Eamonn and Ruth left This Morning.

January 2022 – Eamonn debuted on GB News, while Ruth stayed with ITV in her long-standing role on Loose Women.

September 2022 – Eamonn undergoes spinal surgery after years of back issues including a trapped sciatic nerve.

November 2022 – Eamonn falls down the stairs of his Surrey home with Ruth and breaks his shoulder, requiring a new operation.

September 2023 – Eamonn has a spine and neck stretching procedure as part of his year-long recovery.

May 2024 – Ruth and Eamonn announce they have split after 14 years of marriage and a 27-year relationship.

September 2024 – Eamonn was spotted on a luxury holiday in Barcelona with his new girlfriend Katie Alexander. Ruth calls in a ‘fierce’ divorce lawyer.
