Newcastle 1 Wimbledon 0: Chelsea learn Carabao Cup opponents as Toon see off visitors after pitch saw fixture postponed

NEWCASTLE saw off a spirited effort from League Two AFC Wimbledon to advance in the Carabao Cup.

A first-half penalty from Fabian Schar was enough to send Toon through to a last-16 clash with Chelsea.

The match had been re-arranged following a SINKHOLE opening up at Wimbledon’s ground.

Eddie Howe opted for a front three of Miguel Almiron, William Osula, and Harvey Barnes at St James Park.

But a stubborn Dons defence kept the Premier League stars at bay for much of the first 45 minutes.

Toon’s domination on the ball eventually paid off as Almiron was hauled down in the box.

Schar stepped up, smashing the penalty past Dons stopper Owen Goodman.

Bruno Guimaraes was introduced by Howe after the break as the Magpies looked to make the tie safe.

However, several players were guilty of missing a plethora of chances to put the game to bed.

Bruno, Sean Longstaff, and Joe Willock were all denied by heroic last-ditch blocks.

Wimbledon held firm for the remainder of the contest, despite failing to register a shot on goal.

But it was Newcastle who are through to face the Blues in a rematch of last year’s quarter final.

I was sitting eating a pizza – moments later I was running for my life as 180 Iranian missiles rained down over Israel

I’D just ordered a coffee in a roadside cafe on my way back from Israel’s northern war zone when the alert flashed up on my phone.

It read: “Iran is preparing an imminent ballistic missile attack against Israel. Please take cover as soon as possible.”

Most missiles were intercepted by Israeli anti-air defences, reports said[/caption]

I was sitting in a pizza restaurant in a much-rocketed area north of the coastal port of Haifa when the warning pinged in my pocket.

Moments later I saw other diners picking up their phones as warnings reached them but was impressed by their stoicism as they carried on munching on their margaritas.

These were people who have endured daily rocket attacks from Hezbollah for nearly a year but even they began to shuffle in their seats as more warnings appeared on their mobile security apps.

This was clearly something much bigger than the daily Hezbollah barrage from the north.

And moments later we were jammed in the door as it was confirmed that more than a hundred Iranian ballistic missiles flying at 14 times the speed of sound were on their way.

This was confirmed to be only the first of several waves of attacks heading out way.

We ran across the road into a concrete shelter where English speakers told me to expect to be stuck there for some time as I tapped out my story using the glow of my laptop screen.

Then moments later the first booms split the air high above as Iron Dome interceptors engaged the incoming rockets.

I – probably very foolishly – took a sneak peek into the sky outside and watched trails of red rockets racing up to meet the missiles in a spectacular but potentially deadly firework display.

It comes as…

But scary spectaculars like this have become a way of life for the people of northern Israel – who clearly trust the boffins whose rocket wizardry had saved their lives yet again.

It remained unclear whether Iran’s terror masters had inflicted death or destruction as they attempted to decimate their hated enemy.

And this may be just the first of many terrifying tests for the people of Israel, their enemies and the millions caught in the crossfire as the threat of a catastrophic war looms.

Man United Women’s boss says WSL game postponement is ‘right decision’ whilst sympathising with fans

MARC SKINNER insists postponing Chelsea’s WSL clash with Manchester United was the right move in terms of player welfare.

However the Red Devils chief also sympathised with fans who planned to attend the match with United thought to have sold all their away tickets.

Skinner, whose team host Liverpool tomorrow in a Women’s League Cup group stage game, was reflecting on his side’s top-flight away duel with the Blues being temporarily shelved.

The highly anticipated top-flight fixture was due to take place on Sunday 6 October, but was postponed by the Women’s Professional League Limited last Sunday.

The decision was motivated by Chelsea’s opening Women’s Champions League group game being pencilled in two nights later, with the team having 48 hours between the duels.

And the WPLL (previously known as NewCo), which runs the top two tiers of the women’s domestic game, stated they were putting “player welfare first”.

This follows concern across the sport, particularly from elite footballers themselves, around match congestion, its effect on players’ loads and the potential for increased risk of injury.

Man United boss Skinner said: “For me most importantly it’s affected the fans, which is something we clearly don’t want to happen.

“But I think from a playing perspective, for both Chelsea welfare and our welfare players-wise, it’s the right decision, because the game is not going to be moved from the Champions League.

“We don’t want any more injuries. We’ve seen Everton potentially take an injury again at the weekend.

“We don’t want that. So I think from a player welfare (perspective), it’s the right thing.”

According to BBC Sport the WPLL had asked that no English sides had their Women’s Champions Leagues arranged for Tuesday 8 October. However the organisation’s request was unsuccessful

And Uefa are said to have made their schedule for tournament fixtures available to clubs over a year ago.

Following the WSL game postponement ahead of their side’s first European match this term, a Blues fan association said the club had to protect its players.

The Chelsea Women’s Supporters Group also sympathised with fans who had forked out on travel and hotel bookings ahead of the Kingsmeadow clash.

In a post shared via its X account, the Group wrote: “We feel for all the supporters who have lost money on transport and hotels.

“It shouldn’t have got to this situation.”

The Manchester United Women’s Supporters Club says it is currently “in dialogue in regard to next course of action” with Red Devils officials in regard to costs incurred by away fans.

Skinner said: “Wherever we fit the game in, let’s make sure it’s accessible to the fans and that they are well looked-after. That’s the most important thing.

“I think it was sold out, our end, the away end. So we just need to make sure it favours them as well, I think that’s really key.

“But the reality is, for the quick turnaround, which would have been for us or for Chelsea.

“It would have put the players at risk and I don’t think we need to do that this early in the season.”

United’s League Cup duel with Liverpool tomorrow will see them begin their quest to win the contest a season on from lifting the Women’s FA Cup for the first time.

And Skinner says the competition is a top priority for the Red Devils who missed out on a knockout spot last season.

This was due to their group stage rival Aston Villa being docked points which were awarded to Sunderland.

The Man United boss added: “I felt last year, we were very, very unfortunate to not progress to the knockout stages.

Liverpool have drawn their first two WSL games this season ahead of their League Cup group stage duel with Man United[/caption]

“Not only did we have a very difficult group, we were then unfortunate that a decision is made elsewhere that affects us and we can’t go through.

“It’s a priority for us, it’s an opportunity to win a cup, but it’s also an opportunity for players to show and claim their stake for starting.

“We need a competitive game, a competitive team, a competitive environment.”

The post revealed that Tesco’s branch in Wath Upon Dearne is selling Status’ 12-inch Desk Fan for just £5.85.

The fan’s price was slashed by a whopping 70 per cent after the major retail chain moved the item to its reduced-to-clear section.

Shoppers can also bag Status’ 31-inch Tower Fan, scanning at Tesco’s tills for just £9.40,

It’s unclear what the original price of the tower fan was, but similar models on the supermarket’s website cost nearly £40.

Alternatively, Tesco shoppers can buy Status’ 16-inch Pedestal Fan for £6.60 after it too was moved to the reduced-to-clear section.

Similar models of the 16-inch fan cost around £25 from the popular supermarket chain, so those opting for Status’ fans will save £18.40.

The savvy shopper’s post in the bargain Facebook group garnered hundreds of likes and comments from fellow shoppers eager to grab the summer essential.

“Hope they have some left,” wrote one user.

Another commented: “Cheers pal just what I need.”

While a third, who tagged their friend, added: “If ur in at lunch have a nosey.”

Despite their eagerness, shoppers should be aware that not all of Tesco’s branches will stock these items in the reduced-to-clear section.

It’s always worth phoning ahead to your local store to check how many they have available.

As always, make sure to have a shop around before you commit to a purchase to make sure you’re always getting the best deal.

To find your nearest store head over to the Tesco website.

It follows a lucky Tesco shopper who managed to nab the “bargain” of their life when they found a pair of kids’ sports shoes priced at just 4p.

The shockingly low price sent social media into a frenzy with many wondering how shoes were so cheap.

The pair of B Sports Shoes normally costs £13 but its price had been reduced by more than 99%.

A post of the staggering deal shared on Facebook amassed countless shocked reactions.

The post stated: “Bargain of [my] life, Tesco kids School trainers for 4p, original price £13.00.”

Users were also quick to comment on the extraordinary offer.

One said: “Well done on your bargain!”

But many also shared insight into why the price was so low.

One sharp commenter claimed: “Item at 4p are old stock and meant to be removed from shelves.”

However, another said: “Shouldn’t have been sold.

“It’s meant to be for charity.”

Tesco often reduces prices to 4p on goods that are considered ‘old stock.’

How to bag a bargain

SUN Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to find a cut-price item and bag a bargain…

Sign up to loyalty schemes of the brands that you regularly shop with.

Big names regularly offer discounts or special lower prices for members, among other perks.

Sales are when you can pick up a real steal.

Retailers usually have periodic promotions that tie into payday at the end of the month or Bank Holiday weekends, so keep a lookout and shop when these deals are on.

Sign up to mailing lists and you’ll also be first to know of special offers. It can be worth following retailers on social media too.

When buying online, always do a search for money off codes or vouchers that you can use vouchercodes.co.uk and myvouchercodes.co.uk are just two sites that round up promotions by retailer.

Scanner apps are useful to have on your phone. Trolley.co.uk app has a scanner that you can use to compare prices on branded items when out shopping.

Bargain hunters can also use B&M’s scanner in the app to find discounts in-store before staff have marked them out.

And always check if you can get cashback before paying which in effect means you’ll get some of your money back or a discount on the item.
