Monty Don reveals key plants that needs to be pruned NOW to avoid being ruined this winter and never blooming again

MONTY Don has urged gardeners to prune a popular plant this October, to prevent it from getting damaged over the winter.

Summer may be well and truly over, but there are still plenty of jobs gardening fans can be getting on with, to protect their gardens from the harsh winter weather ahead.

Now is the perfect time to prune your roses, to ensure they bloom in spring[/caption]

Gardening legend Monty, 68, shared the important update to fans on his gardening blog.

Urging fans to tackle a major task, he said: “Prune climbing roses.

“Climbing roses flower on shoots grown the same spring so they can be pruned hard now.”

Pruning is essential to make sure that roses bloom next year, as it removes dead and dying branches, making way fro new growth in the spring

To prune your roses, simply cut back the old branches during the winter.

Monty advised: “Always use really sharp tools for pruning.

“Not only does it make life much easier but it also makes for much cleaner cuts and therefore causes less damage to the plant, sharp tools are also much safer.”

“Always use a tool that is operating within its capacity, so never strain.

“Use loppers for stems too thick for easy cutting with secateurs and a sharp saw for anything that strains loppers.”

The first thing you should do when pruning climbing roses, is remove any sign of damage.

The Gardener’s World presenter explained: “Start by removing any damaged or crossing growth or any very old wood which can be pruned right back to the ground.

“The main stems should be fanned out at an equidistance as horizontally as possible, tying them to wires or a trellis.

“Then all the side shoots growing from these main stems – which produced this year’s flowers – can be reduced to a short stub of a couple of leaves.”

October gardening jobs

The Sun’s Gardening Editor, Veronica Lorraine, has shared the jobs you need to tackle in October.

“It’s a good time to trim deciduous hedges – like box, yew, hawthorn, hornbean and beech – plus hedge trimmers are a great upper body workout!

Make leafmould – gather up all the fallen leaves and fill either bin bags or plastic carrier bags. Seal the top, stick a few small holes in the bag – and then store for a year or more. Free compost!

It’s unlikely you’ll get any more red tomatoes so have one final harvest and chuck the plants on the compost. See if you can get the green ones to ripen by putting in a drawer (some say with a banana). Also keep the seeds from a couple – and plant again next year if they went well.

Finish getting in your spring bulbs. Ideally you’d have done daffs and alliums, but tulips are better in the ground when the soil temperature gets a bit colder.

It’s good to leave some plant litter in the ground – it adds to the nutrients as it rots down, and provides shelter and food for insects. But remove the manky brown bits collapsing all over the lawn/winter structure.

Mulch – it not only suppresses weeds, but keeps the soil warm, improves water retention and adds a little winter duvet to your outside space.

October’s a good month for carrots, peas, asparagus, broad beans, and rhubarb.”

When pruning the roses, it is vital to cut just above a bud, that points in the direction you would like your rose to grow.

Monty added: “The effect should be a tracery of largely horizontal growth with pruned side-shoots running along their length.

“Finally make sure it is all tied firmly in to avoid winter damage.”

John Amos’ ex-wife Noel J. Mickelson: Good Times & Coming To America star’s marriage & divorce details

ICONIC actor John Amos, known for the 1970s sitcom Good Times, died recently aged 84.

During his successful life, the Coming To America star was married twice, first to camera-shy Noel J. Mickelson – here’s what we know about her.

Meet Noel J. Mickelson

Mickelson was born in Iowa and grew up to be a carpenter and equestrian.

Her daughter Shannon shared on Instagram that she was of “Danish & Ashkenazi Jewish” descent.

She and John met while attending college at Colorado State University when she was majoring in fine arts, which Shannon says was “love at first sight”.

As a child I didn’t know my parents were different colors. I only saw them as my parents – the two people who loved me. All I knew was their love

The lovebirds married in 1965 – two years before the Supreme Court’s landmark decision which rules against laws banning interracial marriage.

Their daughter Shannon spoke of their interracial marriage on social media, calling it “a tumultuous time in the world around them”.

She said: “I was born a year before my parents would be recognized as a legal couple in 16 states.

“As a child I didn’t know my parents were different colors. I only saw them as my parents – the two people who loved me. All I knew was their love.”

After they graduated, the couple moved to Amos’ home-place of New Jersey and began working as social workers.

Noel reportedly encouraged John’s dream of being a pro football player.

The actor then entered the Greenwich Village stand-up comedy scene before entering the entertainment sector – all with Mickelson by his side.

John said to The Hollywood Reporter: “Being an artist herself, she understood my reluctance to accept the 9-to-5 world.”

The pair’s first child, Shannon, was born in New Jersey in 1966 but they soon moved to Los Angeles when John booked TV commercials.

This soon turned into many sitcoms including his role as weatherman Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and James Evans Sr. on Good Times.

The Amos family then raised Shannon and their youngest child K.C. in Sylmar after he was born in 1970.

With Noel being an avid equestrian, the couple raised the kids on a property with horses.

Daughter Shannon was nine years old when her parents separated in 1975, and recalls Noel having “a nervous breakdown”.

Noel even had a restraining order against John, Hollywood Reporter claims.

Details of their divorce have never been shared publicly.

Noel J. Mickelson’s life after the divorce

Little was known of Noel’s life after the divorce, with her kids Shannon and K.C. sharing various pics on social media.

Daughter Shannon told The Hollywood Reporter that Noel remarried to a Disney special-effects engineer.

But, when living on a California ranch with her new husband, she experienced medical complications during a hysterectomy.

This tragically led to her becoming blind and a quadriplegic.

In 2014, K.C. posted a photo of himself and Shannon with a sadly unwell Noel.

Noel’s second husband cared for her until she sadly died in 2016.

The children have continued to keep her in their memories by posting various photos with heartwarming captions.

Sharon said in February this year on Instagram: “She was my rock, offering a safe space to be with my emotions. I miss the warmth of her embrace so much.”

Taylor Swift’s guitar up for sale on eBay – despite being smashed to pieces in viral video

TAYLOR Swift’s guitar has gone up for sale on eBay, despite being smashed to pieces just days ago.

The instrument, which gained viral attention this week after being battered by its buyer, is now up for auction online.

It’s now up for auction online[/caption]

Initially purchased at a charity auction for $4,000, the buyer, 67-year-old Gary Estes, attacked it with a hammer, reportedly in protest of the singer’s political stance.

The incident occurred at the Ellis County WildGame Dinner in Waxahachie, Texas, and was captured on video, sparking widespread social media attention.

The listing describes the piece of memorabilia as being signed, claiming it was purchased at auction and subsequently damaged.

It is emphasised that proceeds from the sale will support local youth agricultural education programs.

The auction for the damaged guitar began with a $100 minimum bid, which had climbed to $2,600 by late Tuesday, with just under a week remaining.

When the guitar was first sold, a certificate of authenticity was provided, stating that it had been signed by Taylor, though it reportedly lacked the usual seal seen on such documents.

However, according to Variety, a source from her merchandising team later clarified that the guitar had not been signed by the singer and was not an official piece of her merchandise.

Despite this, photos from the listing appear to show an autograph.

The viral video showed Gary smashing the guitar as the crowd cheered.

Auctioneer Craig Meier encouraged him, saying, “Now take that and hang up that busted thing.”

In a later interview with NBC News, Gary explained that the stunt was intended as a joke, saying: “It was just a joke at an auction that we had to raise money for kids, right? And that’s all it was.”

Craig added: “It was a funny, light-hearted thing. I know maybe it seemed to be malicious, but everybody was laughing. There were people there, at the time, who joked around that he’s mad because he doesn’t know how to play the guitar.”

Though, he did acknowledge that there had been some political undertones, given Taylor’s endorsement of Kamala Harris over Donald Trump in the presidential election.

Rob Bartley, an attendee at the event, told The Independent: “A Taylor Swift guitar had sold at another event unrelated to this earlier in the year, so it wasn’t an unheard of type of item to auction.

“That said… when the man announced his intention to smash it the camera phones came out. It was unexpected, but not surprising. This part of Texas leans heavily conservative and the Biden/Harris administration isn’t held in high regard.

“A lot of the working class people that live around me feel that the administration gone from not working for us to working against us.”

TMZ previously reported that the guitar was donated prior to Taylor’s endorsement of Kamala, without intent for it to be destroyed.

The U.S. Sun revealed last month that Taylor was ready to endorse Harris once the blockbuster European leg of her Eras tour ended.

    PRESIDENTIAL PUSH

According to an insider, President Joe Biden’s camp desperately wanted her to rescue his faltering push for a second term before the Democrats pulled the plug on his campaign in July and pivoted to Harris.

But with Taylor, who backed Biden in 2020, enjoying some downtime before she started performing again in North America, she readily took the opportunity to post a message of endorsement on Instagram just moments after her contentious debate with Trump in Philadelphia.

“She felt she needed to speak out as the election process is getting more intense,” the well-placed source told us.

    “The time just felt right.”

The insider confirmed Taylor had spoken to Harris “a couple of times on the phone” lately and knows exactly how significant the build-up to polling day on November 5 is for every American.

“Taylor is very aware of the problems, issues, and struggles that many people go through in the country,” continued the source. “She thinks Kamala is the only option to help create a better society and America for everyone.”

    CALL TO ARMS

Her scathing takedown of Trump’s running mate JD Vance, who sparked outrage with his now infamous “childless cat ladies” jibe, spread like wildfire on social media less than an hour after the often fiery debate concluded.

Trump, who dubbed his performance “his best debate ever,” surprisingly repeated wild conspiracy theories about immigrants eating dogs and cats in Ohio, with Harris riling the 78-year-old about his criminal convictions handed down to him earlier this year.

Taylor has nailed her political allegiances to the mast during previous elections.

Who has Taylor Swift endorsed for the US presidential election?

Taylor Swift is gearing up to throw her support behind Kamala Harris and Tim Walz's campaign, a source exclusively disclosed to The U.S. Sun.

The pop superstar has been keeping fans guessing as to who she will endorse in the upcoming November election. But, now, The U.S Sun has learned Taylor will endorse Harris “4 to 6 weeks” before election day.

    Taylor Swift’s ties to Democrats:

    • The Eras superstars devoted Swifties fans have long speculated that Taylor will vote for Harris in the presidential election.
    • That assumption is based on the fact that Taylor endorsed Joe Biden in 2020.
    • In March, the star encouraged her millions of Instagram followers to have their say in the presidential primaries.
    • But it was a nonpartisan message, which urged fans to “vote the people who most represent YOU into power.”
    • In 2020, she lashed out at then-President Donald Trump, vowing to vote him out of office.
    • Before that, in 2018, Taylor publicly endorsed Democrat Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House in Tennessee.
    • At the time, Taylor called Bredesen’s Republican opponent, Marsha Blackburn, a “Trump in a wig.”

    INCREDIBLE INFLUENCE

But with the race becoming nail-bitingly close, and knowing the influence she has over her millions of fans, the time was right to make a stand against Trump’s push for a return to the Oval Office.

“It is very important for her to voice her opinion and show support for who she thinks will be best for the country, and she is very proud and excited for Kamala Harris to have the possibility to become the next president and that woman can be in this position,” said the source.

“Taylor is an artist that wants to be engaged socially, to speak about causes that she values a lot and that has a lot that she likes on Kamala Harris’s vision and perspectives for America.”

The Shake It Off star wrote to her 283 million followers on Instagram that she not only did she back Harris for the White House, but laid bare her anger at AI tools “falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site.”

“It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” she wrote.

“It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election.”
