Terrifying footage shows judge cowering under his desk as he’s shot dead by sheriff inside chambers

DISTURBING surveillance video shows the moment a judge cowered behind his desk before the town sheriff shot him to death in his own chambers.

Former Kentucky sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines, 43, could now face the death penalty for murdering District Judge Kevin Mullins in a shocking scene on September 19.

Prosecutors played the terrifying video clip of Stines allegedly opening fire on Mullins during the ex-sheriff’s preliminary court hearing on Tuesday in Letcher County, Kentucky, which is about 150 miles southeast of Lexington.

Mullins, 54, died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Stines surrendered to police after the shooting.

The footage, which has no audio, showed a man who cops identified as Stines pulling out a gun and pointing it at Mullins, who sat at his desk.

The judge appeared to fall to the floor and the gunman walked around the desk to fire at him while Mullins tried to take cover in the room’s corner. Stines shot the judge eight times.

Video from the hearing revealed that viewers in the courtroom sobbed and groaned as the clip played in court.

Stines, who stepped down as sheriff on Monday, pleaded not guilty to the murder last week. He reportedly looked down while the video played in court, according to the Associated Press.

Police haven’t shared a motive for the killing, but court officials revealed that Stines and Mullins, who served as a judge for 15 years, had lunch together earlier that day.

Kentucky State Police Detective Clayton Stamper said that the two men ate with several other people at a restaurant near the courthouse.

Mullins was reportedly heard asking Stines if they needed to meet privately in his chambers, Stamper reported.

The detective said he reviewed footage of the sheriff and judges’ meeting in Mullins’ chambers before the gunfire rang out.

“Sheriff Stines uses his telephone to make some phone calls,” Stamper described the moments before the shooting.

“He then borrows Judge Mullins’ cellphone and appears to make a call on that.”

Stamper reported that Stines’ daughter’s phone number was confirmed to be recently called on the judge’s phone at the time of his death.

He said that it’s unclear who Stines called and what was said during the conversations.

What we know about the sheriff and judge

The two even had lunch together on the day of the shooting, police said in court.

Before he was brutally murdered, Mullins served as the district judge of the 47th Judicial District, which presides over Letcher County, for 15 years.

According to his obituary, the judge is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Local residents say Stines served as a bailiff in Mullins’ court for years before he was elected sheriff in 2018, according to the Courier Journal.

Stines is a dad to a teenage daughter, whose phone number was on Mullins’ phone at the time of the shooting, cops confirmed in court on Tuesday.

Stines resigned from his position as sheriff on Monday after Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear publicly called for him to step down.

He is currently being held at the Leslie County Jail.

“It occurred after a phone call was made,” Stamper said about the shooting.

“I don’t know what was said.”

The judge’s phone was later found on his desk. Stines’ phone was with him when he was arrested.

SHERIFF’S CHILLING PLEA

The sheriff came out of the courtroom with his hands up in surrender after the shooting, Stamper testified.

“He was mostly calm, I thought,” Stamper said.

“I talked to him but he didn’t say nothing about why this had happened.

“Basically all he said was ‘treat me fair.’”

Stamper also added that Stines told police at his arrest, “They’re trying to kidnap my wife and kid.”

PAST LEGAL TROUBLES

Stines is being held at jail in another Kentucky county. He could serve 20 years to life in prison for the murder.

Because he’s accused of killing a public official, Stines could potentially face the death penalty. Prosecutors haven’t said if they’re seeking the death penalty for the former cop.

Three days before the shooting, Stines was removed from a federal lawsuit vaguely related to Mullins.

In a 2022 lawsuit filed by two women, one alleged a deputy sheriff forced her to have sex with him inside Mullins’ private chambers for six months in exchange for keeping her out of jail.

The court document alleged that Stines had “deliberate indifference in failing to adequately train and supervise,” the accused deputy, according to local outlet the Courier Journal.

Stines fired the deputy after the suit was filed in 2022, the outlet reported.

Court officials said it wasn’t clear if the lawsuit was related to last month’s shooting.

The U.S. Sun has reached out to the Kentucky State Police for comment.

The Courier Journal reported local residents said Mullins and Stines were friends for years.

Stines served as a bailiff in Mullins’ court for several years before he was elected sheriff in 2018, according to the Journal.

Katherine Ryan savages Russell Brand, P Diddy and Christina Aguilera in brutal Glamour Awards speech

ODIOUS blokes take note: Katherine Ryan has got your cards marked.

And there was one weasel-faced, scarf-wearing deadbeat whose ears would have been burning at the Glamour Women Of The Year party.

Katherine took aim at Russell Claim, who she alleged was a ‘sexual predator’ years before he was accused of a series of grim offences[/caption]

Kath, who is as intelligent as she is hilarious, has never named Russell Brand as the man she alleged was “a sexual predator” years before he was accused of a series of grim offences against women.

Brand, to this day, has denied all the allegations. But, as Katherine put it: “If he said it was true, he might end up in jail.”

Hosting the ceremony at Raffles OWO Hotel in central London, before being handed the Feminist Hero gong, Katherine was on fire.

She spoke at length about the nonentity in a bid to clear up what had been written about their run-in — when they appeared together on a never-aired episode of Comedy Central Roast in 2018.

“I’ll tell you everything that went down,” Katherine told the audience, which included Minnie Driver, Jodie Turner-Smith, Mollie King, Vick Hope and Myleene Klass.

‘Soul searching’

“Years ago, I didn’t want to take a job when I learned that he would also be in the cast.

“Then after some soul searching, I thought, ‘Why should I stay home?’.

“He’ll be there in his unnecessarily tight jeans, wearing a hoodie and w***ing off to a Tibetan monk for views, or whatever he gets up to.

“Every time I got a chance to speak to him, I decided I would say stuff like, ‘I’m not getting paid enough to be here, especially considering how many times my face will be on the news when the victims come forward’.”

Kath added: “I wasn’t trying to get him cancelled because everybody already knew. Why didn’t you tell the journalist, Katherine? Everybody knew.

“Why didn’t you tell the police, Katherine? Everybody already knew.”

She also mocked the men, including “comedians, musicians and actors” who got in touch afterwards for a “proof text” to show people it wasn’t them she’d been referring too.

With a glint in her eye, she joked about messaging back: “Do you really think you should be texting me after everything that happened between us?”

‘Can’t I just be a feminist who steals medication from Type 2 diabetics to transform myself into Christina Aguilera?’ joked Katherine during her speech

The roast didn’t end with Brand, as Katherine deadpanned her way through an opening monologue which gave some of Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes hosting speeches a run for their money.

She said with an eye-roll: “In a single year in the UK, 800,000 women have been victims of sexual assault. Surely P Diddy doesn’t have that kind of reach on the internet?”

She continued: “I, myself, haven’t exercised once in over 40 years, due to the threat of male violence . . . and also, I don’t want to. Can’t I just be a feminist who steals medication from Type 2 diabetics to transform myself into Christina Aguilera?”

Touché.

Before she went on stage, I caught up with Kath, who told me: “I hope I don’t get cancelled.”

No chance. I want a repeat.

Perrie plans the Way ahead

HER new single You Go Your Way is out tomorrow, and Perrie Edwards was buzzing over it when we met up at the after-party, above.

She told me: “It’s a song I did with Joy Anonymous. I absolutely love him.

“He was the best person to work with. I just hope everyone loves it as much as me.”

Perrie’s debut album is expected next year and she has big plans. She added: “I’d love to play live. It’s something I want to do as soon as I’ve got more music out. When I’ve got that material, I will be looking at a tour. That is my dream.

“I have been loving the process, but I just want it out now so I can do some shows.”

Perrie also confirmed she’s still best mates with Little Mix bandmates Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall, adding: “It has been so lovely to watch each other doing our own thing.

“In the future I hope that we can do stuff together again. Little Mix will never die.”

TAYLOR STILL TOPS OLD GOLD

MUSIC lovers are going back to the future.

Official Charts UK has revealed heritage acts dominate the biggest albums of 2024 (so far) with their greatest hits offerings.

Five of the Top Ten places are taken up by compilation records thanks to the likes of Eltom John, Abba, and Oasis. Fleetwood Mac’s 50 Years: Don’t Stop from 2018 is No6.

Eminem, who has had a resurgence this year thanks to his 12th album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), comes in at No8 with his greatest hits offering.

The current best-selling album of the year comes from Taylor Swift
With three more months to go, I can’t see anyone knocking The Tortured Poets Department off the top.

CHELLE’S NEW BOOKING?

Michelle Keegan told Bizarre Editor Ellie Henman that there were more series of Brassic to come[/caption]

I MUST have been living under a rock, as I’ve only just got into TV’s excellent Brassic.

Admitting my shame to its star Michelle Keegan, she said there were more series to come after the fourth started streaming last month.

And it’s not the only project she is eyeing up. She became a worldwide sensation thanks to her role in Netflix’s Fool Me Once, a thriller based on the novel by Harlan Coben.

After I spied her reading his novel Think Twice, I asked Michelle if she’d had a script sent her way. She said with a massive smile: “I’d love to work with Harlan again.

“He is a genius, he is so good at what he does.”

Watch this space.

PAM: FILM FREED ME

IT’S been a rough few years for Pamela Anderson – but she’s on the way up again.

And after picking up the Impact Award, the Baywatch actress credited her role in Gia Coppola’s new film The Last Showgirl for bringing her back to life.

She was by Pam’s side all night and the one who gave her the gong on stage.

Pamela said: “Gia, you gave me such a perfect chance in this film. You set the stage for me to shine, a place to put some of my hurt. And this role totally set me free.

“This role helped me shake off the cobwebs of a dream I’d almost forgotten – to be an actress. The mask came off and the world opened up.”

Visibly emotional, she added: “I’m living in the mystery of what no one knows next, and that’s exciting. You get an opportunity to be here, let alone a second chance. I’m a survivor of sexual violence. I now see the pattern I was stuck in. And I know it takes tremendous strength to heal.

“These last few years felt like a fresh slate. What happened to me defined me. But it’s what I do that defines me.

“This is what my best looks like. And that’s good enough.”

Hear, hear, Pammi.

Loose Women star Ayda was due to star on the new series of the game show, albeit solo, playing as an expert on Robbie.

The American actress’ knowledge on her rock star husband’s life will be put to the test on the new series.

However, during the show as host Michael introduced a civilian contestant to the competition, Robbie made a surprise appearance.

Arriving in dramatic fashion, the former Take That star rose up from the depths of the studio floor.

Michael, 48, exclaimed: “No! That’s done something weird to my brain. Okay, so hi, how’s it going?”

Robbie then introduced himself just like any other contestant, saying: “I’m Robbie, I’m 50 and I’m from Stoke-On-Trent.

“I’m aquarius and I auditioned for a pop band and I got in and they were called Take That.”

Asked what he’d do with any potential prize money, the singer replied: “I need to figure out a way to pay for my wife’s glam. To keep my wife in handbags, shoes and foundation.”

Despite being a favourite with the audience, Michael eventually sent Robbie packing from the hot seat.

Also starring in The Wheel’s new series is daytime legend Richard Madeley, former Love Island host Laura Whitmore and Leigh Francis.

The Wheel – now in its fifth series – sees celebs and civilians come together to try and win a cash jackpot.

Contestants are guided by famous faces in a certain topic area in order to successfully answer questions and walk away with a tidy sum of money.

Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel returns to BBC One on Saturday, 12th October.
