The exact time to buy pumpkin for Halloween & when to carve so it looks its best for trick or treating, pro reveals

HALLOWEEN is just around the corner and as Brits are getting ready for the spooktacular holiday, an expert has revealed the exact time to buy your pumpkin.

Around 24 million pumpkins are sold every year in the UK to mark the spooky celebration – but 18,000 tonnes of pumpkin waste end up in landfills.

One expert has revealed the exact date to buy your pumpkin for the spooktacular holiday just weeks away[/caption]

With a 5,000% increase in Google searches for “how long do pumpkins last”, Richard Price, supermarket expert and owner of Britsuperstore has outlined when to buy your pumpkin and how to preserve it in time for Halloween.

When should I buy my pumpkin?

Although you may be excited to start decking your home well before the little trick-and-treaters arrive, it’s best to leave the pumpkin buying and carving until a couple of weeks before.

Richard explained that the best time do head to the shops – or the pumpkin patch – is one to two weeks before the holiday (unless you’re ready to keep forking out for fresh pumpkins until then).

The pro said: “You should buy your pumpkin no more than one to two weeks before 31 October to keep your pumpkin fresh for carving.

”Ideally, you should purchase your pumpkin between the 15 and 20 October, so it stays in good condition for carving and display.

”To keep it fresh in time for Halloween, store the pumpkin in a cool, dry place in your home.”

How long can an uncarved pumpkin last?

Have you already purchased your pumpkin and fear it may not last until Halloween?

No need to worry, as according to the supermarket whizz, an uncarved pumpkin can stay fresh for some time.

”Your uncarved pumpkin can last 2 to 3 months. Choose a large, heavy pumpkin with smooth, unblemished skin, and avoid any with a dry or brittle stem.

”Instead, choose a pumpkin with a green stem about 3 to 5 inches long, with tough skin which shows it is ripe.”

When should I carve my pumpkin for Halloween?

Carving the pumpkin is undeniably one of the most fun-filled activities of the holiday – for both parents and their kids, where imagination can go wild.

To help the pumpkin maintain its shape and freshness throughout the night, Richard advised to carve it no more than three days before Halloween.

”As carving your pumpkin speeds up the decaying process, it’s a good idea to wait as long as you can before carving,” he said.

How can I preserve my pumpkin to keep it fresh?

  1. Choose a fresh pumpkin: “Choose a pumpkin that’s firm with no soft spots, cuts, or bruises. A healthy pumpkin will last longer.”
  2. Handle the pumpkin gently: “Be careful when handling your pumpkin to avoid any damage that could lead to bacteria entering any cracks or gaps.”
  3. Clean and dry the pumpkin: “Before carving, wipe the outside of the pumpkin with a damp cloth, and make sure to dry it well to prevent mould from growing.”
  4. Don’t carve too early: Since carving speeds up decay, it’s best to wait at most two days before Halloween to carve your pumpkin.
  5. Apply vaseline to the carvings: “After carving, apply a thin coat of Vaseline to the cut edges to help retain moisture and prevent them from drying out.”
  6. Refrigerate overnight: “If possible, store your carved pumpkin in the fridge overnight before Halloween to slow down decomposition.”
  7. Store in a cool spot: “When not on display, store your pumpkin in a cool, dry area to avoid moisture and sunlight which can cause it to rot faster.”

How long will my carved pumpkin last?

The pumpkin has been carved – but how long will it last before withering away?

The guru said: “Carved pumpkins usually last 3 to 5 days, but weather and the amount of sunlight can reduce their lifespan.

”In cooler climates, your pumpkin might last up to a week.

”In warmer temperatures, it will deteriorate in just a couple of days.

”No matter the conditions, carving pumpkins shortens their life, as cutting through the skin allows bacteria to start breaking down the interior.”

F1 race axed: FIA confirm scheduled event will not go ahead despite ‘widespread support’ amid workload fears

FORMULA 1 chiefs have axed the “rookie race” that had been set to take place in Abu Dhabi later this year.

Bosses had planned to stage a sprint-style race in a bid to give the most talented up-and-coming a drivers a stage on which to showcase their talents.

Abu Dhabi, which is set to host the final race of the F1 season on December 7, had been identified as the location.

FIA chiefs claim that there is “widespread support” for such an event to take place in future.

But plans for it to go ahead later this year have been scrapped, with the FIA confirming their decision in an official statement.

It read: “While the concept received widespread support, it was determined that, due to timing and organisational constraints, the event would not take place in 2024, and discussions would continue to formulate a potential concept and plan for 2025.”

According to the BBC, a final decision was made at a meeting of the F1 Commission on Wednesday.

Their report adds that it was determined that more time is required in order to fine tune how the event will run.

It’s claimed that all parties, including the teams themselves, felt that the plan had been “rushed”.

One such concern was the further work load it would place upon team members.

The event would have taken place after the final F1 race of the season, therefore extending what will already have been the longest campaign in the history of the sport.

Formula 1 is currently in the middle of a four-week break following the Singapore Grand Prix, which took place on September 22.

The next race is set to be staged in Austin, Texas on October 20.

This will then lead into a busy conclusion to the season, with remaining Grands Prix in Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi.

Max Verstappen leads the driver standings, despite having not won a race since June.

He is 52 points ahead of nearest challenger Lando Norris.

Noughties popstar reveals stalker catfished their fans for sex chats in terrifying 15 year campaign

NOUGHTIES pop icons Tegan and Sara Quin are opening up about their 15-year hell that saw a longtime stalker catfish and take advantage of their fans.

The Canadian twin sisters, 43, shot to fame at the turn of the 21st century and later became icons to the queer community through their songs.

The fans developed a close online fanbase, feeling they had a “responsibility” for them[/caption]

But in the new Hulu/Disney+ documentary, Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara, the pair open up about the dark side of their fame after discovering someone had been pretending to be them online to form explicit relationships to their admirers.

In the trailer for the film, fans who were directly affected speak out for the first time, admitting some messages were sexual in nature as their “relationship” with the person they believed to be Tegan progressed.

Starting off as a fake Facebook account, the fake Tegan – referred to now as “Fegan” – would send messages to fans before developing close attachments to them.

The person was able to abuse the fact that Tegan and Sara had developed a close online community with their fans already to make them appear more legitimate.

It wasn’t until one fan, Julie, was sent a password protected shared drive and saw the red flags, telling cameras: “I reached out to her management and got a text saying ‘she has no idea who you are’. And I said, ‘well then Tegan has a big problem’.”

As time passed, both Tegan and Sara, as well as their management team, collaborators and family members, believed they were being hacked as “Fegan” started impersonating the singer more and more.

It became clear that the catfisher had access to the pair’s personal information, as well as information on their unreleased work and demos, their mother’s medical history and email addresses of those that work closely with them.

In the trailer, they admit it introduced the terrifying idea that the catfish was someone within their inner circle.

Soon, multiple people were coming forward with their own claims about messaging Tegan, none of whom actually were, with one saying they sent “explicit, sexual things” while another confirming on camera they thought they were in a relationship with Tegan.

During the time of the hacking, around 2011, users were not as aware of the importance of online safety, with stars legitimately speaking to their fans online.

Talking to Rolling Stone about the terror of having a copycat, Tegan explained: “Back then no one even understood what this was and there was no place to talk about it.

“It was heavy to carry at the time. Now, I feel like I can expel some of the grief and fatigue and frustration and guilt and responsibility because I have context and so does the world on what this is. But back then, I just felt ashamed and just thought, ‘Please let it end.’”

Soon, the pair withdrew from their public outreach to assert a bigger boundary between them and the fans.

Sara told Rolling Stone: “When Fegan happened, I was upset and terrified, but it also confirmed something that I already was feeling, which was a desire to put a bigger boundary around us and our personal lives.

“Sometimes it felt like community. There was something beautiful about it. But it seemed like it was always right on the edge of curdling. Like it would only take one bad actor.”

Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara premieres October 18, only on Hulu.

Jay Blades hosts bizarre late-night DJ sessions after being charged with controlling & coercive behaviour against wife

BBC STAR Jay Blades has hosted a bizarre late-night DJ session after being charged with coercive behaviour towards his wife.

It comes as the Repair Shop presenter, 54, is currently off screens – and has deleted all his social media accounts following his court appearance last month.

The DJ set was part of a midnight broadcast, and he was seen with his arms aloft and chatting to a small audience as he controlled the tunes.

Wearing a black jumper and his trademark specs, the star introduced himself as Jay Blades MBE on the live streamed session.

One viewer told the Mirror: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw he was online doing a session – it’s a website called MixCloud which DJs use.

“He seemed like a guy without a care in the world, and looked like he was having a few drinks and he was dancing away on his own – maybe that is helping to get him through.

“At the end he said he’d be back online soon and asked viewers to keep an eye on his channels for updates about it.”

Blades cut to an image of himself with Dame Judi Dench during the gig.

The BBC and other TV channels have shelved shows featuring the presenter, including this year’s upcoming Christmas special of The Repair Shop, in light of him being charged.

The show’s creators, Ricochet, are said to be considering a permanent replacement for him and are already eyeing up furniture restorer Will Kirk and craftsman Dominic Chinea from the series.

Channel 5 have also shelved a documentary series Blades was making called A Country House Through Time.

And Channel 4 have confirmed they will not be making a sequel to his recent travelogue with Dame Judi DenchThe Odd Couple.

A TV insider told the Sun: “Everything is up in the air following Blades getting charged, but TV chiefs didn’t want to be seen to act slowly.

“Until court proceedings have run their course, everything is getting put on hold, and alternative plans are being considered.

“But The Repair Shop is likely to continue as it’s hugely popular and the feeling is that the show is bigger than any individual.”

MARRIAGE SPLIT

Estranged wife Lisa Zbozen had posted a message on Instagram on May 2 saying the couple’s 18-month marriage had ended.

Dad-of-three Blades was then arrested the same day.

He was bailed on the condition he does not contact Lisa directly or indirectly.

Blades will next appear at Worcester Crown Court on October 11.

The charge sheet states Blades allegedly “repeatedly or continuously engaged in behaviour which was controlling or coercive, namely physical and emotional abuse towards Lisa Zbozen”.

The offences allegedly took place between January 1, 2023, and April 9, 2024.

Blades and Lisa married in November 2022 in Barbados, a year after their engagement.

Photographs of their intimate beach-front ceremony were published in Hello! Magazine.

They said their vows in front of 15 guests and exchanged rings designed by Blades’ Repair Shop colleague Richard Talman.
