GP, 53, ‘posed as nurse giving Covid booster jab in bid to kill mum’s partner by injecting him with dangerous poison’

A GP donned a disguise to trick his way into his own mother’s house to poison his step-dad while pretending to give him a Covid jab, a court heard.

Dr Thomas Kwan, 53 posed as a community nurse as part of an elaborate plan to murder Patrick O’Hara so he could inherit mum Jenny’s estate, it was said.

It was so successful that even she was fooled by his surgical mask, hat and dark glasses, the jury was told.

Moments after he had been given the injection, Mr O’Hara, 72, fell ill as the deadly flesh-eating disease Necrotising Fasciitis began to overtake his body.

Kwan fled in his Toyota Yaris car fitted with false number plates in a bid to evade police cameras, Newcastle crown court heard.

He was arrested two weeks later and cops uncovered the full extent of his alleged murder plot which included inventing a fictitious NHS department and doctor to trick Mr O’Hara into having the supposed Covid vaccine.

Prosecutor Mr Peter Makepeace KC told jurors: “Sometimes the truth really is stranger than fiction.

“The case you are about to try, on any view, is an extraordinary case.

“Thomas Kwan, the defendant was in January of this year a respected and experienced medical doctor in general practice.

“From November 2023 at the latest, and probably long before then, he devised an intricate plan to kill his mother’s long-term partner, Patrick O’Hara.

“That man had done absolutely nothing to offend Mr Kwan. He was, however, a potential impediment to Mr Kwan inheriting his mother’s estate upon her death.

“Mr Kwan used his encyclopaedic knowledge of poisons to carry out his plan to disguise himself as a community nurse, attend Mr O’Hara’s address, the home he shared with the defendant’s mother, and inject him with a dangerous poison under the pretext of administering a Covid booster injection.

“It was a very carefully planned scheme. It involved Mr Kwan forging NHS documentation to lure Mr O’Hara into his plan; personal disguise to shield his identity from his victim and his mother.

“It involved him falsifying the number plates on his car and using false details to book into a hotel.

“It was an audacious plan, it was a plan to murder a man in plain sight, to murder a man right in front of his own mother’s eyes, that man’s life partner.”

Mr O’Hara and Kwan’s mother Jenny Leung, 73, were in a stable relationship for more than 20 years and lived in a house in Newcastle city centre owned by Ms Leung.

Kwan has admitted administering a noxious substance to Mr O’Hara – who survived – but denied attempting to murder or inflict grievous bodily harm with intent on January 22 this year, claiming he only meant to cause him “mild discomfort”.

The case continues.

Future of AppleTV+ drama starring Hollywood A-lister revealed after just one series on air

HE might be wowing in a new drama series, but AppleTV+ viewers will be treated to a second season of crime drama Sugar.

Colin Farrell first appeared as Los Angeles PI John Sugar earlier this year, but fans have already been bowled over the series.

Apple has confirmed that Detective Sugar will be back for a second season, with more drama set to follow.

The first season of the detective drama saw Farrell play John Sugar, a private investigator hired by Hollywood titan Jonathan Siegel, played by James Cromwell, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his granddaughter, Olivia, played by Sydney Chandler.

The first season also included Amy Ryan, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Sydney Chandler, Alex Hernandez and Kirby, formerly known as Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

Viewers were left reeling at the end of series one as they discovered Farrell’s character wasn’t just an average private investigator, but is in fact an alien.

The second season will likely pick up from this jaw dropping moment, but it’s one that creator Mark Protosevich doesn’t see as he isn’t joining series two.

The second season has been joined by Sam Catlin who has worked on Preacher.

Catin is expected to guide Farrell’s Sugar on his path as he continues to search for his missing sister.

Season two is also likely to include a face off against her kidnapper Henry Thorpe, played by Jason Butler Harner.

Discussing the season renewal in a statement, executive producers Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg said: “It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace Sugar, and we are thrilled to return for a second season.

“We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell, and of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.”

Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, added: “Since its premiere, audiences have been gripped by the mysteries and twists of Sugar, with an incredible performance by Colin Farrell at the center.

“Colin, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon and the entire team behind this series have brilliantly blended genres to create a compelling, can’t-miss series that keeps viewers guessing, and we cannot wait to see where Detective John Sugar finds himself in season two.”

Major motorway’s speed limit will be be LIFTED with all signs changed in weeks – everything you need to know

A MAJOR motorway will see its speed limit lifted within weeks as officials set about changing signs immediately.

The route has seen traffic slowed significantly for nearly four years under trialled Net Zero rules.

The speed limit on the M602 will be raised after four years[/caption]

Finished in 1982, the M602 is one of Britain’s shorter motorways, extending for just four miles.

It was originally intended as part of the much larger M52 but was instead used two link that route with the M62 when the latter was diverted in order to extend it to Liverpool.

As a result, the M602 now runs East to West across Greater Manchester, connecting Eccles at one end and Salford at the other.

Nonetheless, thanks to the relatively poor state of public transport in the region, the M602 remains busy and acts as a vital route into Salford city centre.

But for the past four years, motorists using it have had to conform to stricter rules than on the rest of the nation’s motorways.

As part of a long-term trial to monitor emissions, the M602 saw its speed limit reduced to 60mph in 2020.

The theory was that making drivers slow down would lead to less pollution and improve air quality.

National Highways, which conducted the tests, now report that it worked and concluded that “air quality at these locations has improved and is now compliant.”

This means the restrictions will now be lifted after four years, putting the limit back up to 70mph.

Signage across the length of the M602 will be modified to reflect this “in the coming weeks”.

This should mean that drivers can expect to be allowed to push the pedal that little bit further from next month.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The M602 trial between junctions 1 and 3 has been completed.

“The speed limit will now return to 70mph from 60mph.

“Work for this is underway and we are planning to remove all associated signage in the coming weeks.

“Data for the air quality report is presently in the process of being compiled.

cities with clean air zones drivers warned over new clean air zones in british cities is where you live on the list
The rules were brought in to drive down emissions

“Ultimately the air quality challenge will be solved ‘at the tailpipe’ by vehicle manufacturers and changes in vehicle use.

“Until this happens, we will continue our extensive programme of pioneering research and solutions.”

However, they did add that: “Air quality monitoring tubes will remain in place to provide a greater understanding of any impacts following the end of this trial.”

It is not confirmed whether this could potentially lead to a reversal of the decision if emissions return to previous levels.

Claire Sweeney and Sue Devaney shared a behind the scenes look[/caption]

It has been ten years since the entire cast, including all the children and on-screen pets, posed together for an image.

The show’s last picture from 2014 was taken to mark the show’s move to the then-brand new MediaCityUK set.

The cast have already shared a behind-the-scenes first look at the epic image which is set to be unveiled officially later this year to coincide with Helen Worth’s exit.

Helen can be seen sitting front and centre in a video clip showing the cast ready for the shot.

She is sat directly next to Sue Nicholls, who plays her on-screen mother Audrey Roberts, as well as Sally Dynevor, who plays close pal Sally Metcalfe.

Other cast spotted on the front row include David Neilson accompanied by Roy’s pet pooch Freddie, Tina O’Brien (Sarah), Bill Roache (Ken), Barbara Knox (Rita), Michael Le Vell (Kevin), Jane Danson (Leanne), Georgia Taylor (Toyah) and Alan Halsall (Tyrone).

Claire Sweeney who plays Cassie Plummer also shared a behind-the-scenes look at the big shoot as she headed up to the set with Debbie Webster actress and soap icon Sue Devaney.

The Cassie actress could be heard saying: “This is iconic.

“We are going up to do the cast photo and I woke up this morning and I thought I can’t believe I’m going to do the Corrie cast photo!”

Sue then added: “It is just amazing, everybody is standing up there!”

Claire then panned the phone to show the construction of the set-up as the cast got into place for the image.

The pair then giggled in excitement as Sue humoursly added: “Even the doggies are here!”

Bethany Platt actress Lucy Fallon also shared an image of her and co-star Paddy Bever (Max Turner) as she likened the event to being “school picture day”.

Gail’s final episodes are only a few weeks away from being played out on-screens after Helen chose to quit the show after 50 years.

The last-ever cast pic was taken in 2014 to mark the show’s move to MediaCityUK[/caption]

Initially, it was reported Sean Wilson would reprise his role as Martin Platt, Gail’s ex-husband, for her final scenes.

However, this was later axed – with Cold Feet actor John Thomson returning as children’s entertainer Jesse Chadwick instead.

It comes as many fans have already called out the plot involving Gail and Jesse before it has even aired.

Taking to X, one wrote: “Utterly diabolical exit for Gail and of course, abysmal show!!!”

Another penned: “I really hate how #Corrie have written Gail’s exit.

“She would never leave to run off into the sunset with a man.

“Especially a man as forgettable as What’s-his-face. Truly abysmal.

“I’ve always been that underdog guy, from my amateur days. I’ve had to borrow boots, shorts and fight kit.

“I know I’ve got a very tough night ahead of me, he’s the top guy in the cruiserweight division, but I believe I can get in there, beat him, give it my all and leave everything in there.”

Most football lovers believed it was travesty, with many unable or un- willing, to pay the £53.99 monthly subscription for TNT Sport.

Although live European matches have not returned to free TV, fans can tune into a Match of the Day-style show on the BBC from 10.40pm.

A brief match-by-match highlight compilation is also available from 10pm on the BBC website as well.

Both the show and online package can be viewed very Wednesday.

Aston Villa’s incredible 1-0 triumph over Bayern Munich at Villa Park was the first game to be shown this week.

Emery’s men went ahead via super-sub Jhon Duran’s 79th minute audacious off-the-cuff lob.

Liverpool also retained their 100 per cent record in the competition this season with a routine 2-0 win over Bolonga with goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mo Salah.

And fans were thrilled to learn that they could catch all of the action for free.
