MMA promotion on track to break UFC record with stadium show featuring ex-footballer who played against World Cup stars
OKTAGON MMA are on course to break the UFC’s attendance record with the help of German football.
The promotion are braced for their biggest event yet when Christian Eckerlin faces Christian Jungwirth at Eintracht Frankfurt’s stadium.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s stadium will play host to up to 60,000 MMA fans[/caption]And they are hoping to cram a stunning 60,000 into the Deutsche Bank Park on October 12 when bragging rights go on the line.
That would beat the UFC’s highest-attendance record – which was set in 2015 when 56,214 watched Holly Holm upset Ronda Rousey in Australia.
Oktagon co-founder Pavol Neruda told SunSport: “I think we will beat this number. It would be amazing.
“The arena is so huge, the atmosphere is so big, and I see this as a huge statement for the world for what we are doing.
“Now I think this will be the thing that the whole world will watch.”
Eckerlin played against the likes of Mats Hummels and Bastian Schweinsteiger at youth football level.
But after crossing over to MMA aged 21 after hanging up his boots, he has become a local fighting legend.
Eckerlin, 37, and Jungwirth, also 37, will battle it out to determine the king of German MMA in the Bundesliga stadium.

It will be the biggest night in Oktagon’s short five-year history.
Neruda and his business partner Ondrej Novotny once rejected £2million to sell their promotion – which is now valued at £100m.
Upon reflection, Neruda said: “We are really happy with where we are.
“External money is always a question, but luckily, we are in no rush to sell Oktagon.
“If we felt that the money would boost the business and grow Oktagon, then it would make sense, but we are building the business in the way that we want.”

90s SOAP heartthrob Jesse Spencer is worlds away from his Neighbours character Billy Kennedy as he stars in a new Aussie series 30 years after his breakout role.
Jesse, 45, is unrecognisable in the new Hulu period drama Last Days of the Space Age which is now available to stream on Disney+.
Now he has returned to Australia to star in Last Days of the Space Age[/caption]This exciting new role and return to Australia comes exactly 30 years after Jesse first appeared on the Melbourne based soap as Billy Kennedy.
He appeared as Billy, the son of Neighbours legends Susan (Jackie Woodburne) and Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher), from 1994 to 2000 and also made a one-off return in 2005.
But in the trailer for Last Days of the Space Age Jessie, who is playing a parent and sporting a heft beard, looks worlds away from his teen heartthrob persona.
The Melbourne-born actor previously spoke to TV Week about his reasons for joining the Disney series.
“It was nice to be able to just work for a few months on my first Aussie project in over 20 years. I was so excited to do it,” he gushed.
As the youngest member of the Kennedy family, Billy was involved in many coming of age and relationship storylines, including his notable relationship with Melissa Drenth (Aimee Robertson) before eventually growing up and moving away from the street.
After five years on the soap, Jesse decided to call it quits, citing repetitive and “boring” storylines as being his main reason for leaving, although he did later acknowledge that Neighbours had been a great launch pad for his career.
After leaving Ramsay Street, Jess relocated to the States and landed a huge international role on the medical drama House as Dr Robert Chase, starring alongside Hugh Laurie, from 2004 to 2012.
Jesse then led the action drama Chicago Fire as Captain Matthew Casey until 2020, and has since made guest appearances on the show.
Off screen in 2020, he married his long-time girlfriend, research scientist Kali Woodruff, in a private ceremony in Florida.
Jesse is now starring in Last Days of the Space Age, his biggest role since Chicago Fire and his first back in Australia in over 20 years.
Explaining his journey to the series, Jesse said: “I left Chicago Fire, and then I started a family, and I was doing that for a while, then Last Days of the Space Age came up,.”
He admitted that returning to Australia for work did come with its challenges.
He said: “I had to work on my dialect a bit, because being in front of the camera for 10 years doing American [accents], it was hard to switch that off.”
Neighbours stars who made it big
The long-running Aussie soap has launched the careers of some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Here are some of the Neighbours alums who went on to make it big after starring on the soap...
Kylie Minogue
- Before she hit the big time with her music career, Kylie shot to fame playing Charlene Mitchell on Neighbours. Shortly after her arrival, Kylie began an on and off-screen romance with co-star Jason Donovan, who played Scott Robinson, which gained the couple an army of adoring fans.
Jason Donovan
- After his stint as Scott, singer and actor Jason became an international popstar and had his pick acting of roles. He moved to the U.K., married, had children and has since starred in over a dozen West End show, most notably Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat.
Alan Dale
- New Zealand born actor Alan was one of Neighbours 12 original cast members having made his debut as Jim Robinson on the soap’s first episode on 18 March 1985. As the head of the Robinson clan, widower Jim lived at Number 26 Ramsay Street with his children Paul, Julie, Scott and Lucy, and was a real anchor in the community. He stayed with the show for eight years, before his character was killed off in dramatic scenes aired in 1993 but which still reverberate through the soap to this day.
Margot Robbie
- Way before she was Barbie or Harley Quinn, Margot was best known as Ramsay Street resident Donna Freedman. Her notable storylines included her marriage to Ringo Brown and becoming a young widow following his tragic death. After three years she bid farewell to the soap and Australia with a plan to make a name for herself in Hollywood which she did when she bagged the role of Naomi Lapaglia opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street.
Jesse Spencer
- Jesse rocked up on Ramsay street in 1994 with the rest of the Kennedy clan. He stayed for five years, literally growing up in front of the camera, but in 2000 felt it was time to spread his wings and head for Hollywood. It was certainly a smart move as he went on to bag leading roles in popular shows like House and Chicago Fire.
Russell Crowe
- New Zealand-native Russell had a brief arc on Neighbours, appearing in four episodes of the soap 1987 as Kenny Larkin, the former cellmate of Street resident Henry Ramsay. The role obviously got him noticed though because he quickly went on to become a fully-fledged Hollywood A-lister, winning the Best Actor Oscar for his standout performance as Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator.
“I was so used to going [to that accent]. It’s weird how hard it is to let it go.”
What is the Last Days of the Space Age about?
The eight-part drama Last Days of the Space Age focuses on three families in Perth, Western Australia in 1979 as the American space station Skylab crash-lands on earth just outside the city, as the city is gearing up to host the Miss Universe 1979 pageant.
All 8 episodes of the Hulu drama premiered in Disney+ in the U.K. on October 1.
Created and written by David Chidlow, Last Days of Space Age marks “the end of an era, and everything is about to change,” according to the official synopsis.
But as tensions rise in his home city, Billy struggles in the face of mounting financial pressure[/caption]“History is at a turning point, with a global beauty pageant creating a media frenzy. But that’s nothing compared to the drama three seemingly ordinary families are enduring — in a town which will never be the same,” it reads.
While also gearing up to host the Miss Universe pageant, the city starts to fall apart, beginning with a blackout brought about by the striking union workers of the power industry. Matters get even worse when the American space station Skylab crash-lands just outside a close-knit coastal community.
The trailer quickly introduces us to these central families, including Jesse’s character Tony Bissett and his wife Judy (Radha Mitchell), whose family is going through a rough patch as Tony faces mounting financial pressures.
Olympus has Fallen star Radha previously played Catherine O’Brien on Neighbours before also setting off for a career in the U.S.
The duo are joined by a powerhouse ensemble of local and international talent, including Deborah Mailman (Total Control), Iain Glen (Game of Thrones), Linh-Dan Pham (Blue Bayou), Thomas Weatherall (Heartbreak High), George Mason (The Power of the Dog), Vico Thai (Total Control), Ines English (Dead Lucky), Jacek Koman (Jack Irish) and more.
He has gone on to have a very successful Hollywood career[/caption]All episodes of Last Days of the Space Age are available to stream on Disney+.

NHS surgeon who couldn’t find his scalpel cut patient’s chest open with the penknife he used to slice up his lunch
A SURGEON used a penknife to cut open a patient’s chest during a cardiac arrest, claiming he couldn’t find a clean scalpel.
The patient, who was treated at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton in December 2023, survived.
A surgeon at University Hospitals Sussex used a penknife to cut open a patient’s chest[/caption]The BBC reported that internal documents revealed colleagues felt the surgeon’s behaviour was “questionable”.
It said they were “very surprised” he was unable to find a sterile scalpel to carry out the procedure.
Instead, he used a swiss army knife which he normally used to chop up fruit for his lunch.
Prof Graeme Poston, an expert witness on clinical negligence and a former consultant surgeon, told the BBC: “It surprises me and appals me.
“Firstly, a penknife is not sterile.
“Secondly it is not an operating instrument. And thirdly all the kit [must have been] there.”
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, has since added the patient was due to have an emergency operation.
But on the way to the theatre, he collapsed with a cardiac arrest outside of the operating room, which is when the surgeon intervened, the trust told Health Service Journal (HSJ).
People who have a cardiac arrest – which is when the heart stops beating – will suffer irreversible brain damage within minutes unless they can be resuscitated.
Instead of waiting for a scalpel, the surgeon used the penknife to relieve gas trapped in the chest, otherwise known as a tension pneumothorax.
It can cause the lung to collapse and other potentially life-threatening complications if not treated urgently.
He was also successfully resuscitated outside the theatre before being taken inside the operating room for surgery.
The BBC said it had also discovered the same surgeon carried out three supposedly low-risk operations in two months where all three patients died soon after, which the trust refutes.
The trust refused to add further comment.
‘Outside normal procedures’
Professor Catherine Urch, the trust’s chief medical officer, previously told the BBC: “The patient’s life was thankfully saved as a result of the actions of the surgical team, but everyone involved has accepted that those actions taken at the moment were outside normal procedures, and should not have been necessary.
“The surgeon involved reported the incident, and together with the wider team, they have reviewed what happened, to learn lessons.
“The patient was fully informed as part of our commitment to duty of candour, and the team rapidly made changes as a result, as well as sharing their learning with colleagues at patient safety meetings.”
It comes as Sussex Police are investigating allegations of medical negligence at the trust between 2015 and 2021, relating to neurosurgery and general surgery at the Brighton Hospital.
‘Another reason to be concerned’
A Sussex Police spokeswoman told The Sun: “A number of cases from within the specified NHS departments and during the specified time period have been assessed and are forming part of the ongoing investigation.
“A dedicated team of specially trained officers are in contact with those patients or families of patients whose cases are included in the investigation and providing information to support them while the investigation is ongoing.
“We are working closely with partner agencies and the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is co-operating fully with our investigation.”
Brain surgeon ‘let her daughter, 13, drill hole into patient’s skull’
A BRAIN surgeon in Austria is under fire for allegedly allowing her 13-year-old daughter to drill a hole in a patient’s skull.
A 33-year-old man was flown to University Hospital Graz, in Styria, in January with serious head injuries following an accident in an Austrian forest.
The unnamed female neurosurgeon is alleged to have allowed her teenage daughter to participate in the emergency surgery, according to Austria’s Kronen Zeitung.
The newspaper reported that she was even allowed to drill a hole in the patient’s skull.
The surgery was successful, but in April, an anonymous tip-off to Graz public prosecutor’s office prompted an investigation.
The patient found out about the incident from the news, only to have the police tell him in July that he was the victim.
Nisha Sharma, principal lawyer at Slater and Gordon, who is acting for patients and families in cases of poor standards of care at the Royal Sussex, said: “For months we have been shocked by ongoing details emerging from the Royal Sussex, but this case involving the surgeon using his own penknife is appalling.
“The facts that are being uncovered about practices at this hospital are genuinely shocking to the community – people living in Brighton rely on the Royal Sussex for their own care and that of their families, and this is yet another reason for them to be deeply concerned.”
Where is the Big Brother 2024 house?
BIG Brother has been filmed in three different locations since the show began in the year 2000.
Here is everything you need to know about where the new housemates will be living when Big Brother returns to our screens on Sunday, October 6 at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
AJ Odudu and Will Best are hosting the new series[/caption]Where is the Big Brother 2024 house?
When the show began at the turn of the century, Big Brother was famously located at 3 Mills Studios in Bow, London for one year.
Big Brother moved to Elstree Studios in 2001, but the house was eventually demolished after the final series in 2018.
Filming will now take place at Garden Studios, which is a newly-built studio in West London.
In line with the new logo, the property has been given a colourful makeover.
The renovations made to the property include a huge new extension to expand the garden area that showcases a luxury hot tub area.
But that’s not the only thing set to change in the property.
The producers have hinted that there will be new tougher tasks to look forward to in the new series.
Speaking to The Sun, host Will shared his excitement about the upcoming tasks, stating: “I’m excited about the tasks, I think the tasks this year, maybe some learning not learning as that makes it sound like there were things that could have been better as the tasks were phenomenal last series.”
He said “But I’ve been speaking to a few members of the team and I think they’ve raised the bar even further this series,” and added that the tasks have been “taken up a notch.”
When the Big Brother house opened its doors in 2023, the MailOnline reported that the new space boasts all the “latest production technologies” and “versatile staging”.
A source said: “Garden Studios is the ideal location for filming the new Big Brother series.
“Not only is it London-based but it’s only been open for a year and promises the highest standard of production and also a commitment to sustainability.”
They added: “Elstree Studios became famous for Big Brother and its live studio audience and bosses are hoping Garden Studios will grow to be as loved as the show’s first iconic home.”
The new location was first revealed in the first episode of BB’s return on October 8, 2023.
Is the Big Brother backyard really outside?
Big Brother producers value the privacy of the show which means there are high walls around the garden.
This is so there is no contact with the outside world for the duration of filming.
It is also for security reasons as people from the outside will not be able to climb in.
Do Big Brother contestants get paid?
Big Brother houseguests do indeed get paid during their time on the show but it’s not for participating in the show.
Speaking to the Metro, a Big Brother spokesperson denied that any housemates negotiated specific fees to take part.
“Unlike Celebrity Big Brother, housemates are not paid to participate as they have a chance of winning £100,000,” the rep commented.
However, series 15 star Mark Byron said Big Brother helps the housemates by offering a small cash sum to help with the bills on the outside world.
He said: “They give you a little bit to help you, they do give you a subsidy. I think, when I was on, it was only something like £50. It’s not a lot but they do help you.
“It was like £50 for every day you’re in there which isn’t a lot but if you’re in there for 13 weeks it soon adds up.”
The Big Brother reboot has confirmed its prize money and said it is an “incredible amount”.

Ex-Chelsea and England star Wayne Bridge shows off results of hair transplant after go-ahead from Loose Women star wife
WAYNE BRIDGE showed off the results of his hair transplant – after getting the green light from his Loose Women star wife.
Bridge, 44, made his name and fortune after breaking through at Southampton to earn his transfer to Chelsea in 2003.
Wayne Bridge has undergone a hair transplant[/caption] The former footballer got the work done at a top London clinic[/caption] He was given the green light from wife Frankie[/caption]After six years at Stamford Bridge, he joined Manchester City then finished his club career with Reading in 2014.
He also racked up 36 senior England caps, including featuring at the 2002 World Cup.
But since hanging up his boots a decade ago, the former left-back has noticed he has been thinning on top.
And so he opted to get the treatment done to give himself a thicker mop – in turn giving himself a new boost of confidence.
Bridge is married to former Saturdays singer and Loose Women host Frankie Sandford and revealed she was on board with him getting the procedure done.
The ex-footballer headed to a high-end Harley Street clinic – DHI Global – to get the work done.
It involved removing 4,085 hair follicles individually and then replanting them in the balder areas with a special pen – without the need to shave the whole head.
Bridge said: “I had the hair transplant because I wanted to boost my confidence.
CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERS
“I have been suffering from hair loss since my mid-30s and I just felt it would give me a bit of a boost to get it sorted. So many men are getting help with their hair and it is really no big deal.
“I told Frankie what I was doing and she was really supportive.
“She said, ‘Go for it,’ and supports anything that makes me feel better about myself.”
Bridge added: “I used to like wearing my hair long but my thinning hair became more noticeable when I grew it. I thought of just shaving it all off but a better solution was a hair transplant.
“You hear about women having procedures to improve their appearance all the time and it is great that it is no big deal for men now, too.
“It is great that we can all be open about it and hopefully we will inspire more men to seek help. The boost in confidence can be really good for your mental health.”
Bridge revealed he was inspired to get the treatment after a celebrity friend recommended the London specialists, whose treatments start from £3,000 and where cricketer Phil Tufnell went for his new look.
He explained: “I bumped into him at a wedding and his hair looked great.
“He explained that he had gone to DHI because the treatment is so discreet and no one knows you have had it done until all the hair has grown back.
“I wanted the very best treatment in the world with the shortest downtime and that was always going to be DHI.
HAIR WE GO
“You read about patients going abroad for hair transplants but that was never going to be an option for me.
“The best clinics in the world are here and it is reassuring to know that the team is next to Harley Street for the aftercare. Who wants to jump on a flight to check on their hair if something goes wrong?
“What I particularly like about this treatment is that you don’t have to have your entire head shaved.
“They literally pick the donor hairs out and then implant them directly where you have the bald spots with very little fuss.
“There is very little disturbance to the scalp and the final results are completely natural.
“It means the downtime after the operation is minimal and I can quickly get back to doing what I love, which is staying fit and enjoying time with my family.”
Bridge tied the knot with glamorous Frankie in July 2014 – nine months after their son Parker was born.
Their second son Carter arrived in August 2015.
The ex-footballer appeared in the 2016 series of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and then won the debut season of SAS: Who Dares Wins after trekking a glacier in Chile.
He is also a keen poker player and admitted his style can be “kamikaze” when he appears in tournaments.
