I was on crutches for 8 weeks after £10k BBL surgery – I knew the risks but I don’t regret it

A MUM has told how she ended up on crutches for eight weeks after suffering an excruciating injury during BBL surgery.

Donna Matheson, 33, was self-conscious about her bum and travelled to Marbella in Spain where she spent £10,000 on the controversial cosmetic operation.

The procedure hit headlines last week after Alice Webb died following a ‘liquid’ variation of the procedure.

The mum of five, 33, was the first person to die from the surgery in a UK clinic and two people were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

Model and makeup artist Donna, from Inverness, was aware of the risks but admits she couldn’t have predicted the pain she endured after waking up.

She said: “Recovery was one of the worst experiences of my life and I’m not exaggerating when I say that.

“I heard a lot about recovery, however I’d had previous surgeries and thought it was hyped up to be worse than it was.

“Due to me being so slim I had to get a supercharged BBL which is a small implant with fat grafting over it.

“I had to have two surgeries, I was offered three surgeries for a rib mould too which I declined – which is when they can take your bottom ribs and push them in more to give a snatched waist.

“But due to having an implant I had a torn muscle.”

She added: “As the epidural wore off I started feeling lots of shooting pains up and down my leg. This became severe and the mobility on that side of my body started to go.

“I started to panic. I went abroad for surgery by myself and it’s very scary when you realise something isn’t right.

“They were really good and took me straight for some scans and seen I had a torn muscle from where they put the implant.

“They put a catheter in because I couldn’t walk. I spent seven days face down in a dark room, my mental health was really slipping because I felt so frightened and alone

“I got back to my villa after a week and my mobility was extremely limited. The clinic recommended I stayed for two weeks so I’m glad I had that extra week to get more mobile for dreaded plane journey home.

“I ended up on crutches for eight weeks due to the tear on my muscle and I was close to two months before I could get back to work which is something you really have to think about and budget for.

“You even need to think about simple things like needing someone to dress you every day because have to wear garments for three months.”

Despite the painful recovery process, Donna is delighted with the results and has never been happier with her bum.

But she’s not sure that she’d encourage people to follow her lead in going under the knife.

She said: “Once my mobility started coming back and I felt myself again I started to enjoy the results.

“Everybody says how natural it looks, it doesn’t look like I’ve got a BBL and I now have a  lovely waist hip ratio.

“It looks natural because I was really hip dipped and had no ass whatsoever.

“All my friends have commented to say it’s the first one they’ve seen they think looks okay so I’m really chuffed with my results.

BBL safety tips

If you are considering getting a BBL, there are some key things you can do to ensure that the procedure is as safe as possible.

The first and most important step is to seek out a qualified and experienced medical practitioner.

Here are the key steps to ensure a safe procedure:

  • Verify the practitioner’s credentials: Ensure the surgeon or aesthetic practitioner is properly trained, qualified, and registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) for surgical procedures, or trained in non-surgical aesthetics with a reputable provider, like Harley Academy, for injectable treatments.
  • Ask about their experience: It is essential to choose a practitioner who has extensive experience with BBLs. Ask how many procedures they have performed and about their complication rates.
  • Ask about materials used: For liquid BBLs, check that only UK or European approved fillers are used and that strict hygiene standards are followed
  • Clinic safety standards: The procedure should be carried out in a regulated medical facility that meets high standards of hygiene, has proper equipment, and can handle emergencies. For surgical BBLs, this means a licensed surgical centre with proper accreditation.
  • Realistic expectations and clear communication: A responsible practitioner will take the time to fully explain the risks and manage expectations. Patients should always be informed about both the best and worst outcomes, and there should be a comprehensive discussion of the aftercare and recovery process.
  • Avoid cut-price deals: Cheaper is not better when it comes to cosmetic procedures. Be wary of low-cost deals or practitioners offering services without proper medical oversight. This can often be a red flag for unsafe or unregulated treatments.
  • Be open about your medical history: During your consultation, you should be open about your medical history and medications and ask detailed questions about the procedure.
  • Be diligent about aftercare: Following all aftercare instructions and going to follow-up appointments can help prevent problems and ensure a safe recovery.
  • Be wary about travelling abroad: Following all aftercare instructions and going to follow-up appointments can help prevent problems and ensure a safe recovery.

“I can wear a bikini now and not feel self conscious.”

Donna added: “I heard about the woman who died and I believe it was from a liquid BBL which is actually broadcast as the ‘safe option’ alternative to a BBL.

“I really think the wording has to change now as it’s not the safe alternative to a BBL.

“Everyone has to have it drummed into them that none of the options are completely safe, you need to go above and beyond to search your surgeon and their qualifications and experience.

“You need to thrash everything out and weigh the pros and cons. I do feel great and healthy but I will always remembered those days being face down in a hospital.

“For somebody thinking about it in future I’d think twice before having anything from anybody who isn’t fully qualified with a large string of patients and reviews.”

Abandoned ‘ghost stadium’ of EFL club given new lease of life with fans given once-in-a-lifetime chance to play on pitch

SUPPORTERS longing for yesteryear can step back into the past on Friday as a “Ghost ground” re-opens its doors.

Millmoor was the home of League One Rotherham United for 83 years until 2008.

Following a row over rent, the Millers moved out as their famous old ground was left desolate and decrepit.

Rotherham now play in the 12,000-seater New York Stadium, which opened in 2012, and is situated just yards away.

However, it is impossible to miss their former home on any visit to Rotherham and now you can take a look inside it from 2pm.

After years of being known as the “Ghost ground”, long-standing landlords, the Booth family, have overseen the refurbishment to restore it to its former glory and bring it back to life.

And now the doors will be opened for visitors to see the old stands, take a walk on the pitch – which is now being put into use for hire by local teams – and reminisce of the glory days.

A host of the club’s heroes will also be in attendance to add to the nostalgic event.

Which is in conjunction with Millers legend John Breckin, 71, as part of his dementia awareness work.

A spokesman said: “This is a chance for older Millers supporters to re-visit a place where they spent so many happy times and for the younger generation.

“Who have no doubt heard all about Millmoor, to get a better idea of what it is actually like.

“Hopefully, there will be a good turnout.”

Millmoor was first used in the 1890s when it was used by the Rotherham Church Institute in the Sheffield Association League, before then being used by Rotherham County before United.

It was home to seven promotions campaigns, eight relegations and also staged the first League Cup final in 1961 when Rotherham beat Aston Villa 2-0 in the first leg.

Jhon Duran is the most lethal sub in the Premier League and on course to break Ole Gunnar Solskjaer record

ASTON VILLA star Jhon Duran is fast becoming the Premier League’s most lethal super sub.

The 20-year-old striker netted a stunner off the bench to sink Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

Duran curled a majestic lob over Manuel Neuer just minutes after replacing Ollie Watkins in the Champions League clash.

The Colombian has developed a reputation for being a game-changer for Unai Emery’s men.

After a slow start to life in the West Midlands, Duran has come into his own over the past year.

And stats show he is on his way to becoming as effective as iconic impact sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Since his debut in January 2023, Duran has scored more goals as a substitute than any other Premier League player.

He’s netted 10 goals off the bench in that period – two more than Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard and three more than Newcastle’s Callum Wilson.

So far this season, Duran already has the most goals (5) as a sub out of any player across the big five European leagues.

It means he’s potentially on track to break the all-time Prem record, set by Chelsea’s Mikael Forssell on loan at Crystal Palace back in 2002.

Forsell scored 9 times off the bench that campaign, with Duran needing another 5 sub goals between now and May to take the record.

Also on the list is Man Utd legend Solskjaer, who built his career around dramatic late goals.

Solskjaer scored 8 goals as a sub during United’s treble-winning season in 1999, most memorably in the Champions League final against Bayern.

On the all-time Prem list of substitute goals, Ole is third with 29 behind Jermain Defoe and Olivier Giroud (both 31).

Duran arrived from MLS side Chicago Fire in 2022 for a fee of £14.75 million.

Boss Emery had high praise for his matchwinner after a historic night at Villa Park.

But he admitted the striker had occasionally become “impatient” with his bit-part role.

Emery said: “He arrived here two years ago and he is young, his potential is huge.

“Sometimes he has been impatient and I need to speak to him as a person and connect to him as a person.

“As well as a player to try to let him play, putting him on the field because his talent is there and the capacity to help us.”

a poster showing the most sub goals by premier league players of all time

And the Villa boss revealed it was no accident that Duran knew Bayern stopper Neuer would be off his line for the winner.

He added: “This is the talent that some players have and when Jhon Duran has the ball he is scoring quickly.

“In the analysis we have of [Bayern], we were speaking of how usually the position of Neuer is always high.”

Quarter of a million Brits to be prescribed weight loss jabs for free on the NHS in new drive to crush obesity crisis

A QUARTER of a million more Brits will be put on NHS fat jabs in the next three years under plans to crush England’s obesity crisis.

Super-strong tirzepatide, which can help slimmers lose a quarter of their body weight, is set to be rolled out to 1.6million people over the next 12 years.

Health chiefs are planning a splurge on the weight loss injections, which have previously been tightly controlled for only the most in need, and in short supply.

The most severely overweight will get the first prescriptions and then the NHS plans to work down through lower risk patients.

It could be prescribed online to avoid overwhelming GP surgeries.

The drugs mimic hormones that make you feel full, squashing your appetite so you eat fewer calories and lose weight rapidly.

This will be a powerful part of our arsenal to tackle obesity

Professor Sir Stephen PowisNHS England

Tirzepatide, known by brand name Mounjaro, is one of the most effective and costs about £122 per patient per month.

In a trial, users lost an average of 21 per cent of their body weight in nine months and 27 per cent after two years.

Professor Sir Stephen Powis, medical director for NHS England, said: “This drug will be a powerful part of our arsenal to tackle obesity.

“This phased rollout will ensure those with the greatest clinical need can access it as a priority.

“With the sheer number of people potentially eligible for these treatments and GP teams already delivering record numbers of appointments, the NHS is developing a range of community-based and digital services to provide weight loss drugs.”

Weight loss reduces health risk

Three in 10 adults in England – about 16million people – are obese and at higher risk of cancer, dementia and heart diseases.

The NHS’ plans to introduce the drug over a 12-year period have been floated in a consultation by spending watchdog the National Institutes of Health and Care Excellence.

They would begin by prescribing to people with a body mass index (BMI) higher than 40 and three or more related health problems.

NICE chief executive Dr Sam Roberts said: “Our independent committee found this medicine to be both effective and good value for money.

“Its use will help people living with obesity to lose weight, and as a result substantially reduce the risk that they will develop serious health problems.

“Because of the very large number of people who could potentially benefit, NICE accepts that a phased roll out is required.”

Everything you need to know about fat jabs

Weight loss jabs are a hot media topic at the moment, with hundreds of success stories from people who shed the pounds.

In March 2023, the NHS announced it would make Wegovy, a drug made by Danish firm Novo Nordisk, available on prescription to thousands of obese Brits.

It contains the drug semaglutide, which is said to have helped reality star Kim Kardashian and Twitter boss Elon Musk lose weight.

Wegovy, which helped a third of people reduce their weight by 20 per cent in trials, is now available from pharmacies like Boots.

How do they work?

The jabs work by suppressing your appetite, making you eat less and therefore lose weight.

To do this, semaglutide mimics the role of a natural hormone, called GLP-1.

GLP-1 is part of the signalling pathway that tells your body you have eaten, and prepares it to use the energy that comes from your food.

London GP and founder of wellgoodwellbeing.com, Dr Zoe Watson, said: “Your body naturally produces an appetite regulating hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1.

“These jabs work by regulating your appetite, which can lead to eating fewer calories and losing weight.”

Aren’t they diabetes drugs?

Semaglutide, the active drug in Wegovy, was originally sold under the name Ozempic specifically for diabetes patients.

But people started noticing it helped suppress their appetites, stopping them eating as much and helping them shed the pounds.

Novo Nordisk then developed Wegovy, which contains the same chemical but at higher doses specifically to aid weight loss.

Wegovy is not prescribed for diabetes patients.

Can I get them?

Wegovy is offered on prescription to obese adults given specialist weight loss treatment.

The NHS currently also offers a similar drug called Saxenda, or liraglutide.

Both are only available throught specialist weight management services, which means you have to be referred to clinics led by experts.

GPs can’t prescribe them on their own, Dr Watson said.

The jabs have to be taken as part of an overall programme to help with lifestyle changes and psychological support to get the best effect from the medication prescribed.

Despite being approved for use, supply has been constrained due to huge global demand.

Are there any risks?

Like all medicines, the jabs do not come without side effects.

Around half of people taking the drug experience gut issues, including sickness, bloating, acid reflux, constipation and diarrhoea.

Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP and clinical consultant at patient.info, said: “One of the more uncommon side effects is severe acute pancreatitis, which is extremely painful and happens to one in 500 people.”

Other uncommon side effects include altered taste, kidney problems, allergic reactions, gallbladder problems and hypoglycemia.

What other options are there?

Mounjaro (brand name for tirzepatide) also came onto the market in early 2024.

Like Wegovy, tirzepatide stems from a drug originally designed to treat diabetes.

The weekly injection helped overweight people drop more than two stone in 18 months.

It is available with to order with a prescription online from pharmacies including Superdrug and LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor.

It works in a similar way to Wegovy and Saxenda, but is more effective.

Dr Mitra Dutt from LloydsPharmacy says: “Based on clinical trials, 96 per cent of people were able to lose more than five per cent of their body fat using Mounjaro. In similar trials, 84 per cent of people lost more than five per cent of their body weight on Wegovy, and 60 per cent on Saxenda.

“Mounjaro works by activating two hormonal receptors (GIP and GLP-1), which enhance insulin production, improve insulin sensitivity, and work to decrease food intake.”
