Your lawn will be healthier than ever after winter if three ‘TLC’ tasks are done now

TEMPERATURES dipped below freezing in parts of the UK this morning – with more frost on the way.

Braemar in Aberdeenshire recorded a chilly -4.1C overnight, while Bala in in Gwynedd, Wales experienced -0.1C.

But there’s still time to get essential gardening jobs done this month.

Steven Walley, a gardening and decking expert from London Stone, says autumn is the best time to complete any outstanding gardening jobs before winter sweeps in.

“This will help to keep your garden looking great – while being low-maintenance – over the colder months”, he insists.

And he revealed that there are three ‘TLC’ tasks you should be doing now to make sure your lawn is looking healthy and strong by spring.

He says: “By the end of the summer season, our lawns might be looking a little worse for wear due to hot, dry weather – or even increased use.

“As we look ahead to autumn, the damp conditions are ideal for carrying out some simple lawn-care tasks, helping our grass to recover over the winter period.”

He continues: “Rake your lawn to remove debris, old grass clippings and moss from the soil, to help your lawn soak up water better.

“Your lawn might look a bit patchy afterwards, but this will recover and grow better as a result.

“After this, mow the lawn and aerate the soil by spiking the lawn with a garden fork to improve the movement of air and water among the grass. This will help the lawn withstand drought or water logging better.

“Most lawns can recover well from summer without any feeding, but if your lawn is in need of some extra TLC, use a feed specifically formulated for autumnal application, as this will encourage root growth throughout the winter.”

And there are six other must-do jobs you should be completing before the end of the month too.

According to Steven, it’s the perfect time to clean and protect your decking, as well as packing away garden furniture.

He also encourages homeowners to “protect their patio” by regularly sweeping and cleaning it over the colder months.

Turning to more traditional gardening, Steven also recommends tackling weeds now as well as creating sheltered spots for plants.

He says: “Any weeds should be extracted in the autumn months, as this is when many common weeds start to produce seeds. If treated now, these weeds can’t re-seed, helping to reduce the amount of weeds that crop up in spring.

“To remove weeds in your patio paving, pull the weed out by the root – rather than removing the leafy part – as this will ensure an effective removal.

“The colder months aren’t the peak season for weed growth, but it’s still important to stay on top of prevention. Stay on top of sweeping your patio to prevent seeds from settling, to reduce weed growth.”

He adds: “If you have potted plants, you should bring them inside or put them in a sheltered location to help protect them over the colder months.

“However, if your plants are in flower beds or sleepers, it may be more difficult to keep them safe from the bleak weather conditions.

“The best thing to do is make sure that all plants and flowers have been pruned with all dead leaves and branches removed – this will help to keep them flowering for longer.

“Keep plants happy over the winter months by reducing your watering schedule – just make sure your plants don’t get too dry.”

And finally, the gardening and decking pro insists people should be planting new bulbs right up to November.

He says: “Autumn is the best time to plant bulbs, for a colourful and vibrant garden come March.

“There are lots of different bulbs you can plant, including daffodils, which will likely be the first to appear.

“You can also plant tulip and hyacinth bulbs in the autumn months. Just make sure to choose the right time to plant different bulbs. For example, daffodils should be planted at the end of September, but tulips shouldn’t be planted until November.

“When you are planting your bulbs, make sure to dig deep enough. Around two times the depth of the bulb itself is recommended to ensure good drainage. Don’t forget to pick a spot that is guaranteed to get sunshine too.”

Conor McGregor ‘asked to leave’ Arsenal clash against PSG with UFC star whisked away by security

CONOR McGREGOR was asked to leave the Emirates pitch after Arsenal’s win over Paris Saint-Germain.

The UFC superstar, 36, was in attendance at the Gunners’ 2-0 victory in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

After the game he went onto the field and posed for photos with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka.

He was even seen jokingly practicing some MMA moves on Arsenal and England star Saka.

However, The Irish Mirror are now reporting McGregor was not an official guest at the stadium.

He had acquired a ticket through a third-party source, before he left his seat and breezed onto the pitch at full-time.

After several minutes on the turf, security told him to get off the field.

And McGregor’s presence at the game was made even more bizarre due to the fact he is a Manchester United fan.

In 2022, he told The Red Devils’ website: “I was more a player than a watcher back then [when I was a child], but Manchester United was my team.

“It was only the other day I came across an old picture of myself wearing that infamous grey United jersey, which I bought with my [First Holy] Communion money at eight years of age.

“I see my son when I look at that photo. I’d love to know where it is now. A truly ‘Notorious’ football jersey!

“I was attracted to the success and winning mentality of the club and people surrounded by United. Irish legends like Denis Irwin and Roy Keane were dedicated to their craft and had that winning mentality.”

McGregor confirmed last month his return to the octagon will come in 2025 – nearly four years since he broke his leg in his last fight against Dustin Poirier.

He told DAZN: “It will be 2025. We will see.

“My opponent that I had scheduled… it is what it is. I take it on board and rock on.

“My job is to go to the gym and be in shape, whenever it is and wherever it is. I will be 100 per cent ready.”

The Apprentice’s Tom Pellereau reveals secret to 13-year partnership with Lord Sugar after BBC star ditched 8 winners

THE Apprentice’s Tom Pellereau has revealed the secret to his 13-year partnership with Lord Sugar – after the BBC star ditched at least eight other winners.

Tom, 45, was the first candidate to secure a £250,000 investment prize from Lord Sugar – rather than a job at one of his companies – when he won in 2011.

It was money well spent, as Tom has gone on to build a multi-million pound business and a hugely successful Stylideas brand.

Last month, Tom launched seven new products and Lord Sugar was there to support him in person.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online afterwards, Tom revealed all about his partnership with the 77-year-old business icon, and how it had managed to be one of the few to achieve longevity from the show.

He said: “So we have a board meeting at least every two months for a couple of hours.

“He loves products. I always have to take the latest items along.

“He loves touching them, feeling them, giving them a bit of feedback, and he especially likes the packaging stage and the beginning of the marketing stage.

“When he saw the latest packaging of the different ones, he was like, ‘These are really good. You know, this is really coming together nicely.’

“He does usually get very hands on with the products and trying them out.”

While Lord Sugar was impressed by Tom’s latest efforts, he isn’t afraid to be blunt when required.

He explained: “He has always put a lot of pressure on me to succeed.
He’s been like that kind of headmaster that just gives you a hard time.

“And people sort of say, ‘you know, he does quite like you’. And you’re like, ‘Oh, he’s got a very funny way of showing it’. But we’ve had some ups and some downs.”

Despite this, their partnership has endured much longer than many other winners of The Apprentice.

The Mirror revealed earlier this year – before the latest series – that only two of the last 10 winners were still in business with Lord Sugar.

They are boxing gym owner Marnie Swindells, who won last year, and 2013 winner Dr Leah Totton, who runs cosmetics clinics.

Meanwhile some of those who have ended their working relationship with Lord Sugar include 2022 winner Harpreet Kaur, 2016 winner Alana Spencer and joint 2017 winners Sarah Lynn and James White.

I think there was less synergy

Tom Pellereau

Discussing why he thinks he has bucked the trend, Tom said: “I think it’s really helped me that I do products, and that was his origin.

“You know, he started with car aerials, car stereos, then consumer electronics, so he really likes products and he has a lot to offer me in terms of helping with retailer dealings and with suppliers and that sort of thing.

“I think some of the other businesses, which were a bit different, I think maybe there was less synergy, so to speak.”

The Apprentice biggest moments

THE Apprentice has been a fan favourite ever since it burst onto the box in 2005.

Here we take a look at five of the biggest moments over the years on the hit BBC One show.

Tim Campbell – Former London Underground transport manager Tim Campbell won the first series of the reality show in 2005. He is now one of Lord Sugar’s aides on the show.

Sarah Lynn and James White – For the first and only time in the show’s history, both finalists were crowned winners in 2017.

Amy Anzel – Season 16’s fired candidate Amy Anzel was BANNED from the final celebration show, after a tit-for-tat exchange over Lord Sugar’s mocking tweets.

Michelle Dewberry – Telecoms consultant Michelle Dewberry won the second series of the show in 2006. However, after winning a six-figure job with Lord Sugar she lasted just four months before she sensationally quit.

Selena Waterman-Smith – We’re used to tensions running high in the boardroom, but in 2015 a disagreement between two candidates spilled over – for the first time – into a physical bust-up. Events manager Selina Waterman-Smith was given a verbal warning by show bosses for her role in an off-camera scrap with Charleine Wain.

Tom has also had to juggle growing his business with his personal life, which has changed a lot since he won The Apprentice.

He said: “It’s been hard work. I have had children. So I’ve had two children in that time and I wasn’t even married at the beginning.

“So life has been incredible for those 13 years.”
