Interest rates could be cut ‘more aggressively’ by Bank of England, says Andrew Bailey

THE Bank of England could be “more aggressive” in cutting interest rates, Governor Andrew Bailey has said.

He claimed that if inflation continues to be held in check then the Bank could “be more activist” in lowering rates.

The news will be a boost to borrowers and particularly the 1.6million homeowners who need to remortgage later this year.

Last month Mr Bailey had suggested the opposite when saying that interest rates would fall “gradually”.

Money markets now have a near 100 per cent bet that the Bank will cut rates from the current five per cent to 4.75 per cent at its meeting next month.

However, the Pound fell sharply yesterday — with its biggest one-day slump in 18 months — following Mr Bailey’s comments to The Guardian.

It slipped 1.08 per cent against the dollar to $1.31, while dropping by 0.96 per cent against the euro to €1.19.

Valentin Marinov, head of Group-of-10 FX strategy at Credit Agricole, said: “The best days of the pound rally may be behind us.”

Keir Starmer vows to ignore climate ‘extremists’ instead carve a ‘third way’ to protect planet and livelihoods

SIR Keir Starmer today vows to ignore the climate “extremists” and instead carve a “third way” which protects both the planet and people’s livelihoods.

The PM is announcing a £22billion cash injection over 25 years for “game-changing” carbon capture technology in Merseyside and Teesside.

He said the record investment would “reignite our industrial heartlands”, directly creating 4,000 jobs, while putting Britain on a “sensible” path to Net Zero.

Carbon capture pulls the emissions from burning fuels and traps them permanently underground.

While backed by groups including the Climate Change Committee, protest radicals such as Extinction Rebellion say it is not a proper solution.

Greenpeace last night criticised the move, calling it a “second-rate solution” that is “going to extend the life of planet-heating oil and gas production”.

But in a direct rebuke, Sir Keir writes on this page: “I know some like Extinction Rebellion will lecture me on carbon capture . . . they’ll say it isn’t the right choice.”

And warning that industries employing tradesmen including sparkies and brickies would go to the wall without action, he insisted: “It’s working people who come first.”

Ministers expect the plan to attract £8billion of private investment and indirectly support up to 55,000 jobs.

Officials said carbon capture would remove 8.5million tonnes of carbon emissions each year, with the first carbon dioxide being stored from 2028.

The PM will today visit Liverpool with Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband to announce the ambitious plans.

She showed off the deep bronze tan from her holiday in Ibiza and gave a glimpse of her thigh with her dress’s daring split.

Christine’s tiny waist was cinched by the dress’s corseted body, which had a touch of sparkle along the chest line.

The mum-of-three flaunted her figure days ago on her trip to the White Isle.

It looked like she was soaking up the sun with close pal and model Roxxxan.

She shared a silhouette of two people cosying up on the beach and another shot revealed matching bracelets with her holiday buddy, whose arm looked strikingly similar to Roxxxan’s.

Former Real Housewives of Cheshire star Christine recently revealed she is dating again following her split from husband Paddy, 51.

Appearing on Loose Women, she said: “I am dating again. With terms and conditions.

“I am not cooking, that’s the number one rule, I’m not doing the cooking it’s not for me.”

Opening up about her mystery romance, she added: “I met them on my birthday through mutual friends and we’ve been dating since June.

“It’s someone I know. I wasn’t thinking anything at the time but we kept in touch and it’s so nice and laidback.

“After having a relationship in the public eye for so long I’m not sure I want the relationship to be public. I’ve only ever known what it was like to have a relationship that’s in the public. This is nice.

“I’ve been really open and honest from the beginning about where I’m at and they’re ok with that.”

Last month Christine enjoyed a night out with DJ Roxxxan and shared snaps as they hit the town together in London.
