Coronation Street legend quits after 20 years – and reveals he secretly left five months ago

A CORONATION Street legend has quit after 20 years working on the soap.

Their first contribution to the long-running ITV drama came in 2004.

The beloved personality first joined the team in 2004 and went onto write over 330 scripts[/caption]

Writer Jonathan Harvey went on to pen 331 Coronation Street scripts for the likes of Sally Dynevor, Helen Worth and William Roache.

Now, the personality has announced his departure, just as his final instalments made it to air on October 2.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote: “My last episode of Corrie is on tonight. Paul’s funeral.

“Jan McVerry’s written the first half and me the second. Sure it’ll all be plain sailing and everyone’ll get on and it’ll all be lovely,” along with a string of eye emojis.

One devastated fan wrote back to the writer, saying: “I was a complete basket case!!!

“What do you mean, your last???? NO, surely not!”

After reading the comment, he then admitted that he actually left the soap five months ago.

However, the scenes that he personally wrote had only just made their way onto the airwaves this week.

Jonathan replied: “I actually left five months ago but it’s shot so far in advance it’s taken til now to air my last one!”

The acclaimed writer also hinted that he would like to return to the cobbles in the future.

Adding: “Needed a break after twenty years. Hopefully I’ll be back!”

Jonathan’s final episodes were dramatic as Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) tried to kiss his former boyfriend Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce).

This was after his late husband Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) passed away before he could properly say goodbye in the hospital.

Aston Villa vs Man Utd preview

Manchester United make the daunting trip to Villa Park on Sunday to take on Unai Emery’s buoyant Aston Villa in the Premier League.

It had already looked a tricky fixture on paper, and now it looks even tougher with the hosts having recorded an amazing 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League midweek.

Confidence couldn’t be much higher for Villa following that result AND four victories in their opening six matches of the campaign to leave them two points behind leaders Liverpool.

Since Unai Emery’s first Premier League game in charge of Aston Villa, only Manchester City (85), Liverpool (84) and Arsenal (81) have picked up more home points than the Villans (74).

The same cannot be said for travelling Manchester United, who’ve failed to win any of their last four in all competitions.

The Red Devils surrendered a two-goal lead against Porto on Thursday, and were eventually thrilled to get a point courtesy of Harry Maguire.

Nevertheless, Erik ten Hag is under huge pressure to deliver a result this weekend, and he’ll have to do it without suspended captain Bruno Fernandes.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League table having lost three of their first six games – and their seven points is their joint fewest after six games of a Premier League season.

Since the Dutchman joined the club in 2022, no Premier League club have conceded three or more goals in a match more times in all competitions than United’s 24.

However, there is a glimmer of hope in that Aston Villa have won just one of their last 25 Premier League home games against Manchester United.

Aston Villa vs Man Utd preview betting tips and predictions

Home bonanza

I see very few reasons why we wouldn’t back Aston Villa to win this contest, and win it handsomely.

The Villans are flying high after their historic win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and should put that confidence to good use against a side who’ve conceded three in each of their last two outings.

Manchester United have lost eight Premier League matches by a margin of three or more goals under Erik ten Hag. They are also without captain Bruno Fernandes, who misses just his eighth league game since joining. United are winless in their last four (D1 L3) and have failed to score in their last three without the Portuguese international.

He’s a big miss for United, who’ve got the FIFTH highest xGC (expected goals conceded) in the division.

Wat goal

If we expect Aston Villa to score a few, then forward Ollie Watkins should be involved.

Only Erling Haaland (65) and Mohamed Salah (60) have scored or assisted more goals in that time. He’s registered the most efforts on target for his side and none of his colleagues can match his xG of 3.50.

Silent Hill 2 remake is the best game in the series since the original Silent Hill 2

SILENT Hill is a horror series fondly remembered by fans as one of the best out there.

What people fail to remember is that the Silent Hill series was full of stinkers, but the series has been memorialised thanks to the strength of the sequel.

Konami
The over-the-shoulder camera doesn’t change the tense atmosphere[/caption]

Silent Hill 2 remains one of the best games of all time, thanks to its dense fog masking the psychological horror elements.

However, these days remakes seem to throw out everything that made the original games moody and mysterious.

Remake means better graphics, and teams want to show off those graphics by putting bright lighting all over the scenery.

You only need to look at the Until Dawn and Horizon Zero Dawn remakes to see how art direction has been thrown out the window.

Silent Hill 2 was groundbreaking in 2001, telling an adult story about trauma and guilt and not trying to hide it.

It puts a mirror up to James Sunderland, and sometimes even the player, and shows the evil inside everyone.

I was not assured that the remake would keep the drama of the original when I saw that I could put Sunderland in a Pyramid Head mask made of pizza boxes.

Fortnite changed the gaming industry with its goofy approach to game design, and it’s not the better for it.

Pizza Head aside, as soon as you actually get into the game, it’s clear that Bloober Team really do understand what made Silent Hill 2 great.

The town of Silent Hill isn’t lit up like a casino, you can’t see the glistening drips rippling off every monster, it’s as mysterious as it’s meant to be.

It’s not perfect. It’s jarring when you see trophies pop up with quirky names. But it’s 2024 and that’s what gamers have come to expect.

There are even improvements for long-time fans. The things that were made to catch you off guard in the original have been slightly altered to spook even experts.

Puzzles have also been changed, and there is more freedom in how you solve them. You no longer have to go step-by-step, you can skip some if you know the path ahead.

Silent Hill 2 thrived thanks to its purposeful camera placement, and we were concerned about the new over-the-shoulder view.

However, thanks to clever level design, Bloober creates the same feeling of unease even with a closer camera.

You still feel trapped as you roam the hospital, apartments, or prisons, and feel relief when you escape and walk back into the foggy streets.

From the performances to the music to the sound design – industrial machinery, sirens, radio static, and dragging chains – everything combines to create an impressively oppressive atmosphere.

It’s worth playing the remake for these changes alone, as it really adds to the tense atmosphere.

Silent Hill 2’s remake brings all the best parts of the original to the forefront, and it’s everything we could have asked for.

Isla Fisher looks all partied out as she takes a tumble outside celeb haunt after divorce from Sacha Baron Cohen

ISLA Fisher looked all partied out as she took a tumble outside a celeb haunt after her divorce from Sacha Baron Cohen.

Isla and Sacha announced the news earlier this year that they had split last yearmonths after The Sun first approached them.

Isla and Sacha announced their divorce earlier this year[/caption]

Ex-Home and Away star Isla, 48, was married to the Borat star for 13 years.

They got engaged in 2004 and married in 2010. They share three children.

But evidently enjoying her post-Sacha life, Isla looked like she was having a great time as she partied at Chiltern Firehouse on Thursday evening – a popular celeb haunt that attracts many a famous face.

The gorgeous star was dressed in a leopard print fluffy coat, which she partnered with a black skirt and dotted black tights.

She was seen heading out of the glam venue clutching onto a masquerade mask over her eyes, as she walked in heels and held onto her black bag.

The star was linking arms with a pal as she walked along, after partying away with fellow actress Sienna Miller.

Sienna was seen in good spirits in the back of a taxi, in an equally as chic black outfit with her blonde locks down.

Isla had to be helped into her taxi, after taking a stumble during the night out and being lifted up by her friend and her security.

She shrouded her face in the back of the cab as she drove away.

Isla’s fun night out on the town comes after Sacha was spotted wearing his wedding ring again back in June.

The 52-year-old actor was spotted without the band on his left hand just a week before.

Meanwhile, Isla has been enjoying time with friends since their split, and headed to Mexico over the summer to celebrate the wedding of her friends Naomi Watts and The Morning show actor Billy Crudup.

All the signs Isla and Sacha had secretly split

The couple have revealed they actually split last year, despite only just revealing their divorce.

Here we look at the signs they had already broken up before revealing their split news:

Social media silence –  Sacha has been absent from Instagram since last Christmas.

Spending time with friends – Isla has been been following that classic post break-up move of spending more time with her girlfriends.

Hidden ring finger – No fans noticed at the time, but in many Instagram shots from this year, Isla has hidden her right hand so her wedding finger was not visible in many shots.

Missing man – The last image Isla shared of her and Sacha prior to the divorce announcement was back in November last year.

read the latest in our showbiz hub written on a purple background

Announcing their split in April Isla and Sacha, who moved to Australia in lockdown after living in LA, were pictured in all-white tennis gear as they penned a statement saying “we forever share in our devotion and love for our children”.

The Sun revealed Isla first approached a divorce lawyer back in 2022.

It is understood the star quietly contacted £550-an-hour Fiona Shackleton — Sir Paul McCartney’s legal expert in his £24million split from Heather Mills. In June 2022, The Sun contacted representatives for Isla and Sacha regarding this, but they denied it.

Sacha, who grew up in Hammersmith, rose to fame in the 1990s with his Ali G character, the infamous spoof wannabe gangster.

He also received rave reviews for his character Borat, a journalist from Kazakhstan, and played the role of flamboyant Austrian fashionista Bruno.

In March, Sacha became embroiled in a dispute with Australian actress Rebel Wilson ahead of the release of her memoir, Rebel Rising.

She likened one actor to a “fourth-grade bully” after working with Sacha on his movie Grimsby.

His lawyers said evidence showed her allegations had “no basis in reality” and were part of a “cynical commercial ploy to promote her book”.

Earlier this year, Isla was seen on US television discussing her marriage to Sacha.

In the awkward interview from February, the actress spoke to Kelly Clarkson on her chat show about her Valentine’s Day plans.

As she chatted about Sacha the Australian star seemed smitten with her husband, despite the fact by this point they had already split up.

Host Kelly asked Isla if she had any Valentine’s Day traditions, to which she replied: “Every year Sacha does give me a card that [says] ‘happy Valentine’s from…’ and then there’s a massive question mark, as if anybody else would… as if I have any other Valentines.”

According to the estranged couple’s statement, they had already split up at the time.

Huge A-list model and actress turned down for role of Cassandra in Only Fools and Horses as she was ‘too hot’ for Rodney

BBC bosses snubbed a huge A-list model and actress for a major role in Only Fools and Horses.

The star auditioned to play Cassandra Parry, who later married Rodney Trotter in the BBC sitcom.

Liz Hurley auditioned but was thought to be “a little too glamourous”[/caption]

Liz Hurley had been in the running for Cassandra, but it wasn’t to be.

The Channel 5 documentary Only Fools and Horses: Secrets and Scandals revealed how she simply didn’t fit the part.

Author Mike Jones explained: “She auditioned for the role and it was felt that perhaps she was probably a little too glamorous for…how can I say it diplomatically?

“Our lanky Trotter brother.”

Had she landed the role, Liz would have starred alongside Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst.

Gwyneth Strong got the part and made her first appearance as Cassandra in 1989.

She continued to play the character on and off, most recently in 2003.

Although Liz didn’t make it to Peckham, she did land a score of other projects.

The now 59-year-old starred in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, playing Vanessa Kensington.

On TV, she starred on E! primetime drama The Royals from 2015 to 2018.

Liz’s character, Helena Henstridge, was a fictitious Queen and member of a royal family.

The actress also played Morgan le Fay in Marvel Comics series Runaways and Diana Payne in teen drama Gossip Girl.

Aside from Liz, other big names have missed out on major Only Fools and Horses roles.

Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent was an early contender to play Del Boy.

Best 80s sitcoms

We take a look at some of the best sitcoms to air on TV in the 80s.

The Simpsons

This satirical depiction of life in the US was developed by Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, and Sam Simon. It first launched in 1989 and has been going ever since as viewers tune in to see the antics of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and the rest of the Springfield residents. With over 35 series making it onto the television airwaves, it has become one of the most famous and long-running television shows in history.

Only Fools And Horses

Widely accepted as one of the best British sitcoms of all time, Only Fools and Horses has made viewers laugh for decades. Seven series of the show were made for the BBC One from 1981 for ten years. Set in working-class Peckham, it starred Sir David Jason in his most famous role as the infamous market trader Derek “Del Boy” Trotter. Nicholas Lyndhurst starred as his younger half-brother, Rodney Trotter. In 2004, it was voted as Britain’s Best Sitcom in a BBC poll.

Full House

The US sitcom Full House was created in 1987 with Bob Saget starring father-of-three Danny Tanner. After his wife died, he called in the help of his brother-in-law Jesse (John Stamos) and best friend Joey (Dave Coulier) to move in and help raise his young daughters, DJ (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and Michelle (Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen). After eight series, the show came to an end before Netflix revived the franchise for a spin-off, Fuller House.

Golden Girls

Seven series aired from 1985 until 1992. It followed Four women – who were previously married – moved in together in a shared apartment in Miami. Together, they faced various struggles and encounter comical situations in their daily lives. Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty starred in roles that short them to superstardom.

Cheers

1982 was the year that saw the inception of Cheers. An eclectic group of people from all different paths of life meet at a bar Cheers. The boston boozer sees the group share their experiences as they work and drank at the establishment. It starred the likes of Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman. Huge names such as Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson and Kirstie Alley also starred in the hit series.

Growing Pains

Dr. Jason Seaver (Alan Thicke) is a psychiatrist who works from home so his wife, Maggie (Joanna Kerns), can resume her career as a journalist. They share three children, Mike (Kirk Cameron), Carol (Tracey Gold), and Ben (Jeremy Miller). This was before their precocious daughter Chrissy (Ashley Johnson) was born. The programme tackled topical issues such as drugs, suicide, peer pressure and alcohol.

In fact, Sir David Jason believed Jim would have been a “much more plausible” casting as Rodney’s brother.

This was due to the film star’s similar height to Nicholas Lyndhurst.

As Jim was unavailable at the time, he passed up the opportunity to portray Del – as had fellow actor Enn Reitel.

He instead played Del’s nemesis Roy Slater in three episodes across eight years.
