Over one thousand pensioners missing out on winter fuel payment to get cash help worth £100s

HUNDREDS of pensioners who will miss out on the winter fuel payment can now apply for cash help worth hundreds of pounds.

Around 10million pensioners will no longer get the payment worth up to £300 after chancellor Rachel Reeves changed the rules for qualifying.

Households missing out on the winter fuel payment could get help from their council[/caption]

From this winter, the payment will be limited to people receiving Pension Credit and other means-tested benefits.

As a result, households are looking for ways to get support with essential costs, like energy bills, throughout the winter.

Some will be able to access help through the Household Support Fund (HSF).

The pot of money has been shared between councils in England who then decide how to distribute it and who is eligible for support.

That means what you are entitled to varies depending on where you live and it can be a bit of a postcode lottery.

The current round of support, worth £421million, is coming to an end on September 30.

But the scheme is being extended until Spring next year, with a further £421million being distributed to authorities across the country.

Milton Keynes council has revealed that it will be offering energy vouchers to struggling households from October.

It said that it will decide on eligibility on a “case by case” basis, but people who are just missing out on eligibility for the winter fuel payment will receive help worth up to £300.

Those whose local authority is Milton Keynes and meet any of the following criteria will be contacted about accessing the support:

  • Local people who are already in financial difficulty
  • Those who fall out of eligibility for Pension Credit and the Winter Fuel Payment

It added that anyone in financial crisis can approach the council for help with the cost of food, energy and essentials.

The Council said it expects around 1,400 pensioners to be eligible.

Once they are contacted, households will need to reply so the council knows how best to send the vouchers.

They will then be sent out within a week of the reply being received.

What is the Winter Fuel Payment?

Consumer reporter Sam Walker explains all you need to know about the payment.

The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual tax-free benefit designed to help cover the cost of heating through the colder months.

Most who are eligible receive the payment automatically.

Those who qualify are usually told via a letter sent in October or November each year.

If you do meet the criteria but don’t automatically get the Winter Fuel Payment, you will have to apply on the government’s website.

You’ll qualify for a Winter Fuel Payment this winter if:

  • you were born on or before September 23, 1958
  • you lived in the UK for at least one day during the week of September 16 to 22, 2024, known as the “qualifying week”
  • you receive Pension Credit, Universal Credit, ESA, JSA, Income Support, Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit

If you did not live in the UK during the qualifying week, you might still get the payment if both the following apply:

  • you live in Switzerland or a EEA country
  • you have a “genuine and sufficient” link with the UK social security system, such as having lived or worked in the UK and having a family in the UK

But there are exclusions – you can’t get the payment if you live in Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Malta, Portugal or Spain.

This is because the average winter temperature is higher than the warmest region of the UK.

You will also not qualify if you:

  • are in hospital getting free treatment for more than a year
  • need permission to enter the UK and your granted leave states that you can not claim public funds
  • were in prison for the whole “qualifying week”
  • lived in a care home for the whole time between 26 June to 24 September 2023, and got Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance

Payments are usually made between November and December, with some made up until the end of January the following year.

Can I get help if I don’t live in Milton Keynes?

To get help, you’ll need to check with your council, as local authorities are in charge of distributing the funding.

To find your local council, use the gov.uk council finder tool.

Once you’ve found your council, there should be information on how to apply on its website.

Each council has a different application process, so the exact details on how to apply will vary depending on where you live.

That means that the eligibility requirements to access the fund could also vary.

Some councils don’t require you to apply for help – if you qualify, they’ll contact you about it instead.

If your council’s website does not provide information, it’s best to call them and ask for more information.

What are other councils offering?

Residents in Blackpool can receive up to £300 in support from the Household Support Fund.

Those living in Bracknell Forest could be eligible for a £315 cash grant.

Low-income households in Cambridgeshire can apply for a financial award of £110 per household.

East Devon District Council is offering a one-off payment of £100 to households receiving housing benefit or council tax reduction.

Cheshire East Council is also offering struggling families £500 grants to fight the cost of living.

To find out what’s on offer from your council, visit gov.uk/find-local-council.

What energy bill help is available?

THERE'S a number of different ways to get help paying your energy bills if you're struggling to get by.

If you fall into debt, you can always approach your supplier to see if they can put you on a repayment plan before putting you on a prepayment meter.

This involves paying off what you owe in instalments over a set period.

If your supplier offers you a repayment plan you don’t think you can afford, speak to them again to see if you can negotiate a better deal.

Several energy firms have grant schemes available to customers struggling to cover their bills.

But eligibility criteria varies depending on the supplier and the amount you can get depends on your financial circumstances.

For example, British Gas or Scottish Gas customers struggling to pay their energy bills can get grants worth up to £2,000.

British Gas also offers help via its British Gas Energy Trust and Individuals Family Fund.

You don’t need to be a British Gas customer to apply for the second fund.

EDF, E.ON, Octopus Energy and Scottish Power all offer grants to struggling customers too.

Thousands of vulnerable households are missing out on extra help and protections by not signing up to the Priority Services Register (PSR).

The service helps support vulnerable households, such as those who are elderly or ill, and some of the perks include being given advance warning of blackouts, free gas safety checks and extra support if you’re struggling.

Get in touch with your energy firm to see if you can apply.

Then the medics will make a call on if they think I can continue dancing.....I am still really hopeful that I’ll be able to dance this weekend. So fingers crossed… - https://www.instagram.com/p/DATvxdZOspM/?hl=en

Nick will find out this afternoon if he can dance with Luba on Saturday night
BBC

Last night The Sun revealed DIY SOS presenter Nick was still in the dark over whether or not he’ll be able to dance on Saturday night.

After training all day yesterday with Luba Mushtuk, Nick took to Instagram to give fans an update.

He said: “I’ve just got out of soaking in the bath after a day’s training, which went very well.

“My shoulder is repairing very well. I saw a great physio today that’s helped enormously.

“So I get another day’s training tomorrow. The decision will be made tomorrow afternoon, whether I can actually compete on Saturday.

“I’m doing my level best to get there, keeping my fingers crossed. So hopefully see.”

Last night an insider told The Sun: “Nick is desperate to carry on and is insisting he is fine to perform but the BBC are naturally wary.

“If Nick continues and does more damage to himself in the long run it puts them in a tricky position. His health comes first but Nick is pleading with them to continue.”

He spent hours in a rehearsal studio with Luba to try to prove he could still perform — despite being in a sling.

A source revealed he will have little time to practise if he is cleared.

They added added: “Nick needs to learn a whole routine, he has barely any time at all.

“If he is cleared he will need to learn quickly. Luba is an amazing teacher and she is confident they can do it. But, ultimately, it might get to a point that the BBC just put their foot down.”

Darts could be set for major broadcasting change with Luke Littler and Co moving from Sky Sports

DARTS could be set for a major broadcasting with stars like Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen moving away from Sky Sports.

The broadcaster has been airing PDC darts action ever since the inaugural World Matchplay in 1994.

Since then, the sport has grown into a money-spinning giant after spawning new heroes like Littler and Luke Humphreys.

But PDC king Barry Hearn has now thrown the future of darts on Sky into doubt.

The broadcaster’s contract to show PDC darts expires next year.

And while Hearn is grateful to Sky for keeping faith for the past two decades, he feels his organisation deserves a better deal.

The supremo claims that other sports shown by Sky get a great slice of the pie.

Littler pocketed £500,000 for his performances at the World Championship this year.

In comparison, Dennis Priestly only received £16,000 when he won the same tournament in 1994.

But Hearn feels his current stable of darts stars need to be getting a bigger reward for their work.

CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERS

He said: “(Deal expiring?) Handy, that’s very handy. You know, timing is the essence of everything, isn’t it?

“Listen, we owe Sky a massive, massive debt. They stuck with us in the early days, and loyalty is a big part of our business.

“But, also, I have a responsibility to players to maximise their earnings.

“There’s going to be some interesting conversations. I really hope Sky raise the ante, understand what they’ve built. What it’s worth.

“Compare us to anyone else. Show me what you pay rugby union, league, golf, and tell me why I don’t get the same or more.

“It’s my job, a passion, and I’m building something that is my own legacy for when I’m not around.

“I would like the darts players in 50 years’ time to raise a glass to me. Is that big-headed? I don’t really care if it is, because I know I’m doing a good job.

“Everybody’s got to do well out of this deal, it has got to work for everyone, and I hope it’s Sky because they deserve it because of the work they put on.

“But, respect. Just give us respect and we’ll be fine. We’ll be fine and we’ll deliver value on a global scale you’ve not seen before.”

HER wedding is a couple of months away.

And Millie Radford is getting the final bits organised before the day she says “I do” to fiance Harley Passmore.

And it costs from £9,000 to get married there[/caption]

Mum-of-22 Sue Radford took to her Instagram Stories to share an inside look at Wennington Hall in Lancashire, where Millie will be tying the knot.

“Spent a lovely afternoon talking wedding prep at the wedding venue,” Sue wrote, over a picture of one of the stunning lounges inside the venue, which only opened in spring this year.

“So exciting!” she added, tagging Millie, Harley and her husband Noel.

Wennington Hall is situated between the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Ribble Valley, and has four locations from which couples can choose for their civil ceremonies.

It has capacity for 140 guests in the main hall for the wedding meal, and can accommodate 250 guests in the evening.

It’s also been crowned the North East’s Hotel Venue of the Year, North West’s Events Team of the Year and Best Venue in Lancashire.

But it isn’t cheap to get married there, with packages starting at a whopping £8,995.

After the big day, the wedding party have the option to stay at the venue, while new husband and wife Millie and Harley will undoubtedly be in the Honeymoon Suite.

The visit to the wedding venue comes after Sue revealed she was struggling to find the perfect outfit for Millie’s big day.

“Booked in my next hair appointment today for Millie and Harley’s wedding in just over nine weeks’ time,” she wrote on Instagram.

“So EXCITED but I’m really struggling to find a mother of the bride outfit I love, so if anyone has any recommendations, I’d love for you to share please.”

While Sue said she usually goes for Phase Eight dresses as she loves their options, she added that she wants to go for “something a bit different” for this occasion.

“But it has to be petite which is so difficult to find!” Sue sighed.

Bride-to-be Millie also shared Sue’s post on her own Instagram Stories, as she urged fans: “Please comment your favourite place to shop MOB dresses!”

While Sue hasn’t revealed the recommendations she received from her followers as yet, Karen Millen, Coast, Hobbs and Oasis all do petite occasion wear, so are likely to have been suggested.

Millie Radford's relationship timeline

Millie is the seventh child and third daughter of parents-of-22 Sue and Noel Radford.

She shot to fame when the family landed their own Channel 5 show, 22 Kids and Counting, in 2018.

Millie got pregnant for the first time aged 18, and welcomed daughter Ophelia into the world in September 2020.

Millie is no longer with Ophelia’s father, whose identity remains a secret, as they broke up not long after she got pregnant.

The reality star opened up about her relationship with him and said: “He just wasn’t happy to step up and be a dad so he’s never been named.”

On February 20, 2022, she welcomed her second child, a son called Chester.

Millie kept her pregnancy secret until her due date and in March 2022, she opened up about Chester’s birth in a question time “catch up” on her Instagram stories.

She also identified Chester’s dad for the first time, revealing he was her secret boyfriend Harley Passmore.

In May 2023, Millie revealed she was expecting another child with her partner.

Her baby, a daughter named Jade, was born in September 2023.

In April 2024, Millie excitedly told fans Harley had asked her to marry him during a trip to Disneyland in Florida.

In July, mum Sue let slip that Millie and Harley will be tying the knot before the end of the year, and even shared a snap of the bride-to-be looking at potential wedding dresses.

Sue is believed to be around 5ft tall, and previously admitted she sometimes shops in the kids’ section at stores like Primark in a bid to find outfits that fit her petite frame.

Millie and Harley got engaged earlier this year, when the dad of two of her three children popped the question at Disneyland.

The moment was special for Millie on more than one occasion, as she revealed Harley dropped the ring as he was overcome with nerves.
