CarolinaEast to postpone elective procedures due to flooding at medical plant in western NC

NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) — Hurricane Helene is continuing to cause problems across North Carolina, some not even directly related to weather.

To conserve IV fluids for life-threatening emergencies, CarolinaEast Health System is postponing select elective procedures effective on October 11. They say that this is a necessary decision due to the nationwide fluid shortage due to flooding at the Baxter medical manufacturing plant in the western part of North Carolina, where Hurricane Helene left part of its biggest impact.

According to CarolinaEast Health System, the Baxter facility in North Cove, N.C., provides 60% of the nation’s IV fluids.
