Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya demolished the women’s world record by almost two minutes on Sunday as she won the Chicago Marathon in 2:09:57.
The 30-year-old Chepngetich became the first three-time women’s winner of the Chicago race, breaking the previous world record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa last year in Berlin.
Meanwhile, John Korir of Kenya won the men’s Chicago Marathon title after running a personal best of two hours, two minutes and 43 seconds.
The 27-year-old claimed his first major marathon victory as he finished ahead of Ethiopia’s Mohamed Esa and another Kenyan, Amos Kipruto.
