Boss’ “Tone-deaf” Email After Employees Quit Ignites Debate on Toxic Workplaces

Boss's 'Tone-deaf' Email following the resignation of three employees sparks a heated debate about toxic work environments.

When an employee quits a job, it is not received well by their superiors in most cases. However, there are exceptions with some bosses who are supportive of their employee’s decision to change jobs in pursuit of better career opportunities.

A similar case came to light when three employees quit their jobs to seek better opportunities. However, their boss was not able to digest their actions, and what followed was widely shared on social media and has sparked outrage among netizens. It also brought into focus the toxic environment which often affects the workplace.

The boss in response to the resignation sent an explosive ‘tone-deaf’ email to the employees demanding a three-month notice period, 30 hours of overtime per week, and a salary reduction which has since gone viral and led to outrage among netizens. The email also detailed how the employees could not quit until a replacement was found and they were trained to the resigning employees’ skill levels.

The long and tone-deaf email was posted by the handle @quitbytext on Threads, and the rants by the manager left the netizens both amused and at the same time ignited a huge debate on toxic workplaces.

The employees had mentioned in their resignation letter that they were leaving for better opportunities. This was questioned by the manager who contended that they were all paid fair wages. In a hilarious twist, the manager also lamented the fact that because of the triple resignation, he will have to miss a band recital because he will be searching for replacements.

In the email, the manager stated,

“Your ‘better opportunities’ (doubtful. We pay you all fair wages) are worth affecting your team members’ quality of life? I have children and instead of being at their band recital this week, I will have to be sitting at work posting job offers on Indeed instead. This is outrageous. You all need to speak amongst yourselves and plan these things out so you don’t leave a company high and dry all at once. The lack of consideration from employees I previously had a different impression of is astounding,”

The matter did not end there and the boss saved the final rap on the knuckles in the end. He concluded by stating,

“The new rule in our employee handbook will be updated to now require a 3-month notice since that’s how long it took to train you. You will give 3 months’ notice and train your replacement in the meantime, and your three months’ notice will serve as your consent for your base pay to be lowered by $6 per hour. You can thank your insubordinates for this. You can also thank them for the extra 30 hours of overtime per week you will be assigned until I find new hires and they are fully trained,”

Netizens on learning of the incident reacted in anger. One netizen wrote,

“And now we know why three people quit at once in an coordinated move. Someone should send this to the local labor board,”

‘Tone-deaf’ Email Ignites Huge Debate

The harsh email has ignited a huge debate about toxic workplaces and how they affect the team morale, health, and economic well-being of their families. What irked netizens most was the unscheduled workload in the form of 30 hours of overtime per week, added work pressure to train the fresh recruits with no extra financial benefits. Worse, the workers were also subjected to a wage cut which was like rubbing salt into their wounds. Many netizens also reasoned that the problem was not with the company but with the boss and it is also possible that the employees were forced to quit en masse due to their unreasonable boss.
