Authorities investigating possible arson spree in San Fernando Valley

Police and fire officials are looking into a series of fires that were possibly set on purpose in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley overnight.

Video footage obtained by KTLA shows several fires at several different locations, including a fully engulfed pickup truck parked in front of the Sherman Oaks Martin Pollard Branch Library on Moorpark Street early Monday morning.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly, but not before the fire tore through the truck’s interior, completely destroying it.

Shortly after, another fire was reported at a sign business in the 13800 block of Ventura Boulevard, less than a mile from where the truck was set alight.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that the fire was reported at 2:07 a.m. and noted that “an outside fire” was extending into the one-story commercial building.

Firefighters were able knock down the blaze in just over 30 minutes, LAFD said, adding that the metal-clad building sustained damage across the back and into the rear of the structure.

According to news stringer service KNN, a rubbish fire was also reported on Ventura Boulevard around the same time as the building fire.

KNN also captured footage of the aftermath of several more vehicle fires parked behind a nearby apartment complex after the previous fires. One SUV sustained major front end and interior damage, while the other appeared to only have minor damage to the hood.

Just after 7 a.m. Monday, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed to KTLA that officers were called to the 14200 block of Moorpark Street at 1:48 a.m. to canvass the area for a possible arson suspect.

Fire crews had requested the LAPD units, the spokesperson said.

“Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a number of vehicle fires in the surrounding area,” LAPD stated. “The initial call came from the 14200 block of Moorpark Street; other calls were generated for possible fires at Moorpark and Tyrone Avenue, Moorpark and Hazeltine Avenue and Moorpark and Colbath Avenue.”

Officers were not immediately able to locate a possible suspect nor provide a description. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

No further information on the three car fires and one structure fire was immediately released.
