Pubs are part of our national identity – so why is Sir Keir Starmer trying to destroy them with nanny state nonsense?

PUBS are part of our national identity. That’s why I run my surgeries from them for my constituents in Ashfield, Notts.

It’s why after the election I said I will keep listening to what people say in pubs and take that back to Westminster, because these hubs are the heartbeat of my community and the best place to understand what the people of Ashfield want from their politicians.

After only a few months in power it’s clear Labour don’t understand the public or their priorities.

Keir Starmer was right to promise change, and he has delivered it — but sadly, unless you’re a member of the Cabinet, it’s a change for the worse.

Removing the Winter Fuel Payment from millions of pensioners, releasing criminals from prison early and feathering their own nests have revealed where Labour’s priorities lie.

True colours

We now live in a two-tier society, where the Prime Minister, who is paid £166,786, is very happy to distribute the taxpayers’ income, just not his own.

From accepting free tickets to watch top-flight football to receiving donations for his wife’s outfits, Free Gear Keir has quickly shown his true colours.

Starmer’s response has been as half-baked as his policies, paying back £6,000 of the freebies but keeping the rest.

He should give it all back. Britain deserves better.

Starmer’s approval ratings are now below those of Tory leader Rishi Sunak.

The Prime Minister has chosen to take the worst elements of the previous administration, including the failed generational smoking ban, and harden them — to the detriment of the hospitality industry.

Fifty pubs a month closed for good across England and Wales in the first half of this year.

At the same time, our smoking rates are at their lowest levels on record and are much lower than the rest of Europe.

So why is our PM planning to ban smoking in pub gardens?

Starmer’s puritan Labour Party is on the march, intent on banning any behaviour they disagree with until we are all malnourished vegans.

Nobody voted for this, nobody wants to see more restrictions on the hospitality sector, and nobody wants their local pub to close.

This policy will be the final nail in the coffin for many pubs, which have been desperately struggling to recover since the Covid lockdowns.

Taxes on tobacco are so high that the UK already has a booming illicit tobacco market, with data revealing that 80 per cent of UK smokers have bought illegal tobacco in the past year.

My party, Reform, will vote against the Tobacco And Vapes Bill.

We know the importance of protecting the pubs that serve as the backbone of communities up and down the country.

Labour also plans to press ahead with the generational smoking ban, and claims it will save the country money and reduce pressure on the NHS. I don’t see how.

Taxes on tobacco are so high that the UK already has a booming illicit tobacco market, with data revealing that 80 per cent of UK smokers have bought illegal tobacco in the past year.

The illicit and non-duty-paid tobacco sector has become the third biggest sales channel in the UK. All of that is lost revenue to the Treasury.

We are approaching the Budget. Any further tax increases on tobacco will only drive more people to the black market.

If Labour really are the guardians of fiscal responsibility they paint themselves as, they will look at the facts and pursue a smoking policy based on real evidence.

Over the past year, the overall tax on machine-rolled cigarettes has increased by 21 per cent, and this has driven Brits to purchase cheaper, and often more harmful, illicit cigarettes.

In a cost-of-living crisis, those taxes hit hardest the poorest communities that Labour are supposed to represent.

They also cut Treasury revenues, which were £2.6billion lower in 2023 than the Office For Budget Responsibility forecast.

And it gets worse. Increases to excise may also have added 0.1 per cent to inflation, leading to an additional £1.5billion in government spending on inflation-linked things such as benefits and pensions.

Needlessly intervening

At a time when Labour continuously warns us about a £22billion black hole in the public finances, that is a whopping £4billion in missed revenue and government spending which we cannot afford to lose.

If Starmer really does care about the economy more than ideology, he should stop wasting taxpayers’ money on nanny state vanity projects that offer no proven route to success.

They may have been in power for only three months, but the British public has had enough of the current government.

New polling data has revealed that if a General Election were held today, Labour’s majority would have decreased by 64 seats.

The people of Britain want their country back.

They are sick of government needlessly intervening in their lives.

We at Reform will stand up for your liberties, end nanny-statism and allow you to make up your own mind regarding how you live your life.

Perhaps the Prime Minister and his Cabinet would understand these issues better if they spent less time quaffing champagne in fancy corporate boxes and more time down the pub talking to voters.

Whole Foods confirms new store format won’t feature popular payment method as exec claims it’s ‘very restricted’

WHOLE Foods Market has confirmed that its new small-format Daily Shop stores will not be equipped with a popular payment method.

The Just Walk Out frictionless checkout technology won’t be available at the major supermarket chain as its executive claims it is “very restricted”.

A Whole Foods executive said the technology’s requirement for a fixed store layout has proven ‘very restricted’ for grocery operations.[/caption]

The decision comes months after both Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods deemed the automated payment system unfit for grocery environments, choosing to pivot its application to other retail settings.

Amazon has been aggressively rolling out its Just Walk Out technology in smaller, quick-trip retail formats like airport stores and stadium shops.

But Whole Foods’ executive vice president of growth and development, Christina Minardi, revealed the company’s decision to move in a different direction, Grocery Dive reports.

According to Minardi, the technology’s requirement for a fixed store layout has proven “very restricted” for grocery operations.

“If you have a bin of tomatoes and you want to, all of a sudden, just build some mozzarella on an ice bin, you can’t,” Minardi explained.

She added that the entire setup would have to be meticulously mapped to the cameras, a process that could take weeks.

This flexibility in layout is essential to the new Daily Shop format, where displays and large cases are designed to move and rotate based on customer traffic and the store’s evolving inventory.

Whole Foods found the Just Walk Out technology cumbersome for this type of dynamic retail space.

The limitations were also felt in the two full-format Whole Foods locations that initially tested the system, leading to its eventual removal.

Earlier this year, Whole Foods announced it would pull the technology from its two pilot locations to ensure a more “consistent shopping experience” across its stores.

Both stores now rely on traditional checkout methods, including self-checkout and manned registers.

However, while Whole Foods is stepping away from Just Walk Out, it will continue to integrate Amazon One—a palm-based payment system—across all U.S. stores, including the new Daily Shop locations.

This technology has proven to be a better fit for the company’s operational needs and customer experience.

Although Just Walk Out may not be returning to Whole Foods anytime soon, Amazon has not halted its innovation.

Over the summer, Amazon introduced an advanced AI model designed to make the technology faster, more accurate, and less expensive to implement.

The company is also expanding the use of Just Walk Out in fast-paced environments like universities, stadiums, airports, and amusement parks.

Minardi did not completely rule out the possibility of revisiting Just Walk Out in the future, suggesting that as the technology evolves, it could once again be considered for Whole Foods.

But, for now, the company’s focus remains on a payment experience that aligns with the flexible and frequently changing nature of its stores.

What is Just Walk Out technology?

JUST Walk Out technology is a checkout-free shopping system developed by Amazon that allows customers to enter a store, pick up items, and leave without going through a traditional checkout process.

The technology uses a combination of sensors, cameras, computer vision, and artificial intelligence to track what items customers take from or return to shelves.

Customers enter the store by scanning a QR code using the store’s app or their payment card at the entrance.

As customers pick up or return items to the shelves, the system automatically detects and tracks these actions. It uses sensors, shelf cameras, and AI to monitor movement and keep an accurate tally of items.

When customers are finished shopping, they simply walk out of the store without needing to stand in line or go through a traditional cashier checkout process.

Once the customer leaves, their account (linked to the app or payment method used upon entry) is charged for the items they took, and they receive a digital receipt.

This technology is used in Amazon Go stores and is being licensed to other retailers. It eliminates the need for human cashiers, reduces wait times, and offers a seamless shopping experience.

Angel Reese in more Caitlin Clark controversy after snubbing WNBA rival’s Rookie of the Year award to promote podcast

THE WNBA season is almost over, but Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese’s beef is still going strong.

Clark won WNBA Rookie of the Year, and fans are calling out Reese for not congratulating her.

Angel Reese finished in second place for Rookie of the Year[/caption]

Clark won the award after leading the Indiana Fever to the playoffs, giving the team back-to-back winners after Aliyah Boston won in 2023.

Surprisingly, Clark wasn’t the unanimous winner, as she received 66 of the 67 votes for Rookie of the Year.

One voter placed Reese ahead of Clark.

Fans of Clark raged about this snub, but quickly turned their attention to Reese for not acknowledging her rival’s award win.

Instead of congratulating Clark, Reese promoted her podcast, Unapologetically Angel, on social media.

“NEW EPISODE OUT NOW!! WE DROPPED SOME GEMS!!” she posted.

Fans were quick to reply asking Reese to congratulate Clark for winning Rookie of the Year.

“You lost rookie of the year but you’re tweeting this,” one fan said.

“Yeah! U forgot to congratulate CC for her ROTY award. It’s all good, she has enough fans to last her her whole career,” another fan said.

“Congrats on your single vote for rookie of the year,” a third fan said.

“You not finna congratulate your fellow mate for rookie of the year?” a fourth fan said.

“Make sure you shout out the #ROTY,” a fifth fan said.

Fans have been so wild on social media that some awards voters have come out to ensure fans of who they voted for.

“Just so we’re clear… it wasn’t me,” Connecticut reporter Terrika Foster-Brasby wrote.

“I voted for CC. So don’t blow me up or call me a hater cause IT WASNT TERRIKA.”

    WNBA All-Star rosters

THE 2024 WNBA All-Star game rosters have been announced, with Team WNBA set to face Team USA on July 20.

    Team WNBA:

    • Breanna Stewart – New York Liberty
    • Diana Taurasi – Phoenix Mercury
    • Alyssa Thomas – Connecticut Sun
    • A’ja Wilson – Las Vegas Aces
    • Jackie Young – Las Vegas Aces

“I had Caitlin Clark on my ballot for Rookie of the Year,” journalist Khristina Williams wrote.

While fans have invented some sort of beef between Clark and Reese, the two have publicly stated that they have nothing against each other.

It is also silly to think that Reese should be obligated to congratulate someone who won an award over her.

Both players had great seasons, with Clark averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game.

Reese averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game.
