Huge rule change affecting 250,000 drivers will hit in days – everything you need to know to avoid fine

A HUGE rule change affecting more than 250,000 drivers will hit in days.

From October 28, HGV drivers in London will need to follow a range of new safety rules to avoid big fines.

Alamy
Around 268,000 people worked as HGV drivers between June 2020 and June 2021[/caption]

HGVs will now be given a Direct Vision Standard score based on how well the driver can see from their cab without mirrors or cameras.

The DVS measures the exact volume of space an HGV driver can see directly through their cab windscreen.

All HGVs in London will be given a DVS star rating between zero and five.

A rating of zero means drivers can see very little through their cab windows.

But a rating of five means they have an excellent view of everything going on around them.

To achieve even a one-star rating, HGV drivers must be able to see the head and shoulders of 99% of adults from the front and side.

And to operate in London, HGVs over 12 tonnes will need at least a three-star rating.

If they cannot achieve this, HGVs must be fitted with up-to-date safety features known as the Progressive Safe System (PSS).

The PSS requires top-grade mirrors or monitoring system, a nearside camera, side sensors and blind spot systems, and audio warning units.

Transport for London said there will be a three-month grace period starting on October 28 for HGV drivers to adjust.

Around 268,000 people worked as HGV drivers between June 2020 and June 2021.

Progressive Safe System rules

ANY HGV over 12 tonnes with a DSV rating of two stars or lower must have:

  • Class V and VI mirrors, or an ECE R46 approved monitoring system (CMS), or a combination of both.
  • A nearside camera to completely eliminate the nearside blind spot.
  • Side sensors to ensure full coverage down the nearside of the cab and trailer (but which are not triggered by roadside furniture or stationary vehicles).
  • Moving Off Information Systems (MOIS) fitted to the front of vehicles to prevent frontal blind spot collisions when moving off.
  • Audio warning units to allow the HGV to warn other road users of intended manoeuvres.

Coronation Street legend quits after 20 years – and reveals he secretly left five months ago

A CORONATION Street legend has quit after 20 years working on the soap.

Their first contribution to the long-running ITV drama came in 2004.

The beloved personality first joined the team in 2004 and went onto write over 330 scripts[/caption]

Writer Jonathan Harvey went on to pen 331 Coronation Street scripts for the likes of Sally Dynevor, Helen Worth and William Roache.

Now, the personality has announced his departure, just as his final instalments made it to air on October 2.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote: “My last episode of Corrie is on tonight. Paul’s funeral.

“Jan McVerry’s written the first half and me the second. Sure it’ll all be plain sailing and everyone’ll get on and it’ll all be lovely,” along with a string of eye emojis.

One devastated fan wrote back to the writer, saying: “I was a complete basket case!!!

“What do you mean, your last???? NO, surely not!”

After reading the comment, he then admitted that he actually left the soap five months ago.

However, the scenes that he personally wrote had only just made their way onto the airwaves this week.

Jonathan replied: “I actually left five months ago but it’s shot so far in advance it’s taken til now to air my last one!”

The acclaimed writer also hinted that he would like to return to the cobbles in the future.

Adding: “Needed a break after twenty years. Hopefully I’ll be back!”

Jonathan’s final episodes were dramatic as Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) tried to kiss his former boyfriend Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce).

This was after his late husband Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) passed away before he could properly say goodbye in the hospital.

Aston Villa vs Man Utd preview

Manchester United make the daunting trip to Villa Park on Sunday to take on Unai Emery’s buoyant Aston Villa in the Premier League.

It had already looked a tricky fixture on paper, and now it looks even tougher with the hosts having recorded an amazing 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League midweek.

Confidence couldn’t be much higher for Villa following that result AND four victories in their opening six matches of the campaign to leave them two points behind leaders Liverpool.

Since Unai Emery’s first Premier League game in charge of Aston Villa, only Manchester City (85), Liverpool (84) and Arsenal (81) have picked up more home points than the Villans (74).

The same cannot be said for travelling Manchester United, who’ve failed to win any of their last four in all competitions.

The Red Devils surrendered a two-goal lead against Porto on Thursday, and were eventually thrilled to get a point courtesy of Harry Maguire.

Nevertheless, Erik ten Hag is under huge pressure to deliver a result this weekend, and he’ll have to do it without suspended captain Bruno Fernandes.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League table having lost three of their first six games – and their seven points is their joint fewest after six games of a Premier League season.

Since the Dutchman joined the club in 2022, no Premier League club have conceded three or more goals in a match more times in all competitions than United’s 24.

However, there is a glimmer of hope in that Aston Villa have won just one of their last 25 Premier League home games against Manchester United.

Aston Villa vs Man Utd preview betting tips and predictions

Home bonanza

I see very few reasons why we wouldn’t back Aston Villa to win this contest, and win it handsomely.

The Villans are flying high after their historic win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and should put that confidence to good use against a side who’ve conceded three in each of their last two outings.

Manchester United have lost eight Premier League matches by a margin of three or more goals under Erik ten Hag. They are also without captain Bruno Fernandes, who misses just his eighth league game since joining. United are winless in their last four (D1 L3) and have failed to score in their last three without the Portuguese international.

He’s a big miss for United, who’ve got the FIFTH highest xGC (expected goals conceded) in the division.

Wat goal

If we expect Aston Villa to score a few, then forward Ollie Watkins should be involved.

The England international, 29, has scored four in his last three Premier League outings and has been directly involved in 55 goals in 67 Premier League appearances under Unai Emery (36 goals, 19 assists).

Only Erling Haaland (65) and Mohamed Salah (60) have scored or assisted more goals in that time. He’s registered the most efforts on target for his side and none of his colleagues can match his xG of 3.50.
