Stunning images of Milky Way captured in record-breaking detail – and scientists see 10x more cosmic objects than before

BREATHTAKING new images of the Milky Way have been been revealed as part of what scientists say is the most detailed infrared map ever made.

The map is made up of roughly 200,000 images, taken over the last 13 years, that have been laid on top of each other.

The images, captured by the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) VISTA telescope, have given scientists a more accurate 3D view of the inner regions of the Milky Way.

These regions were previously hidden by heavy interstellar dust, which is responsible for the dark patches we can see within the mass of stars in the night sky.

The published images are just snapshots of a wider map containing more than 1.5billion cosmic objects.

That is roughly 10 times more celestial articles than the ESO’s previous map published in 2012.

The ESO is an intergovernmental research organisation made up of 16 member states for ground-based astronomy, including the UK.

This gigantic dataset, made up of 500 terabytes of data, covers an area of the sky equivalent to 8,600 full moons.

For context, 500 terabytes of data is the equivalent of over 40 years worth of video, or 166million songs.

It is the largest observational project ever carried out with an ESO telescope.

“We made so many discoveries, we have changed the view of our Galaxy forever,” Dante Minniti, an astrophysicist at Universidad Andrés Bello in Chile who led the overall project, said in a statement.

After peering through the dust and gas, scientists were able to see radiation from the Milky Way’s most hidden corners.

The team have spotted newborn stars, which are often wrapped up in dusty cocoons away from view, as well as globular clusters.

Globular clusters are tightly bound clusters of tens of thousands to millions of stars, and host some of the oldest stars in the galaxy.

Many objects in the universe are too cold and faint to be detected in visible light.

However, they can be detected in the infrared.

The VISTA telescope can see infrared light, meaning it can also spot brown dwarfs, which are much smaller and colder than normal stars.

Free-floating planets without a star to orbit can be picked up by the telescope, based at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile, too.

Researchers also tracked hypervelocity stars – runaway stars that travel 1.5milliom-miles-per-hour after interacting with a supermassive black hole.

Fuming fans say ‘I have no words’ after spotting what Bruno Fernandes did in final seconds of Man Utd’s FC Twente clash

MANCHESTER UNITED fans raged at Bruno Fernandes for a decision he made in the final moments of their 1-1 draw with FC Twente.

Erik ten Hag‘s side had to settle for a disappointing point in their Europa League opener at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

But he produced a tame shot before the referee blew the final whistle

Christian Eriksen‘s stunning opener was cancelled out by a second-half equaliser from Sam Lammers.

Yet Man Utd had a good set-piece opportunity when the clock ticked into the 95th minute.

With the minimum stoppage time up, Fernandes stood over a free-kick from around 35 yards out.

The Red Devils loaded the box with six players as they waited for the Portuguese playmaker to loft a ball into the penalty area.

Instead, the Man Utd captain chose the audacious option of shooting from distance and saw his tame effort float into the keeper’s arms.

The referee then blew his whistle for the end of the match.

Fernandes’ decision infuriated Man Utd supporters as they took to social media to vent their frustrations.

One said: “As for Bruno I have no words 😂😂 got his new contract been a mare since lol.”

Another added: “Why did he shoot?! 😭😭

A third replied: “Definitely wasn’t part of the set piece instruction.”

While a fourth responded: “He thinks he’s [Cristiano] Ronaldo 😭😭😭.”

Fernandes, who last month penned a new contract to keep him at Man Utd until 2027, is yet to score in eight games this season but has contributed four assists.

Third tier club forfeit match for using ‘FAKE players’ including foreign star they claimed was ‘deaf, illiterate mute’

A THIRD-TIER club have been forced to forfeit a match after using a fake player they claimed was a deaf and illiterate mute.

Romanian club CSM Adjud had three points taken away after their 1-0 win over Voința Limpeziș was turned into a forfeit.

A Romanian third-tier side were stripped of a win after fielding an ineligible player[/caption]

The FRF Disciplinary Commission interevened following allegations Adjud had fielded an ineligible player.

It was claimed that instead of Romanian Cosmin Togan taking to the field, it was actually a South American national playing instead.

Adjud Ciprian Vrabie revealed his club thought such an incident may occur, so he asked the referee to take a look at the players’ registration sheet.

He explained: “At one point, during the match, I heard that the player with number 21 from Limpeziș was speaking in a foreign language.

“On the score sheet, however, there was a Romanian footballer, who met the U19 criteria, born in 2005.

“At half-time, I filed an appeal, and the referee requested that the respective player come to the booth for identification.

“The officials from Voința explained that the footballer is deaf-mute, so it is not possible to talk to him.

“And when he was only asked to write his name on a piece of paper, it was impossible, under the argument that he doesn’t even know how to write!”

Who are these famous footballers?

Limpeziș president Ioniță Dedu has revealed his club have appealed the league’s decision to forfeit the match.

Dedu said: “I wasn’t even at that match and, frankly, I don’t know these details very well.

“But I don’t think there was any substitution. How to do such a thing? I will also discuss again with my colleagues from the club.

“I understood that the federation self-reported that we would use two non-EU players.

“It is about a Colombian and a Nigerian, who would have an American passport. Or something like that. I can’t tell you exactly. We have already appealed”.

However, when asked to provide the name of the South American national who is at the centre of the storm, Dedu did not reply and instead rejected the reporter’s call and blocked his number.

From 3 different types of erections to stealth orgasms – the astonishing penis facts you don’t know

MEN can tend to spend a lot of time thinking about their penis.

Though the body part can be a subject of discussion or fixation, there may be some things about your todger that you just don’t know.

an illustration of a man with a measuring tape and a broken bone
It’s possible to get three different types of erection – two with no physical contact involved

For example, did you know that you can have more than one type of erection?

And despite what you might think, you don’t necessarily need an erection to orgasm.

Dr Danae Maragouthakis, CEO and resident medical director of Yoxly laid bare a number of interesting facts about male genitals.

Breakages, shrinkage and the ideal diet to boost your erections, here are eight astonishing penis facts you didn’t know.

1. There are 3 types of erection

An erection is an erection, right?

According to Dr Maragouthakis, not quite.

She says it’s possible to experience three different types of erections.

It all has to do with how they, ahem, arise.

The first type the sex health expert describes is the reflexogenic erection.

These are erections that occur as a result of direct stimulation of the penis.

Meanwhile, psychogenic erections occur as a result of visual stimulation or sexual fantasies.

Finally, subconscious erections can also pop up without any physical stimulation or arousing visual stimuli

This type will often occur during the dreaming phase of sleep.

2. Penises are breakable

Penises don’t have bones in them but they can break, Dr Maragouthakis says.

“The erectile tissue can be damaged, leading to conditions like penile fractures,” she explains.

“This usually occurs when there’s a sudden force applied to an erect penis.”

A video produced by specialists at the Institute of Human Anatomy recently laid bare the painful reality of penis fractures

Jonathan Bennion, who co-founded the institute, explains that actually breaks in penile fractures is the internal connective tissue called the tunica albuginea, which surrounds the erectile tissue of the penis.

When blood fills the penis during an erection, the tunica albuginea stretches and tightens to maintain its shape.

As erections place tension on the connective tissue, this is the area that breaks during a penis fracture – making a distinct cracking, popping or snapping sound.

The nightmarish injury can occur when happen during “acrobatic” sexual positions or even when playing sports, Jonathan says.

3. What you eat can give you better erections

The saying ‘you are what you eat’ also applies to sexual health, according to Dr Maragouthakis.

Erections occur when the penis hardens and grows as its tissues fill with blood, so it makes sense that consuming things that help boost blood flow may help this process along.

Foods rich in nitric oxide include dark chocolate, watermelon, beets, garlic and leafy green vegetables, Dr Maragouthakis says.

Incorporating foods high in zinc may also help with getting better erections, as the nutrient is important for health testosterone levels and sperm production.

Good sources of this are oysters, beef, chicken, beans and nuts.

As with many other aspects of your health, water will be your best friend as it’ll keep you hydrated and help maintain healthy blood flow, Dr Maragouthakis adds.

4. You can ejaculate multiple times with one erection

Once you achieve an orgasm, you’d assume that your erection will fall.

But for some people, it’s possible to ejaculate multiple times while maintaining your erection, Dr Maragouthakis says.

The sexual health specialist answered an anonymous question in a video recently posted to Yoxly’s Instagram account.

“I came three times while having one erection,” the person asked. “What’s wrong with me?”

Penis fact vs. fiction

Though penises are the subject of much contemplation, certain myths around them reign rampant – from shoe size reflecting the size of your member, to creams and oils being able to make it larger.

On top of this, it can often feel taboo or embarrassing to ask questions about your private parts.

GP and author Dr Philippa Kaye answers burning questions you might have about your nether regions.

What is the average penis size?

The average size of a penis is approximately 9cm when flaccid/soft and about 13cm when erect.

Does your shoe size reflect your penis size?

No.

A study looking at the penises of over 100 men of varying ages looked at shoe size and penis length and found no correlation between the two.

Why is the penis shaped like a mushroom?

So, there is a ridge between the top of the shaft of the penis and the glans, which is shaped rather like a mushroom.

One theory as to why this is is known as the ‘semen displacement theory’, which suggests that the shape of this ridge essentially scoops out and removes any sperm left behind in the vagina by a previous partner, who might be a genetic rival evolution-wise.

Can you break your penis?

There are no bones in the penis, but you can still break it.

During an erection there are spongy tissues called corpus cavernosum, which fill with blood to make the penis erect.

If there is a trauma, often a violent twisting or bending motion when the penis is erect, then part of the covering of the corpus cavernosum called the tunica albuginea can burst, leading to bleeding into the penis and a very painful swelling.

It is rare and tends to occur during sex, often when a partner is on top.

Read more on penis facts and fiction here

Dr Maragouthakis says: “This can be entirely normal for some people, especially if they have a high level of arousal or are particularly sensitive.

“Some people have a shorter refractory period, which is the recovery period after orgasm and that allows them to achieve multiple orgasms in a relatively short time.

“Your body might be capable of sustaining an erection through multiple ejaculations, which isn’t typical for everyone but it’s not abnormal.”

5. Penises have spines

Now, we’ve already covered how penises don’t have bones.

That is, human penises don’t.

Several animals, like chimpanzees, cats, bats and koalas have “pointed, keratinised structures” in their genitalia.

“They may help to induce ovulation or enhance sensation during sexual activity,” Dr Maragouthakis says.

6. Your penis is longer than it looks

Some men can become preoccupied with the size of their member, though size really isn’t a measure of attractiveness or pleasure.

But your penis may actually be longer than it looks externally.

According to Dr Maragouthakis: “Approximately 30 per cent of the tissues that make up the male erection are actually internal (i.e. extend into the body), so not all of it is visible from the outside.”

7. Your penis can shrink

For most, the appearance of their penis probably won’t change much throughout their life.

But some men can notice some shrinkage as the years go by.

Writing exclusively for The Sun, GP and author Dr Philippa Kaye said: “There are lots of causes of this, included high blood pressure and peripheral vascular disease, which may lead to decreased blood flow to the penis.

“Low testosterone levels and ageing may also affect the size of the penis, as can having a significant curve due to Peyronie’s disease.

“Some types of treatment for prostate cancer, such as a radical prostatectomy, can affect the size of the penis.”

Superintendent pharmacist at Chemist Click, Abbas Kanani added smoking and taking certain medications can also change the look of your penis over time.

8. You need an erection to orgasm

Most of us assume that in order to climax, you need to have gotten an erection.

But according to Dr Maragouthakis, this isn’t necessarily the case.

“While an erection is often associated with sexual arousal and orgasm, it’s not a strict requirement for all individuals.

“Some people can experience orgasm without a full erection, and various factors can influence sexual response.”

I’m a relationship expert – four signs your partner is on the brink of cheating

IT’S COMMON for people to worry about being cheated on – even those of us who are in the most secure, committed relationships.

So whether you have some sneaky suspicions or you’re just wondering what to keep an eye out for, it’s good to know what some potential red flags are.

An expert has shared four red flags that could indicate your partner is cheating on you[/caption]

And it’s bad news if they’re secretive with their phone[/caption]

Luckily, one relationship expert is on hand to help couples avoid heartbreak and shared four red flags that could mean your partner is cheating on you.

April Davis, a renowned relationship counsellor and founder of LUMA Luxury Matchmaking, says: “Infidelity is yet again on the rise.

“But there are tell-tale signs that your partner might be thinking about cheating.

“Recognising and understanding these signs is necessary for couples to proactively address concerns and work towards strengthening their relationship.”

Being defensive about privacy

Everyone is a little bit defensive when it comes to their privacy, but if they become increasingly secretive then it could be a red flag.

Acting secretively with their phone, computer, or social media activity may indicate they are harbouring thoughts of infidelity.

April says: “Whilst we’re not talking about committing a direct breach of someone’s privacy, if your partner won’t let you see anything on their phone or just hates the thought of you going through it, 9 times out of 10 it’s usually nothing.

“But visible distress and aggression towards that is a big red flag, especially if you let them go through your devices.”

Avoiding the big conversations

We’ve all been in a situation where you want to have serious conversations with someone you love about taking things to the next level.

Which means that when you’ve spent enough time together and have a feeling that you want to take things further, then you’ll want to have the big talk.

But you may be in for some trouble if your partner is avoiding these discussions or seems put off by long-term commitment.

April stressed the importance of having open communication and said: “If you feel like you’ve invested enough time and effort into a relationship, you’re more than welcome to open up a deep meaningful chat with your partner about it.

“But noticing a change in your partner’s emotions when it comes to this is a telling sign that they aren’t as ready as you are and are potentially thinking about other options.”

Sudden changes in routine

When you’ve been with someone long enough, you often know their routine like the back of your hand.

But if they suddenly have an unexpected change to that routine, it may be a cause for concern.

Trust your instincts and pay attention to any significant deviations from your partner’s normal behaviour.

If your partner suddenly alters their work schedule, starts spending more time away from home, or develops an unusual urgency to be alone, it might indicate a shift in their priorities.

New hobbies or interests that exclude you, or changes in gym or workout routines without explanation, could also be red flags.

April cautions: “While personal growth and change are natural, drastic shifts in routine that create distance in the relationship are worth discussing.

“If your partner’s new schedule or interests consistently leave you feeling left out, it’s time for an honest conversation about your concerns and expectations.”

DON'T PANIC

WHILE these red flags could mean something sinister is going on - it could also be completely innocent and easily explained.

The key to a healthy relationship is being open and honest with each other, having good communication, and deeply trusting each other.

So if you think something may be going on, April has urged you not to panic – talk to your partner and try to find out the source of the problem because it could be completely harmless.

She said: “If you suspect your partner is thinking about cheating, don’t hit the panic button just yet.

“While certain behaviours may raise red flags, they’re not a smoking gun, and could indicate deeper emotional struggles to explore with your partner.

“Try to address concerns calmly and constructively. Approach issues with open-ended, ‘I’ questions like, ‘I’ve noticed more distance between us than usual – what’s going on?’

“I cannot emphasise enough how much creating a safe space for dialogue is key to getting to the heart of the issue.

“If your partner’s working late, sitting at home in the dark waiting for your partner whilst you’re halfway through a bottle of liquor is a big no-no.

“If they won’t let you check their phone for whatever reason, just let it go.

“And if you and your partner are dealing with these concerns, communication, trust, and even professional counselling can help navigate the rough waters.

“It’s all about working through those uncomfortable moments before they turn into bigger problems.”

The spark is dwindling

When couples first get together, it’s natural for them to be giddy and excited all the time as they fall in love.

And while this initial excitement sometimes dims over time, it’s important that the spark is always there.

This means that both parties need to put the effort in to nourish and keep it alive.

But if one person isn’t doing that, or has a sudden lack of interest, this could be a cheating red flag.

April warns: “Some couples can experience an extended honeymoon period, which could go on from months to a year, but ending with disastrous consequences.

“A sudden loss of common interests, more heated arguments, or losing those ‘butterflies’ in your stomach that you once had can be big indicators of such.

“And don’t think your partner isn’t at that point either.

“This is where communication is most important, if your partner seems less enthusiastic about spending time with you, it may suggest they are feeling disconnected or considering exploring other relationships.

“So if you notice a significant change in yours and your partner’s feelings toward each other but still want it to make things work, it’s time to address it openly and honestly.”
