Major update on mass Boots closure plans with last 10 stores to shut for good in weeks

BOOTS has issued a major update on its store closure plans after previously announcing that 300 shops would shut for good.

The health and beauty chain announced last year that it would close hundreds of branches as part of a plan to reduce its store count.

In a fresh update, Boots UK told The Sun that over 290 stores have now shut as part of these plans.

This means that fewer than 10 stores are still scheduled to close before the health and beauty chain completes its extensive closure programme.

Although Boots did not release a list of the remaining stores scheduled for closure, they are all expected to close by the end of October.

Most of the closures have taken place as the leases of the affected stores have expired.

The latest update comes after new data obtained by Healthwatch found that 436 pharmacies closed permanently in England between January 1 and December 31, 2023.

Boots revealed a jump in sales for the latest quarter, as its parent firm cut profit forecasts and announced US store closures.

The UK arm revealed higher sales across its pharmacy and retail businesses during the quarter ending May.

However, total sales growth slowed to 1.6% as store closures impacted it over the past year.

Over the past year, Boots has shut around 290 shops to take its store estate from around 2,200 down to 1,900 sites.

Boots says that most closures have happened in areas with another store nearby.

In June, parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) said it plans to shut more of its underperforming US shops following a strategic review.

WBA also cuts its earning per share guidance for the financial year to August, amid a “challenging US retail environment”.

Overall group sales were 2.6% higher at 36.4 billion dollars (£28.8 billion) for the quarter to May, as its US business saw stronger pharmacy sales offset a retail slump.

In the UK, comparable retail sales grew by 6% year-on-year, with in-store sales higher due to stronger footfall in its travel, beauty, and flagship shops.

It highlighted that airport stores performed particularly well following recent refurbishments.

Meanwhile, digital sales grew by 13.8% for the period, as it benefited from investment in its Boots app, which provides shoppers with personal offers.

Boots also reported stronger sales growth in its pharmacy arm, which reported a 5.8% rise amid increased take up for its healthcare services.

MORE ON BOOTS CLOSURES

Since 2019, Boots has embarked on a major company restructure dubbed the Boots Transformation Plan.

At the time of its launch in 2019, the brand earmarked 200 stores for closure.

The closures took place over an eighteen-month period.

Many of the closures were because they were loss-making and two-thirds of them were within walking distance of each other, the chain said.

In 2020, Boots announced 48 opticians were closing with the loss of 4,000 jobs.

Last July, Boots announced further plans to shut 300 more stores.

The move is aimed to reduce the chain’s store portfolio from around 2,200 to just 1,900.

So far, 253 of these store closures have taken place and a further 47 shops will close later this year.

The pharmacy chain employs over 52,000 team members, and it has said that these closures will not lead to any redundancies.

Boots’ parent, WBA’s quarterly financial report, said earlier in June that it “plans to reduce its presence by up to 650 Boots stores”.

Since the launch of the Boots Transformation Plan in 2019, 581 Boots stores have closed for good.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom on the high street.

Several major retailers have plans to increase their store counts.

Why are retailers closing shops?

EMPTY shops have become an eyesore on many British high streets and are often symbolic of a town centre’s decline.

The Sun’s business editor Ashley Armstrong explains why so many retailers are shutting their doors.

In many cases, retailers are shutting stores because they are no longer the money-makers they once were because of the rise of online shopping.

Falling store sales and rising staff costs have made it even more expensive for shops to stay open. In some cases, retailers are shutting a store and reopening a new shop at the other end of a high street to reflect how a town has changed.

The problem is that when a big shop closes, footfall falls across the local high street, which puts more shops at risk of closing.

Retail parks are increasingly popular with shoppers, who want to be able to get easy, free parking at a time when local councils have hiked parking charges in towns.

Many retailers including Next and Marks & Spencer have been shutting stores on the high street and taking bigger stores in better-performing retail parks instead.

Boss Stuart Machin recently said that when it relocated a tired store in Chesterfield to a new big store in a retail park half a mile away, its sales in the area rose by 103%.

In some cases, stores have been shut when a retailer goes bust, as in the case of Wilko, Debenhams Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and Paperchase to name a few.

What’s increasingly common is when a chain goes bust a rival retailer or private equity firm snaps up the intellectual property rights so they can own the brand and sell it online.

They may go on to open a handful of stores if there is customer demand, but there are rarely ever as many stores or in the same places.

PHARMACY WOES

Pharmacy closures have become a “widespread challenge” across England.

Healthwatch England said that closures can have “huge impacts” on patients – particularly those in rural communities and older people.

New data obtained by Healthwatch found that 436 pharmacies closed permanently in England between January 1 and December 31, 2023 – the equivalent of eight pharmacies shutting their doors permanently every week.

Healthwatch also sounded the alarm over temporary closures of pharmacies – which can last hours or days.

Some 13,863 temporary closures were reported between January 1 and December 31 last year, according to a new Healthwatch briefing document.

It warned that temporary and permanent pharmacy closures are “undermining people’s access to care”.

Analysis of the data suggests that temporary closures were more common in rural areas compared with urban areas.

North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board appeared to be worst affected by temporary closures, it found.

Paul Rees, chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, said: “It’s clear that rising levels of closures are risking leaving some areas of the country as pharmacy deserts, with people having to travel much further to get access to vital services.

“Community pharmacies act as the front door to the NHS.

“If people lose access to them, it will force more patients into the 8 o’clock scramble at their GP surgery, putting pressure on the rest of our NHS system.

“1.6 million people a day visit their pharmacy but they are closing at a record rate, and millions of people are seeing the effect of that in their communities.”

I played Pele and got the better of him, now I’m still going strong at EIGHTY in English football

JIM BARRON is still going strong in the beautiful game aged 80 after getting the better of football legend Pele.

Barron is a former goalkeeper who clocked up more than 400 games in 20 years for various big names.

The stopper turned out for Wolves and Chelsea before settling down at Oxford United.

Barron then enjoyed more success at Nottingham Forest and Swindon before heading to the USA in 1977.

It was there he came up against three-time World Cup winner Pele, who was playing for the New York Cosmos after an incredible career with Santos.

Pele, who netted a mind-boggling 1,279 goals in 1,363 games for his boyhood club, enjoyed a good spell in the States despite being in his mid-30s.

But he could not find a way past Barron, who was between the sticks for Cosmos’ 3-2 win over the Connecticut Bicentennials 47 years ago.

Despite shipping three, Barron kept Pele at bay with several saves as the Brazilian, who passed away in December 2022 aged 82, failed to hit the target.

And with his 81st birthday approaching next month, the Durham man is still loving life in football.

Barron, who retired in 1981 after a spell with Peterborough, is now working as assistant manager of National League South side Bath City.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

After caretaker spells with Wolves, Birmingham and Northampton – as well as a brief stint as Cheltenham boss – Barron was cast in his Bath City role last year.

The icon, who also worked as an Everton scout, makes a 172-mile round trip from his Berkshire home twice a week.

Barron remained in the beautiful game after his retirement and has held numerous coaching roles[/caption]

Yet he is still enjoying his career as No2 to ex-Birmingham star Jerry Gill – who Barron coached 23 years ago.

Recalling his battle with Pele, Barron told the BBC: “It was one-on-one, me against Pele. I made the save.

“There’s a picture of me in a newspaper catching the ball and Pele jumping over me.

“It didn’t matter who it was against, I always took great pride stopping anyone from scoring.”

Can you name the famous fathers?

On his advanced years, Barron commented: “I’ve got aches and pains, one of my wrists is not so good and I’ve got arthritis in a couple of fingers.

“Apart from that I feel OK. I’d be bored without football. I’ve been paid all my life for something I’d do for free.

“Since leaving school I’ve been pretty much involved in football, whether that’s playing, coaching, managing and scouting. In that respect it’s been a good life. I’ve been lucky.”

Bath City boss Gill reckons Barron’s age does not impede him in the slightest, adding: “Jim has the work ethic of an enthusiastic 21-year-old.

“I honestly forgot how old Jim was when I went to the board to get permission to appoint him.

“My chairman said, ‘you do realise he’s nearly 80’. But this isn’t some 80-year-old who is sat in an armchair. This is a guy who is extremely active.”

Who is Jaguar Wright?

JAGUAR Wright has become embroiled in the Sean “Diddy” Combs ongoing sex trafficking probe.

A resurfaced interview shows the R&B singer hinting at his alleged crimes.

She called out “Diddy” as part of a wider rant discussing the “dark side of the music industry” in 2022.

Jaguar claimed that she had been to “Diddy’s parties” and saw firsthand how they operated.

The noughties singer even hinted at attending the gatherings purely to rescue what she perceived to be potential victims.

In a social media clip, Jaguar asked “Who is going to help them? What HR department do you know that has worked for any of these labels?”

It’s thought the pair met in their shared hip-hop circles.

But this was not Jaguar’s first time accusing an industry giant of alleged wrongdoing.

The outspoken singer accused her ex-boyfriend Common, real name Lonnie Rashid Lynn, of sexual assault at a concert in the 2000s.

Common, 52, hit back at these claims and denied the allegations that he was “disappointed and hurt” by.

Who is Jaguar Wright?

Jaguar first found fame after collaborating with The Roots and also worked with hip-hop duo Blackalicious.

Born Jacquelyn Suzette Wright on May 17, 1977, she has released two studio albums – Denials Delusions and Decisions in 2002 and Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul in 2005.

But her most famous feature is probably her work on Can’t Knock The Hustle / Family Affair as Jay-Z’s backup singer on MTV Unplugged back in 2001.

What is Sean “Diddy” Combs accused of?

The 54-year-old rapper-turned-business mogul was arrested at a New York hotel and charged with sex trafficking and racketeering.

He was charged with sex trafficking and racketeering.

With accusations ranging from drug-fuelled “freak offs” – where girls were forced to perform sexually for days on end – to coercion and blackmail, the once untouchable figure has faced a staggering nine lawsuits in the last year.

His arrest has shaken the music industry to its core, with many wondering whether other big names will be implicated in the case.

Following his arrest, a judge denied his request to be released on a $50million bond.

Combs has vehemently denied the claims and his lawyer says he will plead guilty.

The evidence against Sean 'Diddy' Combs

THE months-long federal sex trafficking probe against Sean Combs has culminated in a searing incictment that was unsealed on Tuesday. Combs has been hit with one count of racketeering and one count of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and one count of transportation to engage in prostitution. But behind those legal charges lies a mountain of alleged evidence of menace, violence, and horrific abuse of his fame. The indictment alleges:

  • Combs “abused, threatened, and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct.”
  • He “created a criminal enterprise whose members and associates engaged in, and attempted to engage in, among other crimes, sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice.”
  • The rapper assaulted women by “striking, punching, dragging, throwing objects at, and kicking them.”
  • Combs “manipulated women to participate in highly orchestrated performances of sexual activity with male commercial sex workers” that he called “freak offs.”
  • Freak offs “occurred regularly, sometimes lasted multiple days, and often involved multiple commercial sex workers.”
  • During freak offs, he “distributed a variety of controlled substances to victims, in part to keep the victims obedient and compliant.”
  • After freak offs, Combs and the victims “typically received IV fluids to recover from the physical exertion and drug use.”
  • In March 2024, during searches of his residences in Miami and Los Angeles, “law enforcement seized various Freak Off supplies, including narcotics and more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant.”
  • During and separate from Freak Offs, Combs “hit, kicked, threw objects at, and dragged victims, at times, by their hair…These assaults often resulted in injuries that took days or weeks to heal.”
  • He also used the “sensitive, embarrassing, and incriminating recordings” that he made during freak offs as “collateral to ensure the continued obedience and silence of the victims.”
  • Combs himself “brandished firearms to intimidate and threaten others, including victims of and witnesses to his abuse.”
  • During searches of his homes, “law enforcement seized firearms and ammunition, including three AR-15s with defaced serial numbers, as well as a drum magazine.”
  • Associates “assisted him in locating and contacting victims who attempted to flee his abuse.”
  • When witnesses to the abuse threatened his authority or reputation, he and members and associates of the enterprise “engaged in acts of violence, threats of violence, threats of financial and reputational harm, and verbal abuse. These acts of violence included kidnapping and arson.”

Moment fuming Melania Trump lashes out at FBI for raiding Barron’s room – then blasts Harris for ‘country’s suffering’

MELANIA Trump blasted the FBI for raiding her son Barron’s room at Mar-a-Lago during the feds probe into whether the former president mishandled a trove of classified documents.

The former first lady said the raid made her angry and claimed it was an invasion of privacy.

Melania Trump ripped the FBI after they raided Barron’s room at Mar-A-Lago
Fox News

Trump shared the revelation during a sit-down interview with Fox News star Ainsley Earhardt which aired on Thursday morning.

The interview aired just days before her memoir Melania is released.

Trump recalled the moment her son Barron’s room was searched as part of the FBI’s probe into her husband’s handling of classified files.

“It made me angry,” she admitted.

She admitted she was surprised at how the probe was carried out.

Trump also lashed out at the policies of the Biden-Harris administration and told voters their fate is in their hands over which path they want to pursue.

She claimed the border is open and dangerous and said the US has been suffering in recent years.

Melania Trump's response to shooting

On Sunday morning, Melania broke her silence with a statement about the shooting.

“I am thinking of you now, my fellow Americans.

“We have always been a unique union. America, the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered, but our courage and common sense must ascent and bring us back together as one.

“When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron’s life, were on the brink of devastating change. I am grateful to the brave Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband.

“To the families of the innocent victims who are now suffering from this heinous act, I humbly offer my sincerest sympathy. Your need to summon your inner strength for such a terrible reason saddens me.

“A monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald’s passion – his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration. The core facets of my husband’s life – his human side – were buried below the political machine.

“Donald, the generous and caring man who I have been with through the best of times and the worst of times.

“Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love. Our personal, structural, and life commitment – until death – is at serious risk. Political concepts are simple when compared to us, human beings.

“We are all humans, fundamentally, instinctively, we want to help one another. American politics are only one vehicle that can uplift our communities. Love, compassion, kindness, and empathy are necessities.

“And let us remember that when the time comes to look beyond the left and the right, beyond the red and the blue, we all come from families with the passion to fight for a better life together, while we are here, in this earthly realm.”

“Dawn is here again. Let us reunite. Now.

“This morning ascend above the hate, the vitriol, and the single-minded ideas that ignite violence. We want a world where respect is paramount, family is first, and love transcends. We can realize this world again. Each of us must demand to get it back. We must insist that respect fills the cornerstone of our relationships, again.

“I am thinking of you, my fellow Americans.

“The winds of change have arrived. For those of you who cry in support, I thank you. I commend those of you who have reached out beyond the political divide – thank you for remembering that every single politician is a man or a woman with a loving family.”
