We caught up with Russell this week and he talked us through a playlist of his favourite earworms including music from the album. Listen to his selection below and read what he had to say about each track he chose for us.

Russell Small, DNO P featuring Lulu – Shine Forever

Starting to make waves for Dino and I with a fantastic vocal from legend that is Lulu. It was a real pleasure to work with her on this – she’s a star.

PAWSA – Too Cool To Be Careless

Fantastic Cover of Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garrett’s Don’t Look Any Further.

Jaegerossa – The Big Red

Lush disco house track that gives me that readybrek glow.

Oden & Fatzo featuring Poppy Baskcomb – Tell Me What You Want

One of my tunes of the summer, catchy vocal over a cool disco sample taken from Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle’s Saturday Love.

Russell Small, DNO P featuring Amanda Wilson – To Be Real

Our next single from our Earworm Album, a cover of the Cheryl Lynn Classic with a top vocal performance from Amanda Wilson

Next Phase featuring Helen Bruner & Terry Jones – I Ain’t Got Time (Richard Earnshaw Remix)

Originally released in 1996 on Sub Urban records and produced by Tommy Musto, it now gets a beautiful soulful house update from Richard Earnshaw.

Eddie Craig and Amy Pearson – Spell

Great update of the Disco Tex 2001 Chaka Kahn sampling I Can Cast A Spell. The released version of said track had the Chaka vocals replaced brilliantly by Shena, this version sees a stellar job from Amy Pearson.

Alanis Morrissette – Uninvited (Freemasons Remix)

James and I went full circle with this track, originally releasing as a bootleg before recording the vocals with the amazing Bailey Tzuke, to then get asked to remix the track for Alanis herself for her Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (Thank U Edition) Album.

LF System – Lift You Up

Released Earlier this year, an uplifting 90’s influenced summer groove with a powerful vocal from Clem Douglas. The LF boys best track since Afraid To Feel in my opinion..

N.Y’s Finest – Do You Feel Me (Odyssey Inc. Remix)

This has been out for quite a while now, but it remains firmly in my playlists. A monster 90’s classic from Victor Simonelli given the remix treatment from the Odyssey Inc. Boys

The exact three parts of your shed you need to check NOW to make sure the rain doesn’t lead to rot in the winter months

THE rain has been pouring down showing that summer is well and truly over for the year.

And while most of us are ready to put our garden equipment away until spring, there’s a few jobs you need to take care of before hanging them up.

Here’s how to stop your shed from rotting this winter[/caption]

The Met Office has issued warnings across the UK as heavy rain and floods are set to hit.

As the chaotic weather sweeps across the country outdoor building experts at GardenBuildingsDirect are warning homeowners to prepare sheds, summer houses and garden offices for the colder months to ensure they don’t get damaged.

Without precautions being taken, they say wooden structures can fall victim to dampness and rot which can lead to structural issues.

A spokesperson for the shed company told the Express: “Protecting wooden sheds, summerhouses and other outdoor buildings will improve their longevity and save you from forking out for replacements.”

Ceilings and Floors

one way you can prepare your shed for the winter months is to ensure the top and bottom of it is protected from the natural elements.

The base of the shed should be lifted up to sit on a wooden panel or a concrete base.

This will prevent the base of your shed from touching the ground which can cause it to become damp and even rot.

To ensure your shed’s roof is safe make sure to check the roofing felt or felt shingles haven’t deteriorated or replace them.

These should be replaced semi-regularly as they keep the roof protected and offer insulation.

Windows and Doors

Maintaining windows and doors will ensure your shed stays waterproof through the winter months.

Wood can often shrink over time and cause cracks around the frames – meaning water can easily get in.

To fix the problem fill in any gaps with wood filler and do the same for any wood that has already rotted.

Ventilation is also important but you don’t want to leave windows open in a shed if there’s heavy rain or snow.

Instead, opt for static vents inside the shed and use a bug net to keep creepy crawlies out.

September gardening jobs

With September starting, so does autumn, and The Sun's Gardening Editor Veronica Lorraine has a few tasks to keep you busy as the summer sun winds down.

1. Starting thinking about Spring bulbs

Its early bulb time! As well as the more traditional daffodils, crocuses, alliums and bluebells, try snake-head fratillaries for something slightly different.

2. Remember the bees

Make sure you’re still looking after the bees with autumn flowering pollinators – like sedums, honeysuckle and asters.

3. Dig and enjoy your potatoes

Maincrop potatoes are ready to dig up – make sure you get them all so they don’t get slug damage.

4. Change your lawn mowing schedule

Raise the height of your lawn mower and start to reduce the amount of mowing you do. GIve it an autumn feed, especially if you didn’t get round to it in Summer and start to rake to remove thatch.

5. Plant out new perennials while the soil is still warm.

6. Take salvia cuttings

It’s as easy as cutting a shoot tip above a  node and chucking it in a glass of water to see if it sprouts roots. Especially with tender Salvias which wont survive the winter.

7. Keep camelias well watered to make sure that buds form next year.

8. Keep on deadheading and watering your hanging baskets

They should keep going until the first frosts.

9. Get pumpkins Halloween ready

Remove any leaves shading pumpkins to make sure they’ll be ready for halloween – and make sure you keep watering them, they’re very thirsty.

10. Check on your pond

Net your pond to stop it filling with fallen leaves when the trees start to drop.

Wood Preservation

Keeping your wood preserved every year will make sure it lasts longer and can face the wet weather.

This will prevent wood rot, mould and algae in your shed – it’s best to pick a wood preservative that works for the wood on your shed so do your research before buying.

Who is the world’s longest-serving death row inmate Iwao Hakamada?

PRISONER has been acquitted after spending 48 years in prison for the Hakamada mass murder of 1966.

Who is Iwao Hakamada?

Iwao Hakamada is known for being the world’s longest-serving death row inmate.

He spent a total of 48 years in prison – with more than 45 of them on death row.

Born March 10, 1936, in Yuto town, Japan, Iwao is a Japanese former professional boxer.

From 1959 to 1961, Iwao competed in 29 professional boxing matches, finishing his career with 16 wins on record, ranking sixth in his weight category.

Iwao was sentenced to death on September 11, 1968 for a mass murder that became known as the Hakamada Incident of 1966.

On September 25, 2024 he was found not guilty after a Japanese court revealed that evidence used against him was fabricated.

Iwao Hakamada’s sentence

The ex-boxer was sentenced to death in 1968 for killing his former boss, his wife, and two of their children and setting fire to their home.

On March 10, 2011 the Guinness World Records named Iwao as the world’s longest-held death row inmate.

In September 2024, Iwao was ruled not guilty in a retrial by the Shizuoka District Court – overturning the earlier wrongful conviction.

Why do people stay on death row so long?

More than half of all prisoners currently sentenced to death in the United States have been on death row for more than 18 years.

In the United States, prisoners may wait many years before execution can be carried out due to the complex and time-consuming appeal process.

Public opinion on the death penalty can change over time, as well as the way states and the federal government carry out executions which are also contributing factors.

The United States have received persistent criticism on its use of capital punishment.

Around 70% of the world’s countries have abolished capital punishment.

As of 2024, Belarus remains the only country in Europe that continues to carry out the death penalty.

The longest-serving death row inmates

SOME of the longest-serving death row inmates in the world have spent decades awaiting execution, either due to legal appeals, delays, or changes in the legal status of their sentences.

Here are some examples:

Gary Alvord (USA): Held on death row for over 39 years before dying of natural causes in 2013, Alvord was one of the longest-serving death row inmates in the United States. He was sentenced to death in 1974 in Florida for a triple murder, but his execution was delayed due to legal and mental health issues.

Iwao Hakamada (Japan): Hakamada spent over four decades on death row in Japan, since 1968, before being released after a court ruled that there was a possibility he was wrongfully convicted. Hakamada, a former boxer, was sentenced to death for a quadruple murder, with his case now one of the most famous in Japan for wrongful convictions.

Raymond Riles (USA): Riles holds the record for being one of the longest-serving death row inmates in the US, having been on death row in Texas for over 45 years (since 1976). His execution has been delayed due to issues related to his mental competency.

David Carpenter (USA): Known as the “Trailside Killer,” Carpenter has been on death row in California since 1984. He was convicted of multiple murders committed in the 1970s and early 1980s. Carpenter’s case has been delayed by California’s notoriously slow death penalty process and ongoing appeals, and he remains on death row at over 90 years old.

Ronald Sanford (USA): Sanford has been incarcerated in Indiana since he was 13 years old after being convicted of a double murder in 1987. Although not technically on death row, his life sentence without the possibility of parole has drawn comparisons to long-serving death row inmates. His case raises issues related to sentencing juveniles to life in prison.
