‘I was sleepless,’ cries homeowner over $18k water bill for 4 months of service – problem has residents going bankrupt

A DISTRESSED homeowner was hit with a water bill worth over $18,000 for four months of service, which caused him to have many sleepless nights.

Juan Villanueva and his sister, Ana, were hit with the outstanding statement after purchasing a property in Chicago‘s northwest side in 2021.

Villanueva told NewsNation affiliate WGN that he and his sibling viewed the property as a good investment, “The moment we saw the property, I loved it.

“I loved it’s old vintage looks, it’s architecture.”

But problems quickly began emerging with the home’s water service.

Villanueva told the outlet that in January 2023, he learned their water service bill was over $1,100 for the month, an outrageous amount, he said.

“I said, that’s odd, we weren’t even here,” he added.

“My typical bill was usually between $300 for every two months.”

The siblings paid the bill, which totaled $1,169, thinking it was a one-time thing.

Villanueva called the city, who informed them there could be a leak at the property causing the hiked bill.

He told WGN he hired a plumber, but no leak was uncovered inside the home’s walls.

“So, [the city] said [the leak is] probably in your front lawn or maybe underneath your sidewalk,” Villanueva said the city told him.

However, when he hired contractors to replace the lead water service line months later, no leak was found again.

At this point, I was sleepless.

That’s when the Villanuevas were hit with their next water bill, totaling $12,165.

Months later, they were billed again for $6,476.

That’s when Villanueva determined that perhaps a faulty water meter was behind the increases.

The bill dropped to previous levels after city officials replaced his old water meter.

But, by the time he uncovered the issue, the siblings owed the city more than $18,000 for four months of water.

“At this point, I was sleepless, I couldn’t function,” Villanueva told the outlet.

Villanueva reached out to Gilbert Villegas, the Alderman of Chicago’s 36th Ward, seeking for help with his massive bill.

Villegas told NewsNation that Villanueva may be in luck due to a new city legislation.

In some cases, a homeowner’s water bill can be lowered if billing mistakes are found, Villegas said.

“It was hopeless before because no one was really doing anything about it,” he told the outlet.

“That’s why I’m anxious to help out this family being impacted by this. This wrongful bill.”

It’s still unclear if Villanueva’s case will meet the standards of the new law.

WGN interviewed several other Chicago homeowners who experienced similar problematic issues with their water bills.

One homeowner received a $16,000 water bill.

The U.S. Sun has reached out to Chicago’s Water Management department.
