Ryan Brierley ready to help Salford defy the odds once again in Play-Offs

RYAN Brierley has heard it all before – Salford should be nowhere near Super League’s Play-Offs.

However, that only served as motivation to propel them not only to the top six but to a home tie in front of the biggest crowd they have ever had at the Community Stadium.

After selling Brodie Croft and Andy Ackers, hot on the heels of Tyler Dupree, many pundits tipped the Red Devils to finish closer to the bottom than the top – Leigh owner Derek Beaumont may have dished out the humble pie last week but, if anything, it should be Salford serving up.

Working with both hands tied behind their back financially – thanks to a stadium deal even today’s council leaders are privately furious at – they were seemingly restricted them to cast-offs and hand-me-downs.

But boss Paul Rowley – who will reverse the mountain of changes he made in resting almost his entire first team at Wigan – has made a silk purse from a sow’s ear and full back Brierley, a boyhood Red Devils fan who stood on the terraces, hopes to prove people further wrong.

He said: “We were probably left with no choice but to defy expectations. All the pundits and experts had us 11th, so we used that as motivation.

“That was understandable. It was a well-educated prediction given the turmoil and controversy we had to go through.

“And we’re not the most talented group, so we rely on other things – togetherness and team spirit – but naturally, it’s in the back of your mind when people write you off.

“The coaching staff are a big part of that. They let us be who we are, unapologetically. We’ve a lot of weird and wonderful characters in our team but if you look after a person the right way, you get the best out of them.

“Nene Macdonald is probably the prime example of what Paul Rowley can do to a player. He’s a great ability to make us perform under the pressure we put ourselves under too.

“We’re always our own worst critic and we’ve demonstrated great ability to bounce back from defeats because we’ve had to – it’s also satisfying to see clubs with bigger budgets finish below us.

“It shows that sometimes you don’t need class facilities and the money. If you create something more powerful from within, years like this one for us can happen.”

Salford may have progressed on the field but the biggest step forward has come off it, the city council’s deal to buy partners Peel out of the stadium.

SunSport understands all it needs now is for contracts to be signed and the club can finally start to access funds it has been deprived of for 12 years – food and beverages and sponsorship deals can all be activated after waiting for the go ahead.

City Mayor Paul Dennett will be cheering them on tonight, Leigh fan and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham may also be in the stands.

Scenes previously unseen were spotted this week, queues around the ground for tickets as hopes of a sellout remain.

But despite the euphoria, there is a job to do – go one step from a first Grand final since 2019’s fairytale.

Brierley, who scored 154 tries for Leigh, added: “It’s a special achievement for the club, especially after the turmoil we had in pre-season after losing a few players.

“And we need to be a successful team before hopefully growing something special off the pitch which can align to what we achieve on it. The club’s in a much better position than when I first joined.

“We’ve the best coach in the competition in Paul. It would be interesting to see what he can do with a bit of money behind him.

“We’ve put ourselves in a decent position to perform well – even last week at Wigan was exciting as I saw what the young players could do – now let’s go for it.

“We’re there now. We’ll give it our best shot and see where we end up.”

I don’t want to be a step-mum anymore – it’s so exhausting and I feel like all she wants is to drain my cash

A WOMAN has revealed that she feels used and exhausted and doesn’t want to be a step-parent anymore.

She explained that she and her step-daughter, 12, have always had a great relationship, but now, she feels as though she is simply being used for her money.

She confessed that not only does she feel ‘tired’, but she also feels ‘mentally exhausted’ by having to parent her 12-year-old step-daughter[/caption]

The woman claimed that not only does her step-daughter’s mother make her feel miserable, but she also is dealing with the trauma that her step-daughter is facing.

Opening up about her situation, the woman took to Reddit to reveal all, leaving many open-mouthed.

Posting on the r/Stepmom thread, under the username @whisperingvelvet33, the social media user captioned her post ‘I don’t want to be a step parent anymore.’

She then shared that now her step-daughter is getting older, she is beginning to notice her mother’s “awful personality traits bleeding into her”.

The anonymous woman confessed: “We have 50/50 [custody] (newly established, battled in court for YEARS to get more than standard because mum is unfit and has my step-daughter living in a house with a bunch of drug addicts).

“Her mum goes out of her way to make my husband and I as miserable as humanly possible.

“It usually doesn’t bother me, but now she’s doing things through my step-daughter.”

The woman explained that she spends money on her step-daughter but is often met with difficult behaviour when she returns from seeing her mother.

She confessed: “I feel like I am only good enough to take my step-daughter out to do things, spend my money on her, buy her nice things, etc.

“We typically have a really great relationship but now every time she comes back from her mothers, it takes a solid three days to get her back to her “normal.” Then, going back and starting the process all over again.

“I am mentally exhausted. She is so behind in school, her maturity, basically everything.

“I feel like we have 12 years of negative impact and trauma to try and turn around and I have no idea where to start.

“My husband basically acts like I am her mother, her mother doesn’t do anything for her either, so I feel like I am a single parent for a child I didn’t even make.”

Different parenting styles explained

There are four recognised styles of parenting explained below:

Authoritarian Parenting

What some might describe as ‘regimental’ or ‘strict parenting.

Parents with this style focus on strict rules, obedience, and discipline.

Authoritarian parents take over the decision-making power, rarely giving children any input in the matter.

When it comes to rules, you believe it’s “my way or the highway.”

Permissive Parenting

Often referred to as ‘soft parenting’ or ‘yes mums/dads’.

Permissive parents are lenient, only stepping in when there’s a serious problem.

They’re quite forgiving and they adopt an attitude of “kids will be kids.”

Oftentimes they act more like friends than authoritative figures.

Authoritative Parenting

Authoritative parents provide their children with rules and boundaries, but they also give them the freedom to make decisions.

With an authoritative parenting style, parents validate their children’s feelings while also making it clear that the adults are ultimately in charge.

They use positive reinforcement techniques, like praise and reward systems, as opposed to harsh punishments.

Neglectful or Uninvolved Parenting

Essentially, neglectful parents ignore their children, who receive little guidance, nurturing, and parental attention.

They don’t set rules or expectations, and they tend to have minimal knowledge about what their children are doing.

Uninvolved parents expect children to raise themselves. They don’t devote much time or energy to meeting children’s basic needs.

Uninvolved parents may be neglectful but it’s not always intentional. A parent with mental health issues or substance abuse problems, for example, may not be able to care for a child’s physical or emotional needs consistently.

The woman expressed that whilst she recognises that everything happens for a reason, she feels “tired” and “used”.

She concluded: “I know they say God puts everyone in situations for a reason, and maybe I am here to help her, because I am her safe space.

“But man, I feel so used and am really considering the nacho parenting just for my own mental health. I am so tired, and feel so alone. Sigh.”

REDDIT USERS REACT

Reddit users flocked to the comments to share their thoughts on the situation, with many advising the poster to speak to her husband and ask for help.

One person said: “This is too much responsibility for you to take on alone. Husband needs to step up and take over all parenting duties.”

You have done your best and have gone above and beyond, but now it’s time for her parents to do their part

Reddit user

Another added: “I am so sorry you’re going through this. I just got out of feeling like this and I definitely echo what other commenters recommended- take a step back so dad (and mum) can step up.”

A third commented: “I am in a very similar situation and I definitely recommend being a NACHO parent.

UK Childcare Laws: What do parents need to know?

“You have done your best and have gone above and beyond, but now it’s time for her parents to do their part.

“You didn’t get into this relationship to take on everyone else’s responsibility; you’re there for support.

“Please take care of yourself because if you don’t it’ll make things worse. You’ll wear yourself down to nothing and also develop resentment.

“If you can leave the house for an extended period of time. Take a vacation or go to a family or friends house and be at peace with just yourself.”

Keir Starmer breaks silence after calling hostages ‘SAUSAGES’ in awkward gaffe during conference speech

SIR Keir Starmer last night laughed off his conference sausage gaffe as he addressed it for the first time.

The PM was grilled about why he said “free the sausages” instead of Israeli “hostages” during his speech in Liverpool at the Labour conference.

Yesterday, the PM spoke during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly[/caption]

Asked if he had been hungry, Sir Keir said: I just mangled the beginning of the word. Have you never done that?”

He told journalists: “These things are there to give you an opportunity to rib me.”

In the sizzling gaffe, veggie Sir Keir had said: “I call again for restraint and de-escalation between Lebanon and Israel.

“I call again for all parties to pull back from the brink.

“I call again for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the return of the sausages… the hostages, and a recommitment to the two-state solution, a recognised Palestine and a safe and secure Israel.”

The blunder will add to a long line of slip-ups to plague politicians during conference speeches.

Former Welsh Tory leader Andrew Davies attempted to emulate Theresa May’s famous platitude of “Brexit means Brexit and we’re going to make a success of it” back in 2016.

But he winded up confusing Britain’s withdrawal from the EU with the most important meal of the day.

He told his party conference: “Mark my words. We will make breakfast, Brexit, a success.”

Footage of the gaffe quickly went viral on social media.

And Ed Miliband notoriously forgot to mention the deficit during one of his keynotes as Labour leader.

It comes as Sir Keir yesterday Yesterday, spoke during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

TRUMP MEETING

He also met former US President Donald Trump for a two-hour dinner while he’s in the US city.

It is the first time the pair have met, and they were joined by Foreign Secretary David Lammy for the coming together at Trump Tower.

The PM said it was “good” he had the opportunity to meet the Republican hopeful and it was “really to establish a relationship”.

Prior to the meeting, Trump had called Sir Keir “popular” during a press conference at his NYC skyscraper.

Asked on his thoughts of the Labour chief, he said: “Well, I’m going to see him in about an hour, so I have to be nice, right?

“But I actually think he’s very nice. I think he ran a great race. He did very well. It’s very early, but he’s popular, and I’ll be seeing him.”

Speech that sets the tone for Labour's first chapter

By Ryan Sabey, Deputy Political Editor

Sir Keir Starmer has endured a torrid few weeks in the job he has craved.

This was a reset moment that – for an hour or so at least – he could put the troubles of freebiegate and Sue Gray’s salary behind him.

It was a greatest hits run out that will please many of those who voted for him for the first time.

Stronger borders as a priority and fixing the foundations of the economy are essential for the long-term benefit of the country.

But there may be some anger among Labour ranks when he spoke of plugging the £22 billion black hole.

It won’t just fall on the shoulders of the better off in society as this is a “shared struggle”, he said.

He even said – to coin a phrase – that “we are all in it together”.

The decision to axe winter fuel allowance for millions of pensioners is just one decision he didn;t shy away from.

That brought about a few groans in the hall as ex-Tory Chancellor George Osborne echoed this phrase during the austerity years.

A crackdown on benefits and the welfare bill will be unveiled at the Budget and it won’t be pretty.

This speech was setting the tone for the first phase of this Labour government.

Short-term pain for long-term gain.

Folks, it’s time to buckle up

Referee ‘banned’ from officiating Liverpool games for an entire year to make return in Wolves clash on Saturday

A REFEREE who was effectively banned from officiating Liverpool games for an entire year will return for their match at Wolves on Saturday.

Arne Slot’s men have made a flying start to the season, winning four of their five matches and conceding just one goal.

Liverpool will be reunited with a familiar face against Wolves on Saturday[/caption]

Spirits are high following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

And Anfield fans are quietly hopeful of putting in a strong title challenge should Liverpool’s form continue.

The league’s second-place team visit basement boys Wolves this weekend.

Gary O’Neil’s men are yet to win a game and have taken just one point while shipping 24 goals.

However, Liverpool are set for an awkward reunion with a referee who hasn’t laid eyes on them in 12 months.

Darren England will take charge of Saturday’s clash at Molineux.

And it will see him officiate a Liverpool match for the first time since last October’s infamous VAR error in the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Tottenham.

Referee’s body PGMOL admitted there had been a “significant” human error after Luis Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside when he was clearly onside.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

England was on VAR duty and had been tasked with drawing up the lines.

But he accidentally gave a “check complete” to back up the original decision after forgetting what it was.

Darren England will be the fourth official after last season’s VAR blunder[/caption]

And by the time England realised his error, the game had already continued — meaning the match could not be brought back for Diaz’s goal to stand.

It took seven months from that game before England was given another VAR role, despite him being back on referee duties just weeks after the incident.

And he will now take part in a Liverpool match for the first time in a year after being named as the fourth official against Wolves.

Anthony Taylor will be the referee for the game.

While Michael Salisbury is in charge of VAR in a move which is sure to put Liverpool fans at ease.

After England’s mistake last year, ref chiefs issued a grovelling apology to the Reds.

A statement said: “PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur Liverpool.

“The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials.

“This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.

“PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.

“PGMOL will immediately be contacting Liverpool at the conclusion of the fixture to acknowledge the error.”
