I’m an esthetician – everyone thinks they need to moisturise more in winter, but that’s NOT the secret to great skin
IT’S inevitable: when the cold weather hits, our skin and lips get drier.
Cold winter air holds less moisture than warm air, which causes lower humidity levels that can draw moisture from the skin and leave it dehydrated and flaky.
This lack of humidity also weakens the skin barrier, causing dryness and tightness – as well as increasing your risk of irritation and cracking.
You might think that to counteract this, you should lather on the moisturiser.
But according to one licensed medical esthetician, that’s totally wrong.
Savanna Boda, who owns a skincare clinic and range of products, shares her tips on her podcast, The Blondest.
Last winter, she revealed the main issue she sees with skincare during colder months is people not exfoliating enough – AND moisturising too much.
“They think that their skin is dry, and doesn’t need to be exfoliated,” Savanna explained.
“But I’m here to tell you that every single day, our skin sheds one layer of dead skin cells.
“Exfoliation is going to help with that cellular turnover.
“If you have dry skin and you’re just putting on these thick, heavy moisturisers, and you’re asking, ‘why is my skin so dry?’
“It’s because it’s not able to penetrate effectively.
“There’s so many layers of dead skin cells sitting on your face.”
Savanna urged people to “sand it down” to create a thinner canvas on your face for lotions and potions to penetrate.
“A lot of people think they just need moisturisers and hydrating masks,” she continued.
“But you’re not treating the problem, you’re just putting a band-aid over it and will never actually feel moisturised and hydrated.
“There is a point to over exfoliating, and things like that.
“But it doesn’t matter what your skin type is, you need to exfoliate.”
Savanna urged people to research what exfoliants work for their skin type.
For example, normal skin will benefit from chemical exfoliants like enzyme peels and glycolic acid.
However, dry skin needs gentle exfoliation to avoid stripping away natural oils – which can be done with hydrating exfoliants like lactic acid or mandelic acid.
Oily and acne-prone skin will benefit from salicylic acid to target excess sebum production, unclog pores and combat acne-causing bacteria.
Among her other advice was to use a hydrating mist every day and still wear SPF, even when the weather is bad.

KAITLYN Bristowe has broken her silence on an awkward red carpet run-in with ex Jason Tartick.
The former couple found themselves both attending the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards on Thursday.
In a video shared by E! on their Instagram, Jason, 35, was spotted on the red carpet while Kaitlyn, 39, stood just a few feet away.
Talking about their encounter, the Bachelor Nation star told the outlet: “This isn’t the first time we’ve been in the same room, so it’s really not weird.
“Maybe six months ago, my heart would have been in my butt—but we’re chilling.”
She continued: “At this point in my life, I just want everybody to happy.
“I’m in a good place and I just am like, yeah. I waved. Like, it’s all good. I feel like other people care more than I do.”
Kaitlyn looked incredible on the red carpet in a dazzling sheer crop top and skirt that showcased her stunning figure.

A MAN has revealed trying to join the Mile High Club with his girlfriend ended up being the most “mortifying moment” of his life.
He explained that he and his other half “really wanted to try” getting intimate on an aeroplane mid-flight – an act referred to as the Mile High Club – so they decided to book a red eye, “thinking no-one would pay” any attention to them.
But, as another couple found out when they were hauled off an EasyJet flight for performing a sex act under some coats, things can sometimes go horribly wrong.
He explained that his girlfriend went into the toilet first, while he followed a few minutes later.
As they were already aroused, things kicked off quickly, but just as they were getting into the swing of it, a stewardess began “banging on the door, saying ‘Come out right now! I know what you are doing in there!’
“We look at each other in horror and I instantly lose my erection,” he admitted in the post on Reddit.
The pair then buttoned themselves up and “skulked out”, to “major stink eye from everyone sitting nearby”, as he admitted “several people were woken up by the stewardess yelling”.
After that, the couple had to sit through the rest of the flight in “extreme shame”, with the man admitting he was still sexually frustrated too.
The angry stewardess – who he said was a “middle-aged mum-type, not a cool young Redditting type – then pointed out the pair to the captain as they were getting off the flight.
“1/5 would not repeat,” he concluded.
“I turned red just reading that,” one person admitted in the comments section.
“I would have come out the bathroom and would have said ‘how dare you? She is afraid of flying and I’m here helping her and you are going to try to embarrass us?’ and walk away,” another wrote.
“I did something similar to this when me and my other half were having sex on a train,” someone else said.
“We used that line when people started banging on the door.
“My other half started fake gagging and crying and whoever was banging on the door left.
“So it worked pretty well.”
However, they added that they “wouldn’t recommend”, as there’s “barely any ventilation” and “railway toilets are absolutely disgusting”.
While someone else wrote: “As a matter of fact, having sex on a place is not illegal.
“Disregarding instructions from a flight attendant, such as being told to leave the bathroom while you are having sex is illegal.”
Is joining the mile high club actually illegal?
HAVING sex during a flight might sound exciting to some, but it comes with a risk of getting caught and landing yourself in legal trouble.
Many over the years have bragged about joining the so-called ‘Mile-High Club’ – but here’s what the law says.
There is no such law in Britain that forbids someone from having sex on a plane.
However, there are some offences you’re at risk of committing.
Under section 71 of the Sexual Offences Act 2004, it is illegal to have sex in a toilet which the public has access to.
Offenders risk a six-month prison sentence or a £1,000 fine.
Outraging public decency under common law could also be argued if it was proven that at least one person may have seen the act.
“You’ve just got to work up the courage and go for it,” another added.
“Go to the toilets at the back of the plane so no one is facing them and go at a time when there are not any queues.”
“The trick I found was moderately-sized daytime flights,” someone else wrote.
“Many people think they should do overnight flights but the crews are usually sizable and you’re likely to get caught.”

A HUSBAND strangled, stabbed and bludgeoned his wife to death before taking his own life in a horrific murder suicide, an inquest heard.
Richard Parks, 63, and wife Suratchanee ‘Lat’ Parks, 53, were discovered inside their home in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
An inquest heard how tree surgeon Parks had horror stab injuries to his neck and was found with a knife in his hand.
His nail bar worker wife was discovered in the bath with neck wounds consistent with being strangled, Kent Online reports.
Lat also had multiple knife injuries and had been bludgeoned with a hammer.
Pathologist Dr Virginia Fitzpatrick-Swallow told the court she had other injuries that suggested she had tried to fight her husband off.
The court was told the pair had met in Thailand where Lat already had a son and later moved to the UK.
They had recently bought a home in Lat’s native country and were hoping to retire there soon.
The couple’s marriage was described as “happy and without problems” but Parks had recently become anxious after receiving a large tax bill from HMRC.
He had also been “struggling with his mental health” and was forced to delay the move to Thailand, it was said.
On February 23, loved ones had gone to the three-storey home after growing concerned for the couple’s welfare.
Neighbours heard “hysterical” screams after they discovered Parks and Lat dead inside.

Police found blood stains in the kitchen, hallway, living room and on the stairs.
There was also a red folder on the floor that contained a large sum of cash, as well as a chainsaw and pruning saw in the bathroom.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Jessica Summers said police concluded there was no third party involvement.
Coroner Roger Hatch ruled that Lat was unlawfully killed and that her husband had taken his own life.
Parks’ brother Robert Parks said: “This is a terribly sad situation. Only those two will ever know exactly what happened.
“They loved each other very much and he was looking forward to going to Thailand – it’s just terribly sad for both families.”
