Enzo Maresca opens door for £200,000-a-week Chelsea outcast to return to fold and says ‘we all make mistakes’

ENZO MARESCA has opened the door for a Chelsea outcast to return after admitting: “We all make mistakes.”

The Italian oversaw a major clear-out this summer, with Conor Gallagher the highest-profile victim.

Maresca also chopped the likes of Raheem Sterling and Trevoh Chalobah into a ‘bomb squad’ as he made several exciting signings.

And one of them could now be set for a spectacular return to first-term proceedings.

Another big earner on £200,000-a-week was also one of the players axed from Chelsea’s senior squad.

But unlike Sterling and Co, left-back Ben Chilwell was unable to find a new club despite links with Manchester United.

And after making his first appearance of the campaign in Tuesday’s 5-0 Carabao Cup win against Barrow, he could soon be back in regular action.

Chilwell, 27, came off the bench at half-time to replace Malo Gusto.

And he took up a hybrid role on the flank which also saw him cut inside on several occasions.

Chelsea fans gave a loud cheer when Chilwell’s name was read out by the Stamford Bridge announcer.

But it remains unclear whether his long-term future remains in London after his initial snub.

However, Maresca eventually made the decision to reintegrate him into the seniors until the January window.

And the Italian appears to have been left impressed by Chilwell’s attitude.

The defender did not let the side down with his second-half showing against Barrow.

And Maresca has now hinted that he made a “mistake” axing the England ace, which could see him gain more minutes in futures matches.

Chelsea’s Italian gaffer said: “In the moment we need him, for sure, why not?

“I will say again in the moment he is with us, he is one of the Chelsea players and one of our players.

“If we need we will give him chances and minutes.

“We all make mistakes. I had to make a decision; sometimes they are good and sometimes not.

“There is not any bad intention from me. It was just to try and think of the best thing for the club.”

Chilwell has been at Chelsea since 2020 after a £45million move from Leicester.

He’s so far played 107 times for the Blues, with injuries taking their toll in several seasons.

But Chilwell has endeared himself to fans by helping Chelsea win the Champions League and Club World Cup.

Who is Joan Hannington aka The Godmother? Meet the jewel thief played by Sophie Turner in ITV crime drama

AFTER impulsively swallowing diamonds in a bid to steal them, Joan Hannington got a taste for the expensive gems.

The famous jewel thief’s story is now being told in new ITV drama Joan, starring Sophie Turner.

Born in Acton, west London, in 1957, Joan Hannington was the youngest of six children to Irish parents Richard and Josephine O’Leary.

She endured unhappy childhood which included poverty and abuse.

Joan once revealed in an interview how her father regularly tortured her and her siblings.

She said: “My sisters and I would be in the bath on a Saturday night and he would hold our heads down under the water until we nearly drowned.

“He used to beat me up on an almost weekly basis. I’d be stripped nude and beaten with a wet dishcloth or hit across the shins with a cricket bat – it was horrendous.”

Because of this, at just 13-years-old she ran away from home.

In 1974, when she was 17, she married her first husband Ray Pavey who was a convicted armed robber, and they had a daughter called Debbie.

However, her marriage didn’t last, and her child was taken into care.

Desperate to see her daughter she stole a car, a decision she regretted immediately as she was caught and remanded in HM Prison Holloway, before being given a two-year probation order.

Becoming ‘Britain’s most notorious jewel thief’

Hiding her criminal record, in 1979, Joan was employed at a London jewellers.

At the age of 24, it was there that she made a decision that would change her life forever.

On impulse, she decided to steal several diamonds by swallowing them.

“It seemed the simplest way to hide them,” she said. “Then, 12 hours later, once nature had taken its course, I sterilised the gems in a bowl of gin.”

Speaking about why she decided to steal the gems, Joan said in her 2002 memoir: “I just saw those diamonds, and I saw a flat and some money and getting Debbie back.

I would say in the morning, ‘Let’s go to New York!’ By lunchtime, we would be sitting in first-class seats, sipping champagne.

“And then, after a while, when it became obvious I wasn’t going to get her back, I just thought: ‘F**k it, I’m going to have a brilliant life then.”

Joan has since estimated that her first diamond haul was worth around £10K.

She has also admitted that at the height of her thieving she had more than £800K worth of gems buried in a biscuit tin in her garden.

It was because of this that she earned the nickname ‘The Godmother’ and is often referred to as ‘Britain’s most notorious jewel thief’.

Life of luxury

To avoid alerting any suspicion to her crimes she stay living in her Islington council home.

But this didn’t stop her from splashing the cash elsewhere.

The 80s saw her live a life of glamour and glitz, which saw her visit a hairdresser every day.

She drove fast cars, and her wardrobe was stuffed full of furs, designer clothes and, of course, diamonds.

Joan also enjoyed a jet set life, and once said: “I would say in the morning, ‘Let’s go to New York!’

“By lunchtime, we would be sitting in first-class seats, sipping champagne, with £20,000 cash lining our pockets.

Going straight

After her third husband died trying to burn a house down to claim insurance, Joan decided she’d had enough and was going straight.

At this point she had a three-year-old son, and said that she wanted to “do better” for him.

“The money never brought me any happiness,” Joan said in her memoir. “I just wanted to prove I could raise a good child in a straight world.”

Joan was never arrested for her any of the stolen jewellery.

Living a low-key life

After stepping away from her criminal past, Joan decided to keep her low-key life and raise her child.

Her life hit the spotlight in 2002, when she released her memoir, I Am What I Am.

It’s understood she now lives a quiet life on the south coast of England with her two dogs.

A loud fart could be heard when Wade was on camera[/caption]

The unbelievable moment left fans in hysterics and even prompted Wade to take to social media to clear things up.

In a stout defence of his actions, The Machine blamed the loud noise on his Velcro shoes.

He wrote: “I feel I must address a situation following my run to the semi-finals of PC22 today.

“Footage has emerged of me doing what appears to be a “shart” at the end of one of my matches.

“It was actually the Velcro on my new trainers. I now consider this matter put to bed as don’t wish to talk about it again.”

Wade, who is ranked 18 on the PDC Order of Merit and has banked £384,000 in prize money over the last two years, hasn’t quite put it to bed yet though.

And the 41-year-old has explained further what happened that day, hinting that it may not have been his shoes that made the noise.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, he explained: “I have to defend myself, and I am sticking to the story that it was the Velcro on my new trainers!

“In all seriousness, I thought the live streams for matches ended as soon as the final dart was thrown. I won’t be making that mistake again!

“On the plus side, I am glad it seemed to brighten everyone’s day and people enjoyed a bit of banter on social media afterwards.”

While he also dropped a big hint at what the real reason for the mysterious noise was when he signed off his column by writing: “Take care this week, folks. It’s windy out there…”.

Wade is now preparing for the Swiss Darts Trophy this weekend in Basel as he looks to use his efforts in last week’s Players Championships as the wind in his sail to hit some form in the back end of the season.
