Busy mum branded a ‘fat cow’ and ‘disgusting mess’ sheds staggering 10st – and shares her secret weight loss tips

A BUSY mum lost a staggering 10st after being cruelly branded as a “fat cow” and “disgusting mess” by strangers – leaving her too embarrassed to leave her own home.

Emma McGarry had struggled with her size since her teenage years and turned to food as a source of comfort.

The 37-year-old admits she was “completely addicted to food” and would gorge on takeaways or white bread – sometimes eating up to a loaf a day.

The mum, from Oldham, tipped the scales at 19st 10lbs at her heaviest and was a dress size 24.

But after changing her diet, she lost an amazing 10st 10lbs.

She is now a slinky size 10 and weighs 9lbs 2ozs.

Emma says: “I literally could not walk, I was on crutches, and I was too embarrassed to leave my own house.

“I ate loads of carbs and my biggest downfall was bread.

“I feel like a new woman now; I love swimming and walking. I love being a mum.”

Emma was slim and healthy in her teens until she suffered a knee injury whilst training with the RAF.

She could not complete her training and over the next few years, needed seven operations on her knee.

She was also stuck in an unhappy relationship.

Emma, who worked as an ambulance emergency call handler, says: “I turned to food for comfort.

“I was miserable in my relationship, and I was in and out of hospital with my knee.

“I just got bigger and bigger, and I lost my confidence.

“I’d eat if I was bored, if I was happy, if I was upset.

“Food was the answer to everything. I could polish off a loaf of white bread in one day.

“I loved pizzas, takeaways, anything stodgy.”

As she struggled to maintain a healthy relationship with food and piled on the pounds, Emma endured cruel abuse from strangers that left her feeling even more depressed.

“I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and I couldn’t even walk up the street,” the mum said.

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes widespread pain all over the body and muscle stiffness.

“If I went out, I’d get horrible abuse; ‘fat cow’ and ‘disgusting mess’.

“I had anxiety and depression and I felt ashamed of myself.”

‘TRANSFORMED MY LIFE’

By the start of 2016, by now relying completely on crutches, Emma realised she had to change.

She says: “I wanted to join Slimming World, but it took me six months to pluck up courage to actually join the group, I was so worried about being judged.

“Yet when I finally went in, I couldn’t have felt more at ease.

“The group leader, Tracey Mackey, was lovely. The group became like an extended family to me.”

In her first week, Emma lost half a stone.

Alongside her diet, she began hobbling around her garden for five minutes at a time.

Emma's diet before and after her weight loss

Emma’s diet before her weight loss was heaving on carbs and takeaway meals.

She loved white bread, pizza and stodgy meals.

As she turned to food for comfort during health and relationship struggles, she also had trouble controlling her portions.

The self described ‘food addict’ said she used to eat a whole loaf of white bread within a day.

According to the British Dietetic Association, a healthy portion size for bread is 34 to 36g – that’s about one medium slice.

Bread can be healthy source of fibre if you don’t have too much of it and stick to wholegrain, wholemeal, granary or seeded versions.

Emma’s diet after her weight loss

To help achieve her weight loss goals and shed a staggering 10st, Emma cut down on carbs and switched to eating healthy chicken wraps.

She also chooses omelettes and salad instead.

Emma said she indulges in diet coke too, which can be good swap for people trying to reduce their sugar intake.

But the NHS warns that having too much artificially sweetened foods and drinks aren’t necessarily healthy.

The mum makes sure to do a lot of her own cooking instead of ordering takeaways and drinks plenty of water too.

By December that year, she’d lost three stone.

At the start of this year, her weight loss 10lbs 10lbs. She now weighs 9st 2lbs and is a dress size 10.

She says: “It wasn’t all straight success.

“I had a bad relationship and I gained some weight, and the group was so supportive – they helped me get over it and get my weight loss back on track.

“We’re all friends for life.”

Tracey has swapped carbs for healthy chicken wraps, omelette and salad, and diet coke.

She is so thrilled with her transformation that she is now launching her own Slimming World Group in Oldham, Greater Manchester.

She says: “I really enjoy cooking again, I eat healthily and I drink lots of water.

“I’ve gone from hobbling round my back garden to doing charity walks, and I swim a lot too.

“I have literally transformed my life and now I hope to inspire others to do the same.”

How to lose weight safely

Losing weight should be a long-term commitment to healthier living, rather than any drastic measures.

The NHS tips – which can be adopted slowly – include:

  • Get active for 150 minutes a week – you can break this up into shorter sessions
  • Aim to get your 5 A Day – 80g of fresh, canned or frozen fruit or vegetables count as 1 portion
  • Aim to lose 1 to 2lbs, or 0.5 to 1kg, a week
  • Read food labels – products with more green colour coding than amber and red are often a healthier option
  • Swap sugary drinks for water – if you do not like the taste, add slices of lemon or lime for flavour
  • Cut down on food that’s high in sugar and fat – start by swapping sugary cereal for wholegrain alternatives
  • Share your weight loss plan with someone you trust – they can help motivate you when you have a bad day

Exact ‘weak’ detail on your rare nickel that makes it worth $109,250 – and the year that increases its price

OWNING a specific 1867 nickel might mean you have a valuable hidden gem in your collection.

One such coin sold for an astonishing price of $109,250 at auction, largely due to its unique characteristics, particularly its “weak” details that distinguish it from other coins.

The 1867 With Rays Shield Nickel recently sold for $109,250, showcasing its rarity and unique characteristics

Graded PR66 by PCGS and certified by CAC, it features original striking with notable details identified by researcher
Heritage Auctions

The 1867 5C Rays PR66 Cameo nickel is an incredibly rare piece of numismatic history.

Graded PR66 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and certified by the Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this nickel boasts original striking.

It also has distinctive features identified by researcher John Dannreuther, according to Heritage Auctions.

WHAT’S THE SITCH?

The coin’s obverse displays remarkable characteristics.

This refers to the left base of the “1” in the date positioned over the right edge of a dentil and the “7” being recut.

The lower shield is notably clear, free from roughness or die polishing, enhancing its appeal to collectors.

Additionally, the highest leaf below the letters “RU” in “TRUST” is fully detached from the shield, further adding to the coin’s uniqueness.

A defined area exists below the right arrow shaft.

Plus, tiny die polish lines are evident from the upper left of the shield to the nearest leaf.

ON THE FLIP SIDE

On the reverse, you can observe a slightly weak center ray below the second “T” of “STATES,” along with attenuated dentils, which are characteristic of Dannreuther’s Reverse A, State I.

The dating of the 1867 With Rays proofs reveals clandestine strikings that are significantly rarer than the 1866 With Rays proofs, perhaps by a factor of eight to one, per the auctioneering site.

While the Guide Book estimates about “25+” existing examples, that figure seems conservative, considering the probable restrikes.

This particular nickel showcases untoned, brilliantly reflective surfaces with just a hint of champagne patina at the centers.

Unlike the 1866 Rays coins, it lacks a center dot on either side, yet every leaf, shield stripe, and star is meticulously struck and boldly detailed.

What is a die break or error on a coin?

What causes such defects on coins and why are they so rare to find?

A die break, also known as a cud, is an error on a coin that is formed when a die, (a metallic piece that is used to strike a coin) is missing a piece near the rim.

When dies strike coins, they have a heavy impact and pressure and the metal from the blank part of the coin, known as the planchet, overlaps the area left by the missing piece of the die.

Coins with such deformities are rare thanks to the strict quality control measures at the US Mint.

When such errors do occur, they are often caught and destroyed.

However, those that slip through the net become huge collector’s items worth much more than their face value.

The frosty devices are so well-defined that they nearly deserve a Deep Cameo designation.

TIMELY VALUE

The year 1867 is significant for collectors, marking a transitional period in minting techniques.

Coins from this year are not just rare; they symbolize a moment in American numismatic history that collectors cherish.

The specific characteristics of the 1867 With Rays Shield Nickel make it highly sought after.

There are also plenty of other coins that have errors that have driven up their values.

A single detail on the back of a coin makes it worth $114,000.

And a rim mistake on a nickel makes it sell for up to $20,500.

He carried the ball 25 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns, averaging six yards per carry.

FOX Sports’ sideline reporter revealed: “He spends more than a quarter million dollars on what he calls body maintenance.

“No fried food, no dairy, no gluten, no artificial sugars. Doesn’t eat until four or five o’clock during the season, maybe has a banana or avocado before practice.”

The costs include a personal chef who prepares all of Henry’s meals.

His epic fitness regime also includes cold therapy, infrared sauna, hyperbaric oxygen, and massage therapy.

During the offseason, Henry works out twice a day at the SandersFit Performance Center in Dallas.

He works out seven days a week, meaning he has NO breaks.

His workout regime includes running hills, including up to 10 sprints on a 100-yard hill.

Henry does hammer curls with 80-pound dumbbells to work on his arms.

And he does Bulgarian split squats with 120-pound dumbbells to improve his legs.

In the offseason, his first meal is around 1 pm. During the season, he does not eat until 4 or 5 pm and then eats again around 8 pm.

When he does eat – the portions are enormous.

He also stays away from fried foods, gluten, dairy, or artificial sugars.

“I probably eat three chicken breasts, some rice, and broccoli,” he said.

“Then I have some gluten-free pancakes, scrambled eggs, diced potatoes, home fries, and some steak.”

Before practice, he eats kale, an avocado, or a banana for energy.

Three days a week, he also takes IV fluids which contain vitamin E, Coenzyme Q10, and other nutrients.

Henry can certainly afford these huge expenses to keep himself in the best of shape.

He recently signed a two-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens worth $16 million.

Strictly fans spot secret ‘feud’ between Shirley Ballas and fellow judge as they slam her annoying habit

STRICTLY fans are convinced they’ve spotted a secret feud between two judges after last night’s show.

Some have called head judge Shirley Ballas, 64, out for constantly interrupting fellow judge Craig Revel Horwood, 59.

BBC viewers branded the habit “annoying” and begged producers to step in.

One fan pointed out: “Shirley is getting irritating, some producer needs to tell her to stop interrupting Craig…the drama should be on the dancefloor not on the judges panel.”

A second echoed: “There’s banter and there’s shouting down. I know the difference even if you don’t.”

“The petty bickering is really annoying,” a third said.

Another fumed: “Can Shirley pls stop interrupting Craig (especially when he’s right) just let the man speak.”

While another begged: “CRAIG AND SHIRLEY CALM DOWN GUYS -HELP?”

During last night’s second live, Shirley was spotted cutting off Craig while he gave the contestants his feedback.

She quickly interjected when Craig told Welsh opera singer that there weren’t many “heel leads” during his routine.

Shirley fired back and said: “That is not true,” to which Craig told her: “You can’t deny it, you’re sugar coating it.”

But Shirley replied: ” I am denying it. That’s not true.”

The pair were taking swipes at each other throughout the show and again clashed over Jamie Borthwick’s dance.

Craig told the EastEnders star: “I felt it lacked connection, I felt it lacked an emotional connection between both of you.

“It felt like you were dancing by numbers. OK, you’re thinking about the dance and every move you are doing but actually didn’t lift from the space at all.

“I felt like you didn’t lift from the space at all. I felt like we lost story and everything about what a rumba is about.”

Craig’s feedback was met by a sea of boos from the audience.

Shirley was quick to jump in and said: “He needs to start somewhere with a good fundamental,” to which Craig replied: “I get that.”

She went on: “It had emotion, I like it when it is really calm.”

The other judges struggled to get a word in, with Motsi Mabuse screaming: “May I speak now?”

Elsewhere in the competition, Love Island‘s Tasha Ghouri added fuel to the ‘fix’ claims as she broke show record.

The reality star wowed the judges with her Viennese waltz on week two of the competition.

The former ITV2 personality has previously come under fire due to claims she had previous “professional training”.

Shirley and Motsi gave Tasha and her partner Aljaž Škorjanec a standing ovation after their routine.

Three of the judges – including Craig Revel Horwood – called her routine the “dance of the night and scored a total of 35.

Claudia Winkleman also revealed that it was the highest ever score of a Viennese waltz in week two in Strictly Come Dancing history.

Viewers couldn’t help but take to X – formerly known as Twitter – as they declared that she had already earned her spot in the final.

“Three 9’s in week 2???? tasha is a force to be reckoned with,” wrote one fan.

A second user posted: “Tasha’s cinched her way to the final. Like give her the 10’s right now.”
