Questions must be asked after Bruno Fernandes was sent off for Man Utd against Tottenham, says ex-Premier League referee

IN real time Bruno Fernandes’ first-half challenge on James Maddison looked a poor one.

And based on an immediate viewing, it seemed ref Chris Kavanagh’s decision to show a red card was the correct one.

But replays clearly showed he slipped and his foot did not make contact as high on Maddison’s leg as it first seemed.

In these circumstances a ref has to consider whether a challenge was reckless, which would be worthy of a caution, or if it has endangered a player’s safety with excessive force and brutality — a red-card offence.

Looking back at the footage, you would have to say it was reckless rather than a case of serious foul play.

There should be no criticism of Kavanagh as he only gets one view of it.

But the question to ask is why VAR Peter Bankes did not get involved, as he sees what we see.

If VAR had recommended a review I’m sure Kavanagh would have changed his mind.

Fernandes was furious that he was sent for an early bath, telling Sky Sports post-match: “Even James Maddison when he gets up he said it’s not a red card.

“If this is a red card we have to look at many other incidents.

“I don’t understand why VAR doesn’t call him [referee] to the screen.

“The red card makes it worse. I have to appreciate all the effort my team-mates have done to try and return to the game but it wasn’t possible. They showed great effort and character and I was happy for that.”

Ten Hag said: “I don’t think it’s a red card. We had big chances [before it] and it’s only 1-0 so we could make a comeback. It had a big impact on the game.”

Man Utd ratings vs Tottenham

MANCHESTER UNITED suffered a 3-0 thrashing against Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off in the first half for fouling James Maddison, forcing Erik Ten Hag’s side to play with 10 men against Ange Postecoglou’s team.

After back-to-back draws against Crystal Palace and FC Twente fans hoped United would redeem themselves against Spurs.

However, the match at Old Trafford quickly turned sour. Brennan Johnson scored early and things worsened when Fernandes was sent off allowing Spurs to extend their lead to 3-0.

And here is how SunSports Charlie Wyett rated the Manchester United stars.

Andre Onana – 5

Stood his ground to deliver a good save from Timo Werner who was clean through – no chance for either goal.

Noussair Mazraoui – 5

First in the refs’ book for chopping down Destiny Udogie. Could also have blocked Micky van de Ven for the goal. Just watched Solanke make it 3-0.

Matthijs de Ligt – 4

Shocking first half. Failed to cut out the cross from Micky van de Ven which led to the first goal.

Lisandro Martinez – 5

Switched off for the Spurs goal and was drawn to the ball and Johnson was left unmarked.

Diogo Dalot – 5

Gave the ball away in dangerous areas and struggled against Johnson.

Manuel Ugarte – 5

Suffered a stinker and was lucky to last until the 73rd minute.

Kobbie Mainoo – 5

Not one of his better performances and was taken off just before half-time following Fernandes’ sending-off.

Marcus Rashford – 5

Over-ran the ball for Tottenham’s first. Way off the pace.

Bruno Fernandes – 4

Arguably the worst captain in United’s history. Deserved red card for his challenge on James Maddison.

Alejandro Garnacho – 6

Had United’s only chance in the first half but hit the outside of the post. Improved in the second half.

Joshua Zirkzee – 5

Looked completely lost up front – threatening to be another poor Erik ten Hag signing. Replaced at half-time.

Subs:

Mount (for Mainoo 45)  5, Casemiro (for Zirkzee 46) 7, Hojlund (for Rashford 73) 5, Eriksen (for Ugarte 73) 5.

Strictly’s Neil Jones defends Toyah Willcox after furious Nadiya slammed elimination result

STRICTLY pro Neil Jones has fiercely defended Toyah Willcox after they were saved by the judges in a shock elimination.

80s icon Toyah and Neil found themselves in the bottom two and dancing off against Tom Dean and Nadiya Bychkova during Sunday night’s episode.

However, despite them being the lowest scores on the leaderboard, viewers and stars alike were shocked when the judges opted to send Tom and Nadiya home.

Sharing a photo from their dance routine, set in a Western saloon, Neil praised Toyah for her drive as fans slammed the show for “fixing” the result to save her.

“Ladies and Gentlemen when you ask me how my Saturday night went,” Neil joked, posting a picture of Toyah mounting the fake bar.

Addressing her performances so far, she said: “I just want to say it’s week 2 @toyahofficial is not a dancer but every day she’s improving, each day I tell Toyah, it might not be perfect but you are improving and at the same time you are not losing who you really are and that is what @bbcstrictly is all about.”

Speaking to Toyah directly, he added: “You bring so much joy in our lives and I feel lucky that I have the opportunity to teach and guide you so we can both entertain.”

Neil’s sweet message to Toyah comes after Nadiya Bychkova couldn’t hide her disappointment at leaving the show early.

In a post on Instagram after the announcement, she simply wrote: “I really appreciate all the messages but I’m not ready to talk about what happened tonight just yet.”

But fans spoke for her, calling the moment a ‘fix’ and arguing it was one of the most shock eliminations in the show’s history.

“Absolute fix. They obviously have some deal to give Neil more air time this year. Poor Tom. Not on at all,” wrote one fan.

“Tom has been robbed!! Toyah was by far the worse dancer!!! Absolute Fix” said a second.

A furious third wrote: “No…wrong wrong wrong…..getting fed up with this show now, think the judges must be being told who to save, Tom should have stayed over Torah 100%”

Following the public vote, the gold-medallist swimmer, 24, faced singer and actress Toyah, 66, in the dance-off tonight.

After both couples danced a second time, the judges delivered their verdicts, with Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse both choosing to save Toyah while Anton Du Beke opted to save Tom.

Head judge Shirley Ballas had the deciding vote and chose to save Toyah.

We found a mundane mug gathering dust in a loft for 20 years – now it’s sold for £13,500 due to unique detail

A MUNDANE ceramic mug left inside a loft for 20 years has been sold at an auction for a whopping £13,500 because of one unique detail.

The 87-year-old souvenir cup was designed by British artist Eric Ravilious for Wedgwood to mark the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937.

It is said to be a rare example because of its unique yellow and green detailing which had sat undisturbed in a box in the vendor’s loft since the late 1990s.

Adapted from a previous version intended to mark King Edward VIII taking the throne before his abdication, the design features celebratory fireworks and the royal coat of arms.

The mug was given an estimate of £800 when it went under the hammer at Gildings Auctioneers in Market Harborough, Leics earlier this week.

But it smashed its estimate and sold to a private buyer for £13,500 – more than 16 times its guide price.

Gildings director Will Gilding said: “We’re thrilled to achieve this astonishing result for this very special mug which although highly collectable, is still intrinsically just a mundane household item.

“We were unable to find any other examples of this particular colourway, which also has a slightly differently shaped rim to the other mugs in the sale, so this one may well be unique.

“As a result, we knew it had the potential to soar far beyond its guide price.

“But for the hammer to go down at £13,500 is truly remarkable and just goes to show the magic that can happen when two determined collectors identify a must-have treasure.”

The cup was from a collection of five of Ravilious’s 1937 Wedgwood coronation mugs – and was kept inside an attic for 20 years.

Three of the mugs in more commonly seen but still sought-after turquoise, blue and pink-based colourways sold for £270, £360 and £2,700 respectively.

Another blue version made for the planned coronation of Edward VIII fetched £480.

Born in 1903, Eric Ravilious was a highly regarded Sussex-based painter, designer, book illustrator and wood engraver.

He is best known for his modernist watercolour interpretations of English landscapes and World War II scenes, some of which are displayed in the Imperial War Museum in London.

In December 1939 Ravilious became an official World War Two war artist with the rank of Honorary Captain in the Royal Marines.

On September 2, 1942, he joined one of three aircraft dispatched on a search and rescue mission for a plane that had failed to return to RAF Kaldadarnes in Iceland.

The aircraft he boarded also failed to return, and he and the four-man crew were recorded as lost in action four days later, making him the first of three British war artists to die in active service during World War Two.

Will added: “This vanishingly rare example of a striking design by a renowned artist who suffered a tragic wartime death was sold in very good condition given its age and ceramic nature.

“Such is the power of its scarcity, and the demand for works by Ravilious, this high quality but relatively inexpensive souvenir has taken on a previously unimagined value several decades later.

“When I brought the gavel down, I think everyone in the room felt like we needed a cup of tea to calm us all down – not least the buyer – but in a slightly more affordable mug.”
